As part of CJAM FM's second annual Joe Strummer Day marathon, where we confront issues related to poverty in the Windsor/Detroit area and surround it with the music of Joe Strummer as a back drop, I contributed two programs this year. Both of them were very different and both of them were two hours each. Joe Strummer Day Part One: Rarities Show The first program aired at 1 AM - 3 AM on CJAM following this years Joe Strummer Day kick off program by programmer Vern [...]
Nothing if not a model of consistency, Buffalo Tom has been making the same decent-to-great music since 1992's Let Me Come Over. Actually the Massachusetts trio's third album, Let Me Come Over feels more like a debut, as it zeroed in brilliantly on the group's strengths, namely the earnest, imagery-laden, acoustic-gone-electric songwriting of guitarist Bill [...]

Joe Strummer was one of the greatest voices and attitudes in rock and roll's history. Punk, blues, ska, reggae, rock and soul, Joe loved and played it all—and better than just about everyone. Here's one pre- and one post-Clash track along with two Clash covers, courtesy of Josh Rouse and Babyshambles. (Fun fact: Mick Jones of the Clash produced two records for Babyshambles' lead singer Pete Doherty's previous band, the Libertines). Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - "Tony Adams" (from Rock Art and The X-Ray Style ) [...]
While it's true that most early Pub rock was just a bunch of British dudes ripping off The Band , at it's core it was a roots rock movement reacting to the wankering of Emmerson, Lake and Palmer and other over-the-top progressive rock acts of the early 70's. You can just imagine a working class kid in England seeing this on the telly . More of a circuit of pubs and music halls than an exact musical genre, Pub rock created an outlet for stripped down roots rock that would eventually pave the way for punk rock in [...]
I'm back. After falling to pneumonia for a while, my computer became infected with its own spyware shitstorm and had to go into the shop for a while. Plus, my hard drive was maxed out. So, I had both problems solved over the last week and, hopefully, I'll be posting more regularly again. On Friday night, I caught the late showing of the rock doc Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten at the Green Mountain Film Festival . Here are a few thoughts on the night: ☺ The theater [...]

I saw the Joe Strummer biopic "The Future is Unwritten" at IFC last night. There was some nice live Clash footage and I didn't know much about the details of Strummer's life beforehand so I think it was pretty informative. There were a couple things about the movie that seemed weird. Does anyone care what Bono thinks about the Clash? Could Johnny Depp not be bothered to take off the pirate getup for his interview? My biggest complaint of the movie was that there wasn't that much music by the Clash. Maybe they had trouble getting the rights [...]

You may not even have noticed, since I did post the other day, but I've been having some ftp problems. But with the help of the DreamHost support team, I was able to get all issues resolved and get going again. Every time I've had a problem or needed help, they've taken care of me. A lot of times I even hear back from the support people within an hour of the time I've submitted my question. If you're looking for a host, these guys really are great. Moving on. [...]
The 101ers (live), "Lonely Mother's Son"...ring a bell? In the recent Last Man Standing: Suitcase Songs thread, I made mention of Joe Strummer having salvaged a song by his old band, The 101ers , for use in The Clash's "Jail Guitar Doors". Then, after 2000 Man called me on it, I started to doubt myself. Surely I've been wrong at least once before...but not this time. Here's "Lonely Mother's Son" , which features the entire [...]

Today in Music History: In 1969, Elvis Presley kicked off a four week run at the Las Vegas International Hotel, (his first live show since 1961). He reportedly netted $1.5m for the shows. On the menu an Elvis special, polk salad with corn muffins & Honey. Does anybody read books anymore? I don't read as much as I used to mainly because of time constraints and my old fart eyesight. I've worn glasses all my life and they're thick as coke bottles and now [...]
