18 Carat Affair is a one-man nostalgia machine, so it's a bit surprising that it's taken this long for him to release something called 90210 . The short 11-track project, unlike the Aaron Spelling television juggernaut, has no musical equivalent of a 'Very Special Episode', but it does feature a song called "Vandross Simulator". At this point we're pretty familiar with the funky, fuzzy work of 18 Carat Affair , but not so much with the artist he recently remixed, M.A. Beat. The French producer making his own form of synth-heavy funk gets (as far as we can tell) the first 18 Carat Affair remix for his Arbor Remixes EP. 18 Carat Affair has released a steady stream of "woozy funk" in 2011 and I've enjoyed it all. The newest album is Televised Tragedies , and the title makes me think of Budd Dwyer's 1987 suicide in front of TV cameras. Fortunately, the music doesn't bring to mind such morbid visuals. I like it when musicians make short songs. Most of the time, it means that they’ve cut out a lot of the unnecessary elements that we hear so often in longer tunes.
