The lead off track to the 1977 Stiff Records compilation A Bunch of Stiff Records , Nick Lowe's " I Love My Label" is getting a lot of attention more than 30 years later because Wilco has chosen to cover the song as the B side to their new single "I Might". Among the lines in the song: They always ask for lots of songs/Of no more than 2:50 long/So I wrote 'em some They never talk behind my back/And they're always playing my new [...]

from the archives Bob James - El Verano Summer is back... and that phased guitar riff reminding you it's been here all along. original air date: June 5th, 2010

Rounding out a very non-comprehensive week of Krautrock, we're taking it back to the mighty Can. This jam is another favorite of mine, and uncharacteristically short. Clock-precise and sunset-beach-party-decadent at once. Can - Moonshake And here's one that's pretty much a "Moonshake" re-do, from one their less-than-perfect later albums. Clearly, their future days were no [...]

By 1977 Michael Bloomfield was well past his glory days as a stellar sessioneer on Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited and as one half of the Butterfield Blues Band’s fearsome two-pronged guitar attack with Elvin Bishop. Disillusioned by the guitar-star pressure resulting from the Fillmore supersessions with Al Kooper and his brief tenure as figurehead of the crazily over-hyped Electric Flag, and succumbing to increasing depression and substance abuse, he’d drawn in his horns and largely retired to his San Fran home, emerging occasionally to record low-key albums with friends including John Hammond Jr, Barry Goldberg [...]

From cold hinterlands to deep space nebulae. I trust there are forms of life out there whose native language sounds a lot like Manuel G ö ttsching's guitar. Fun fact — G ö ttsching is prominently exhibited as a wax model in the Tokyo Tower Wax Museum, which is the largest wax museum in Asia. Now you know. Ashra - Don't Trust The Kids Ashra - Blackouts

More love for Bill Nelson, going back to his "I'm not Bowie, and I'm only sort of a guitar hero" days in Be Bop Deluxe. I try not to devote too many posts to one artist, but this musical crush keeps holding strong. Be Bop Deluxe - Orphans of Babylon

Though best known for the sultry slow burner "Me and Mrs Jones" (#1 in 1972), Billy Paul could funk it up too. In 1976, he covered the recent Wings hit, "Let'Em In", replacing some of Paul McCartney's guests (Phil and Don Everly, Keith "Uncle Ernie" Moon, "Brother John" Lennon and some real life relatives) with civil rights activists and African American heroes (Louis Armstrong). The song also includes inspirational passages from Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and Malcolm X's "The Ballot or The Bullet" speech [...]

Elvin Jones: Moon Dance Recently, Emmett , my brother , and I took in a show by saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa , which was great, and after surviving near fisticuffs before, and nearer desperate housewives after, we can now all sit down and enjoy this; some Elvin Jones with Bunky Green which I got from this post by Rudresh himself, over at destination out . Turn the lights down and enjoy, for this is Yuri Gagarin country. This goes out to William Shakespeare.

One of my most popular obscure records, as well as another musical evidence that 1977 was the greatest year for disco in any country, Italy included. Was about to throw this in the garbage bin when I got it, until I've listened to the killer flipside, oriental mind-blowing mesmerizing erotic madness. Perfect material to let [...] Related posts Gus Kamaras Shitan - Disco Shitan Randi - Ritmo

No hay mucho que hablar en esta nota, simplemente se nos ocurrió poner este video porque nos dimos cuenta que tenemos 1977 followers en twitter. Ojalá no dure mucho esa cifra y siga creciendo. ¡Gracias!

Originally shown on VH1 a few years back, here's a decent documentary on a pivotal year in New York City history on many levels. From the filmmakers website: The two hour special looks at a time when New York City had fallen into decay and chaos. There were not enough jobs, not enough money, not enough police, not enough schools, and not enough social services. There was a city-wide blackout with major looting, a serial killer was on the loose, and the Bronx was burning. Yet out of the chaos emerged one [...]
