2:54 - You’re Early

Toronto, Canada's version of South by Southwest, North by Northeast returns June 11-17th, bringing live music, film screenings, and interactive panels to venues across the city. In regards to the music portion, some 650 bands will perform across 50 stages. The Flaming Lips, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, and Bad Religion headline this year's lineup and they'll be joined by of Montreal, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Men, Purity Ring, Porcelain Raft, Matthew Good, Ceremony, Friends, and Bleached. My new favorite obsession of the year. They're 2:54 and I think I'm going to go and see them in Leeds tonight. What is it about them that enthralls me so? A week in and I been officially creaming and shaking and screamin meself every time I play the 2:54 's debut album. Reminiscent of the SHIRLEY's vox on the GARBAGE debut album, check their latest number, YOU'RE EARLY , and come back in me face next week when I'll have interview footage from the Brighton she-sibbling-duo.

Promo copy of the 2:54 's self-titled debut album has arrived and one listen in I can tell that this Brighton based she-sibbling duo's muzak will be heavily rotated throughout the '012. Added to iPod and set to soundtrack me journey into Soho town this Sunday. If the SHIRLEY MANSON's debut vox are still your thang, a decade and half laters, then swing via here as you shall appreciate the 2:54 imho.

I featured this 2:54 song recently in Friday Films , but it bears repeating: partly for its sublime stalkery-goth-trance feel, and partly because it makes me feel similarly to the below great poem by Rod McKuen , about a captured early-hours moment in a fragile relationship. 2:54 are two British sisters who count The xx and Wild Beasts amongst their fans, and whilst the three bands by no means sound the same, they all evoke a certain sense of longing with their dreamy melodies and often direct, personal lyrics. In "You're Early" the gentle vocals are set against jagged guitars and pounding drums as the sister's plead "I just want to be close". Pins apparently have been raved about over the past couple of weeks, unfortunately I was not invited into any of those discussions. What I do know is that by years end, this Mancunian collective of four will no doubt be a part of many new favorites lists. Their first single 'Eleventh Hour' is a heavy dark lo-fi piece that gets better after every listen, the upside on these ladies looks promising.

Today's recommendation is inadvertently poignant. The band have no idea that it's poignant, but it is. And on the single's B-side, the UK art-rock wailers Wild Beasts rework the track, replacing the bassline with a foggy synthetic bed and giving Wild Beasts frontman Hayden Thorpe room to croon in the cracks. Taking the mood from their previous video, Scarlet and dosing it in a thick layer of fog and theatrics, director Jeppe Kolstrup has created a swirling mess that is a perfect backing to the song's tumbling urgency. May 28th will see the band release their full length debut on Fat Possum Records.
