Sofia Stolpe NXNE -spotting happens on two levels: there's the micro, where you pore over the year's lineup and try to figure out how you'll spend the four hopefully-warm nights in June club-hopping and seeing bands new and familiar; and there's the macro, where you see how this year's festival as a whole experience measures up against past years and assess how the event is trending as Toronto's flagbearer in a world where cities are increasingly judged by the quality of their music festivals. Or at least, that's how I look at things. I [...]
2:54 From: London, United Kingdom 2:54 Melancholia never sounded so erotic. Go Try The March by 2:54 Band [...]
By Paul Faller March 4, 2012 Those wanting to ignore anything to do the jubilee weekend would have done well to attend this year's Dot To Dot festival, which boasted a pretty tasty lineup. Were I capable of being in multiple places at once I could happily have chosen to watch at least twice as many bands, but here's a rundown of what I did manage to see. Opening the Manchester leg's biggest stage at quarter to three in the afternoon is a pretty tough task, so This Many Boyfriends [...]
The maladjusted, much-maligned Friday Films page returns with some more videos fr0m London acts we heart: Breton - Jostle (Live) This yellowy, captivating live video accompanies the release of Breton's latest double-A single (out on FatCat on 2 July) and was recorded by and for the wondrous French site La Blogotheque in Paris. Jostle (which can be heard properly here ) is from current album Other People's Problems , while Foam is just a lovely bonus track (and is listenable [...]
2:54 has already started to buzz before their album even dropped touring with Warpaint and the xx, the later of which is currently the only band who can match the phenomenal harmonies of 2:54's sister duo Collette and Hannah Thurlow. This 10 track self-titled album on Fat Possum Records is brining back the early 90s vibe with punk and metal influences to form goth-pop that intimately cloaks your mind, and lurks about in the corners bringing you back for listen after listen. The [...]
Photo credit: Maria Daun Whether or not the calendar officially says so, summer has arrived (at least I thought so until I walked out the door this morning). With the sweaty subway trips and blasting air conditioners comes the opening night of Celebrate Brooklyn's annual concert series hosted at the Prospect Park Bandshell. This Tuesday, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff will grace the stage, but the amazing shows don't end there as Wilco , The Head & The Heart , Hot Chip , [...]
If you like your rock bands dark and shadowy, then 2:54 are two gals you’ll want to get to know. Listen to the band’s single “Creeping,” and you might be able to guess that sisters Hannah and Colette Thurlow hail from the UK, a place where the gray, industrial sounds of the early 1980s once reigned supreme. Maybe they will once more, if all of 2:54’s stuff is as good as “Creeping.” A little shoegaze, a little garage rock, the duo expertly blend influence from The xx and Queens of the Stone Age, bringing the doom but making it undeniably [...]
2:54 are sisters Colette and Hannah Thurlow, whose self-titled debut has arrived with a certain expectation around it. A raw demo of a chillingly compelling song called “Creeping” on their MySpace page less than two years ago spawned media lyricism faster than the sisters could post a moody shot of themselves in matching biker jackets. So it's fitting that this same track closes the album, fully honed now under producer Rob Ellis’ guidance but still retaining the beauty and malevolence that pervaded the original. The song builds and swells impressively through crashing distorted chords, its sudden ending leaving you wanting more. [...]
English mood rockers 2:54 release their latest clip for the atmospheric single "Creeping" which can be heard on their now available self titled debut project. Follow the sisters into the abyss that includes eerie fog, a forest, a swamp and possibly the after-life. Which is not surprising coming from the Thurlow sisters. Video was directed by Frode & Marcus.
Anton Coene Remember, not so long ago, when big-ass bands with memberships numbering in the double-digits were all the fuss? Me neither. Seems two is all you need to make a racket and an impression, as yesterday's post can attest and today's can reinforce. What sets Brighton two-piece Blood Red Shoes apart from most of the other outfits who can tour in a Cooper Mini are the fact that though they're plenty good at the loud, they're much less reliant on the white noise bombast to get their message across. [...]

Sigur Rós - Valtari The Icelandic band's sixth studio album is a slow-moving, atmospheric, brooding piece of work that bares little resemblance to Jonsi's recent bright solo work, but will certainly please long time Sigur Rós fans. This is another magisterial outing from an incredibly talented and creative outfit.
Yes, we're keeping tabs on London's 2:54 , whose self-titled debut Fat Possum release drops today. To mark the occasion, the band has released a new video for Creeping . And, yes, June finds the sisters Thurlow returning to North America for a quick jaunt that includes a stop a NXNE 2102. 2:54 on [...]
