Today marks the release of Trump Harm , the seventh album from 31Knots. The Portland band consistently churns out incredibly artistic punk rock that continues to defy classification. The new album was recorded during frontman Joe Haege's time off from touring with fellow Portland band Menomena, as he became a member early last year and while writing his first solo album, the beat-heavy and synth-driven Chroma Key , under the moniker Vin Blanc, which was also released today in conjunction with Trump Harm on Polyvinyl Records. "Onanist's Vacation" opens the album with tumbling drums [...]

It has been been over two years, and we are honored (and, as always, glued to the page) to be able to publish another amazing, giant tour diary entry from Menomena's Danny Seim. You can read Menomena's past tour diaries (in chronological order, nonetheless) here . -Ed. It's a nice day to be alive, which makes it a bad day to start a new journal. Positivity rarely serves as good fodder for anything, especially in this band. But here goes. I'm in a van that just pulled out of something called an [...]

I wouldn't have chosen "Dreamsucker" for Grooms ' new video -- there are so many great ones to choose from on Rejoicer -- but this will suffice for now I suppose. In any event their love of guitar arpeggios really shines here, as does their affection for Sonic Youth and 31 Knots . Death By Audio's latest coup of a signing has put out a helluva video treat here too, full of [...]

There are certain things a musician can do to get my attention. One of the best ways is to toil in the underground for years with little fanfare or outside notice, then release a record at the height of your powers and send it to me. Another method is to create a SHIT-LOAD of amazing art (Stephen Spera did this, for example, and I showered him with grateful critic spunk ) along with your music, then hit me up when the two truly intersect. [...]

Today is a sunny day. Today is my birthday. And today it is time to publish the 50th MP3-Mix of the Last Pop Song. The first and the last fact undoubtely are reasons enough to pimp up the mix a little bit. Have som fun today, make someone happy and always remember: Carpe diem! Mount Wilson Repeater - Pencils/Pens MP3 Echosuite - Disarmed MP3 Black Gold - Detroit MP3 The Horrors - Sea within a Sea [...]
The great Dave Allen of Gang of Four, Danny Seim (Menomena) and John Askew (Tracker) have a new project: Faux Hoax, crazily pronounced "Folks". The Portland trio are creating a canvas of lyrics and music onto which all sorts of collaborators will make their stamp as well, birthing an experimental-style approach that challenges the conventional idea of a band. A rotating cast of members will basically perform or accompany songs written by the core trio. Who could resist a lil listen to the song "Hippies Will Rule", of their first (and maybe only?) release on Polyvinyl [...]

So, the big moment has arrived. During the next week (or two weeks, depending on the time i have to present yo this list), i'll tell you what my 50 favourite records were from 2008. I must admit I haven't listened to every album that got released this year, but maybe i'll make a few corrections at the end of the year. Maybe not. Comment as much as you want, cause i really enjoy that. Oh, by the way. You don't have to read everything. Just check out the mp3-links, look for them on myspace or the illegal [...]

I've never paid much attention to record labels or kept track of what bands were on what rosters. But lately I keep noticing parallels between bands and then discovering they are on the same label, so I've become much more interested in that stuff now. Two records in my heavy rotation took me a very long time to get my head around, because they are both quite a departure from each bands' previous album in terms of structure. Both records have been mostly dissed by the majority of reviews they have received, and all of these negative reviews seem to [...]
31Knots newest album, Worried Well , came out in August via Polyvinyl. It's an awesome record, but I'm going to let the press release do the talking: In an era where underground rock morphed into indie rock and indie Rock has become the new platform for rock stars and flash-in-the-pan buzz bands, 31Knots is neither. This is, depending on your vantage point, a blessing or a curse. Have they been marginalized by writing songs too intense and impossible to pigeon-hole? Or are they a cult band that becomes more meaningful with each passing trend in which [...]
Polyvinyl generally does right by me so the fact that Worried Well (the sixth full-length from Portland, Oregon's 31 Knots ) is good doesn't surprise me. In fact, Worried Well is something that seems to fit right in with the slightly-challenging yet melodic indie rock that's all the rage these days. It makes me wonder what 31 Knots has been doing all these years. From the ominously stomping pianos to the gnashing distorted guitars, this is sloughy indie rock at its finest; intense and quite enjoyable. The music is folded [...]

As the heat and sunshine of summer is finally gives way to cooler mornings, cloudy skies and that stiff breeze blowing in from the Pacific, we here at The Ripple thought that now would be a good time to update our smorgasbord of a seasonal listening guide. For those of you who recall, during the dog days of July we published a listening guide to those joyous, backyard Bar-B-Q slices of sunshine pop, like Dave Dill , music designed to lend a light vibe to your summer fun. Now, with [...]

First off, a roll call of sorts. Ladies : "Yes!" Are you ready? : "Yes!" Alright so who can tell me the universal rule of thumb? : "Kill or be killed" Correct! And now an admission: I kind of hated this song when I first heard it. And most of 31 Knots' new record, the just-released Worried Well . I can't really put a finger on it, but something just wasn't sitting well; the bouncy, strutting bar-room piano line; [...]
