It's true. I've always liked loved punk music but these days I'm just as likely to be listening to something that could very well be considered a form of country or folk music as anything else. One band that combines the two is Milwaukee's .357 String Band. I loved their previous album, Fire & Hail and this new one is no exception. The band's sound has been described by many as "streetgrass;" a sound I'd define as balls-to-the-wall speedy punk bluegrass. Their newest album, Lightning From The [...]

I became a .357 String Band fan two songs into seeing them on the stage at Deep Blues Festival 2. At the time I'd never heard of them, but I made a note that it was time to remedy such things. Since that festival I've caught them live here in Tampa a handful of times, even bringing them to town as an official ninebullets show the last time they were around. That said, I've never once written about one of their cds. That really wasn't by accident. See, as much as I've loved [...]

Here's the second half of my list so if you missed the first part, it's right here . What you've got here are my favorite albums of 2008. Honestly, I was actually surprised how the list ended up but I don't care how much street cred I lose for these picks, they are the records that I just couldn't stop playing. 25. Okkervil River - The Stand Ins ( Jagjaguwar ) I'm pretty much convinced that any record that Will Sheff puts out (until [...]
My transition from being a kid who grew up listening to punk rock to a jaded old man who now also loves roots music and more traditional American folk music didn't happen until I really heard that country-influenced music played with the same grit and intensity that I loved about punk. It just seems natural. One such band traveling down such a road is Milwaukee, Wisconsin's .357 String Band . Their sophomore album, Fire & Hail is full of high-octane punk bluegrass that sounds something like Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys covering [...]

Imagine spending the better part of a year planning. Shelling out tons of money over said year. All to bring the best of the punkass-blues scene together for a weekend somewhere in Wisconsin. Only to have record rains show up; on your weekend . Attendance falls well below what you expected and you lose a lot of your own money. What do you do? Chris Johnson will tell you- you make that muthafucker even bigger the next year...and that's just what he's done...2 days become 3 and the Deep Blues Festival of 2007 blossoms into the [...]
