While Halves' recorded output is atmospherically rich and grandiose in its instrumentation, live, the experience is more easily relatable. Which may have influenced the decision of the band to release a live album recorded in December at Dublin's Unitarian Church. 'Haunt Me When I'm Drowsy' is injected by the natural aura of the church setting on the live recording and is further bolstered by the addition by Jennifer Evans on vocals and members of 3Epkano on strings. Moreish and minimal. Here's a live video from the gig of 'Darling, You'll Meet Your Maker' by [...]
3epkano are a seven piece Dublin-based ensemble who specialise in composing and performing live soundtracks for silent films. This is their second album of original music, after 2007's At Land , and a six track eponymous EP debut in 2006. Though often tagged (or pigeon-holed) as 'instrumental post rock', there is much to admire in their genre-hopping approach (and I mean on discrete tracks, rather than from track to track), as they incorporate elements of classical, jazz, and more familiar rock tropes and textures. The mix doesn't always quite take, though. 'Rim Shak' is a good [...]

A list of events taking place over the next seven days in Dublin. This week I'm most looking forward to the Richter party, seeing Neon Indian live for the first time, the U:Mack party featuring Battles et al and the Bring the Toys event in Twisted Pepper on Saturday (I'm DJing upstairs at the Comic Cast event FYI). Tuesday 8th December - Richter Collective Xmas Bash @ Twisted Pepper (€15) - Lily Allen @ The O2 (€39.20) [...]
Sean Needham has produced another quality video for the second single off his second album 'Time is a Friend'. Have a look ...... it's pretty cool! Copied from YouTube: "Take one bike with a box on the front (Christiania bike), tape a video camera inside the box and get a silly Irish man to cycle the streets of Copenhagen. This video is the result. It cost nothing ... " Another video worth checking out is the brilliant video for Miss [...]

If you're going to the Electric Picnic have a great time. I'll be trying to catch as much of the festival as I can on the radio. International artists I'd have loved to see are Madness and The Flaming Lips. I also think I'd have lingered around the Salty Dog Saloon Stage witch has a great line-up: Bands on deck until 4am Friday 4th September 6.30pm Will Softly (Dusk DJ slot) 8.00pm Ray and Ian's Sea Shanties 9.15pm Bionic Rats 10.30pm The Cujo Family 11.45pm The Sick and Indigent Song Club featuring The Pirate Pussies 1.00pm [...]

On Friday I had the pleasure to be in the company of many fine musicians at The Purple Sessions in Drogheda. Herm were massively impressive, Pearse McGloughlin brought his amazing debut album to life with a nice little set but the big winner on the night was Nick Carswell sans his 'Elective Orchestra'. Here's the press info: Nick Carswell & The Elective Orchestra Bio Based around the songs of Nick Carswell, the Limerick-based Elective Orchestra have been busy making music since the end of 2007. Renowned for their warm emotive sounds and delicate arrangements, they have [...]
It was a vampire weekend of a different sort down at the Irish Film Institute. All things fanged and blood-sucking are being celebrated in Dublin at the moment under the banner of the One City, One Book festival. The book in question is, of course, Bram Stoker's evergreen epic of literature's great enduring gothic icon – Count Dracula. The first ever filmed depiction of the ubiquitous Count is Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror , which was released in 1922. F.W. Murnau's seminal saga tells of Count Orlok (the rights to Stoker's novel couldn't be [...]

However.... to give your weekend a warm glow, let me give to you some tracks from the excellent The Jimmy Cake which can be found on their website: http://thejimmycake.org 2008 [...]
