Mike Dean Kanye West might not have the best eye for fashion and we know his choice in artists is up for debate, but he's unimpeachable when it comes to cherry-picking talent to help him behind the boards. See his work with The Rza, No I.D., Jon Brion and maybe his best collaborator, Mike Dean. In many ways, Dean (along with fellow Rap-A-Lot in-studio wizard, [...]

I stumbled upon these during my daily work slacking, and figured I should share. I found them on his MixCloud account. However, I stole em off the stream for download. However, they are in .m4a format... But that's better than nothing, right? Ogg Vorbis & FLAC over everything. Shouts to Variable Bit Rates, though, keep doing ya thang. Prince Paul - Green Eggs and Swine ft. 3rd Bass (Unreleased Original Mix) This is circa 1990... Shouts to MC Serch. All other blogs got the gas face. [...]

Yo fellow WIB followers welcome back to another edition of 'DROP ON A CLASSIC'. So this time its the usual drill 3rd Bass = great group = great music = great samples to be showcased and an interesting history behind the group and its members. So sit back and relax with your favorite beverage and read on to increase your knowledge. 3rd Bass are an American Hip Hop group from the late 80's and early 90's consisting of 3 memebers. MC Serch (Michael Berrin), Prime Minister Pete Nice (Peter J. Nash), and DJ Richie Rich (Richard Lawson) were [...]

My mini-vacation extended into yesterday, and so we're freaking the Old School Tuesday funk, as we occasionally do. During my break I came across a fun/jarring bit of Twitrivia (Twitter Trivia, I'm trademarking that pronto): 3rd Bass' sophomore album, Derelicts of Dialect , is now 20 years old. A quick check on the ol' Googletron confirms that Derelicts of Dialect was released June 18th, 1991, which is a long-ass time ago. As it happens, I was in High School in 1991, so you can guess how old this discovery [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Detroit's ELzhi continues with his "Elmatic" project where he raps over various Illmatic instrumentals. This video is pretty slick, as a live band plays the instrumental of Nas' Halftime. Sidenote: I read an interview along time ago with Nas about Halftime. He said he was inspired by a quote in a James Joyce story, called A Little Cloud from Dubliners . The quote goes something like this: Little [...]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =FVTzmnrGakU No need to bloviate about how hip-hop has changed since this interview-it's readily apparent. But 3rd Bass on Arsenio is a nice accompaniment to Sports Illustrated's incredibly well-reported and engrossing feature on Pete Nice's baseball memorabilia obsession, and his ongoing descent. The moral of the story is that you can never trust a young man with a cane, unless his name is Big Daddy or he's in Kappa Alpha Psi. [Via 33 Jones ] Download: MP3: 3rd Bass-"The Gas Face"

I'll be honest, I have no idea where the inspiration for this week's OSM comes from. Well that isn't entirely true: somehow last week I came across the Easy Mo Bee interview below, but I don't exactly know how or why I came across it. It matters little though, as I've always enjoyed Mo Bee's work, and this is gave me a chance to dig into some of his earlier work. As you might've guessed by the title, I'm expecting to do a second Mo Bee OSM at some point, so go ahead and bate that breath [...]

3rd Bass: Brooklyn-Queens Can you believe that it's been twenty years since The Cactus Album ? Where's the remastered anniversary edition? I was listening to this CD recently - these guys really didn't like MC Hammer. So here, from my dusty music collection to your ears, is some late 80s hip hop. Running man, anyone? Enjoy. Aside: Prime Minister (Sinister) Pete Nice now co-owns a bar in Boston with a member of the Dropkick Murphys. It looks terrible.

On September 9th, Boston's Mr. Lif will release the first single and title track for his latest album I Heard it Today (Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises, Jan. 20th, 2009). Lif, one of the most powerful and insightful political rappers of his generation, has a unique plan for this album. He will write and release 1-2 songs every three weeks until Election Day (November 4), following which he'll release one more single based on his post electoral thoughts. Bloodbot is Lif's new label, and production on the various tracks will come from Edan, J Zone, Illmind, and others. [...]
I'm not sure that I could possibly post 5 catchier songs from the 90's in a single post without my head exploding. I mean, I've had "The Sign" stuck in my head for days now... MP3 | Counting Crows - Mr. Jones MP3 | Ace Of Bass - The Sign MP3 | Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains [...]

It's been a minute since I've taken the time to upload some songs to my Muxtape , probably because the site had some internal issues and I lost the last one I uploaded. Ah well. I got new songs posted. The theme? Remixes. Hip-hop remixes, to be exact. Just some of my favorites in my library. Man, I love 3rd Bass. More on them soon. Check the Muxtape . 3rd Bass | The Gas Face (remixed by Prince Paul)

Somehow during a coversation with Ack this week I used the phrase "suave bola", which I've always loved even though I have no idea what it actually means. Awesome translation do-hickey Babel Fish tells me the direct translation to english is "smooth ball", which seems a little less cooler than I would've imagined. Although I guess if it means someone is a "smooth baller", then I guess that's cool. If the kids still say "baller", I have no idea. That's a lot of quotes right there, Eddy Rodgers would approve. Anyway, I knew that [...]
