So I caught a great show live at Tremont Music Hall in Charlotte, NC on Friday night. I have to give thanks to my buddy Tim Curry of Sapphire Rebellion for the heads up. Four bands were scheduled for the night. I was excited to hear that Tim was doing a solo acoustic set in town, this was the reason I headed to the show in the first place. I was also very pleasantly surprised by the outstanding show [...]

Named for the distance from their hometown of Cincinnati to Graceland, 500 Miles to Memphis has created a charismatic brand of punk rock with an emphasis on the twang of Bluegrass and Country. Composed of Ryan Malott (vocals, guitar), Noah Sugarman (guitar, vocals), Jeff Snyder (bass), Kevin Hogle (drums), David Rhodes Brown (lap steel), Elaina Brown (keyboard, vocals), this cowpunk sextet is sure to appeal to the masses. This past February, the band released their third album We've Built Up to Nothing. The release was produced by platinum award-winning producer, Erwin Musper (Scorpions, Van Halen, Def Leppard, David Bowie, Mick [...]

One of my absolute favorite albums of a few years ago is the incredible Sunshine In A Shot Glass from Cincinnati's 500 Miles To Memphis . That album is overflowing with (quite possibly) the best and most energetic merging of country and punk rock I've ever heard. Even 500MTM singer Ryan Mallot's EP with Kelly Thomas from last year is amazing. It all leads me to the question I've been asking and reconsidering ever since first hearing the new 500MTM album We've Built Up To Nothing a few weeks ago, "Why was I [...]

I've been waiting for what seems like forever for a new record from Cincinnati's 500 Miles To Memphis , and while this isn't technically the, I was still super excited when I got this in the mail a few weeks back. This 5 song EP is a collaboration between Ryan Mallot (the frontman for 500 Miles to Memphis) and Kelly Thomas (who sings in The Fabulous Pickups). It's nothing short of great, well, if you like your country music soaked with alcohol and heartache and and excellent male/female vocal harmonies. There's also [...]

Thursday feels like the real first day of the festival, which is no surprise really, considering the fact that there are fifteen different showcases for you to choose from, or hop in between. Yes, FIFTEEN. It's enough to make your head spin, which is one of the main reasons I decided to do these showcase-by-showcase preview posts in the first place. This is going to be a night of tough decisions no matter what your tastes in music veer towards - you've got several different brands of rock and singer-songwriter stuff to choose from. [...]
Where has 500 Miles To Memphis been all my life and why haven't I been hearing about them everywhere? Especially with their debut album recently released by Deep Elm Records ? This Cincinnati-based band's debut full-length Sunshine In A Shot Glass is simply fucking amazing. Review over. But seriously, this album is filled with the sort of bittersweet country punk that both punks and rednecks can't help but love. Seriously. It's instrumentally ambitious but never approaches wankery as fiddles, slide guitar, pedal steel, organs, [...]
