Tonight is the first night of the May residency of AVI BUFFALO at The Echo, and Future Sounds was more than eager to help spread the word and "Present" the night. Avi and the gang recently played our Rumble: LA party and if we weren't already impressed by the music, seeing this band perform live, we absolutely fell in love with them. We spent some time with the band and got this great interview out of them > { Read Interview }. For a taste of what you can [...]

[Happy birthday, Mac Davis -- I hope you're keeping it in the fairway ...] The Ettes' female-fronted garage rock, first unleashed on L.A. ears about four years ago, is hardly better than on its September release "Look at Life Again Soon" — urgent, low-fi, gnarly and making you wonder who'd win if the Ramones arm-wrestled the Runaways. The trio departed L.A. for the vagabond life over a year ago, recorded their album in London and return to familiar Silver Lake environs for a show at Spaceland, where Useless Keys [...]

Cory Brown hasn't bought new jeans in three years. I am not sure if he is making a joke when he states this at the Bandwidth Music and Technology Conference, though he says it with a laugh. I don't think the founder of local label Absolutely Kosher is trying explicitly to give us intimate details of his personal life. Instead, he's giving a personal touch when describing an industry that has seen much change and is currently in a difficult state. For an industry that was once built on CDs, magazine reviews and [...]

Meet the multifaceted Alisha Westerman . She has been a solo act for years, but recently she has created a few new projects. Her father, Llewellyn Westerman , is a musician-turned-sailor who resides in the Virgin Islands. He has been a major influence on the Alisha's laid back, whimsical, Indie, Caribbean, "be-careful-because-hurricanes -do-haunt-the-islands" style. Her vocals have been featured on tracks by Steve Aoki , 60 Watt Kid , 2Mex and Ikey Owens of the Mars Volta. Alisha and her sisters (pictured above) have a band called Mellow Mood, named [...]

As I start to reflect on my albums of the year, I need to catch up on my weekly releases of what came out this year. 11/6/07 Top New Releases: Citay : Little Kingdom (Dead Oceans) - The best way to describe this one is mellow stoner rock. It's full of guitar jams and informed by a lot of your favorite music from the 1970s. There are songs that sound like acoustic Led Zeppelin, and Meddle-era Pink Floyd. If you love zoning out to guitar riffs (both acoustic and electric) then [...]

Also at Thursday at The Silverlake Lounge Francisco [...]

School consumed my life last week, so I was not able to get you your weekly release post. Fear not, because I have combined both weeks into one massive post. Week of 11/6: Last week was a week of EPs. It seems that a number of our favorite artists could not wait to give us some new music, so they put out EPs to hold us over while they finish their new albums. The first EP for the week is from one of my [...]

60 Watt Kid are a psychedelic trio from San Fransisco who have just released their self-titled debut album on SoCal's Absolutely Kosher records. They have a unique sound thanks to their affection of analog beats, electronic glitches, homemade samples, and "wacked intertwining finger picking." True to psychedelic form, 60 Watt Kid openly enjoy altering their format and "getting lost in the space where the sound is our only friend." Their lyrics vary from talking with aliens to more ordinary life experiences, and their influences flutter somewhere between the psych/folk of Animal Collective, the art/punk of Talking Heads, and the interactive/live [...]

Sitting down tonight to put together this week's edition of The Daily Graboid (a day late, sorry), it dawned on me how close we are to the end of year already. It's hard to believe, but as each chilly night reinforces that fact, the more we'll begin to notice the dwindling amount of good album releases. I'm sure there will be a few gems here and there, but for now the geek in me is focusing on the onslaught of video game releases (hello Super Mario Galaxy , COD4 [...]
I guess I should have shared this when it was originally posted, but I've been too busy wasting my time on Facebook. It's number 92 of Festival City Radio . N ew releases for yesterday, November 6: Bob Trimble - "Night at the Asylum" (0:00) Jeremy Jay - " Light Beam " (5:00) Citay - " First Fantasy " (11:10) [...]
Will you be Grizzly Bear's friend too? As the year draws to a close, it becomes more and more evident that the big guns have already fired. While the number of highly anticipated new albums has dropped precipitously - just compare to a month or two ago - there's still plenty of time for the sleepers to ease on in. Grizzly Bear's EP of covers and re-interpretations and Sigur Ros' dual EPs released on one disc will be at the top of the stack for many record buyers, [...]

CMJ 2007 will be remembered for ... not a lot, sadly. And not just 'cause everybody was boozed up. Folks will probably hold on to how it was every bit as exhausting as years past but not every bit as exciting, and the hype-train surrounding Black Kids, particularly as we wait to see how it all pans out. But along the way we managed to take in some great sets, we met some fine folks, and we finally learned how to party . Speaking of our lesson in debauchery: Some of you have asked for the outtakes from our [...]
