Writer Nathan Meunier interviewed Alec Empire about his Gameboy album which originally was released in 1998. Since then game boy music has really developed into a genre of its own. We had some request from subscribers to re-publish the interview as it is hard to find on the internet. ALEC EMPIRE ON "WE PUNK EINHEIT" -How did you come to use the game boy as a tool for creating music? ALEC: It was very obvious to me. When I started Atari Teenage Riot, [...]

Mark December 4th through the 7th on your calendars, because this year's Blip Festival is going to make you do one of two things: go to New York City or stay very far away from New York City. This is the third annual 8-bit music festival sponsored by the NYC artist collective 8BITPEOPLES, and it's due to feature about 40 different acts and a slew of visuals, workshops, and presentations that venture into the world of 8-bit music. This MP3 comes from one of the many performers scheduled to be at the festival, Nullsleep. You can [...]

Bob Ostertag - w00t (Contra Excerpt) I know this is old but bear with me for a second here. I wasn't just like, "Oh, I never wrote about Ostertag's w00t so I should do that now." Not that that's a bad thing. But, well, whatever. Here we go. I was surfing some netlabels, found a sweet netlabel blog ( Netlabels Noises ), and somehow ended up on Bob Ostertag's website where I found [...]
Playlisted by Locodice, Gregor Tresher, Dubfire, James Holden, Hernan Cattaneo, Oliver Koletzki, Davide Squillace, Daso, Martin Eyerer, Len Faki...Florian Meindl needs no introduction: thanks to his quality releases for labels like Trapez, Flash, Herzblut, Kling Klong, he's one of the electronic producers to watch!!! 8 Bit Romance is a pure deep-techno beauty, package is [...]

So, I knew that once Crystal Castles made their mark others would follow. That group is You Love Her Coz She's Dead . They are bit more 8-bit than Crystal Castles, but just as much fun. This is the song featured on Kitsune Compilation 6 called Superheroes due out in October. Enjoy Bitches! You Love Her Coz She's Dead - Superheroes

Swedish electronica/hiphop/glitch/8-bi t producer Leoparden is finally releasing his first LP. It's an intense moodswing that takes you on a journey. Take an hour, relax, put on some headphones and enjoy. Download the complete 10 track album on Leopardens MySpace . Leoparden - "Oneone" (zShare)
So there is a show at our house friday, if you somehow stumble on this blog without knowing that from other channels. It is an "8 bit showcase" so we will see how that evening turns out. Ok. Music thoughts. This is sort of a retro bit of music thoughts. The first Interpol album is awesome. Even if its a rip-off (specifically of Joy Division...an assertion which their later albums would prove correct beyond reasonable doubt) Joy Division never wrote those songs on the first album. The only giveaway is the [...]

I t's been a while since we heard from Plimsouls . He's been busy working on new tracks and remixes, aswell as on this nice Bloc Party edit. Have a listen, and be sure to check out his Myspace! Bloc Party - Signs (Plimsouls Edit) (YSI) Plimsouls - A [...]

There are two tracks that I definitely need to hear. These will give some serious damage to dancefloors - I tell you! 8 Swedish nerds that love to be nerds and know everything about all the vocoders/synthesizers/nintendo wii's in the world. YES! Slagsmaalsklubben - Sponsored By Destiny And a Norwegian guy who believes in free electronic music for everyone. YES! Binärpilot - Tokyomatrix 3000 I gotta say: ENJOY!

sBACH - Untitled 5 I love when shit like this happens. You take a guitarist from one amazingly ridiculous band (Spencer Seim of Hella), give him an Atari, and let him go crazy. What you end up with is sBACH (like from Star Trek, get it?). sBACH is noisy, catchy, 8-bit math rawk. But Seim didn't forsake traditional instruments on this record and that's what makes it so great. He's in fine form and does triple+ [...]
The 8-bit genre seems to be in bloom after Crystal Castles breathed life into the gameboys and atari-keyboards all around the world. Now, several other bands seem to achieve succes with their 8-bit sounds, and while I'm not very impressed with most of them, You Love Her Coz She's Dead managed to win me over. The style is a little more horror'ish than Crystal Castles and everything is a bit more crazy and messy, but that doesn't make the music less amazing. There's no looking back just a pursuit of musical kicks and You Love Her Coz She's Dead will [...]

I tell you a true story today: One of my brothers (yes we still say "brothers" to our friends, cause we're all only children) sat in the kitchen today, when I started to spin this track. He suddenly fell off his chair, stood up, sat down again, fell again, stood up again, sat down on his chair, fell off it, stood up, sat down on his lovely chair, fell off it, stood up nerved the fourth time, sat there a minute, fell off rough again, broke his right hand, stood up again wordless, sat there, dropped off his [...]
ALARM! .. [...]
Paza Rahm - Teen Hipster I get the feeling that song titles can be pretty random sometimes (see Mogwai). And silly me, I thought that was the case for Paza Rahm's "Teen Hipster" as well. And, yeah, I was really wrong. Not only is this track totally party-worthy, but the last minute of it sounds like it could be the soundtrack to the last dance at a high school graduation party while everyone is having the best time ever [...]

These guys are guaranteed to be massive. They sound like Crystal Castles, have DEAD last names, and have been picked up by Kitsune for an EP in November and a slot on Maison Compilation 6. I just wrote a review of the movie Blip Festival: Reformat The Planet, a documentary about 8 bit music and the festival exclusively featuring 8 bit musicians. And because this is technically a music blog and it was a movie review, I posted it on my movie blog. Makes sense, right? Anyway, it was a great movie and I highly recommend both it and my review of it (obviously). You can check out the review over on Closet One and (up until the 21st) you can stream the movie at Pitchfork.TV .

LA electro crew Mega Wand are Rachel Levy and Mishal Hashmi, an unsigned set of ladies who harness all sorts of 8-bit sounds and aggressive yelps, drifting somewhere along the awesome spectrum near a Broadcast or a Crystal Castles. It's the kind of thing you can expect to hear in a Nissan commercial or at some hipster spot where you can play "Galaga". Both of which, of course, we're into. It's not terribly special or whatever, but right now, we're totally into how fun this all sounds. Plus, it's really making us want to [...]
Check this out while its streaming on pitchfork.tv. its a movie about the 8bit scene, and is way baller. check it here . Trailer: Also, check out this Bit Shifter song by the same name. Bit Shifter - Reformat the Planet (YSI) Bit Shifter - Reformat the Planet (zshare) Rock it
