Seminal house classic given a really nice and subtle remix from one of NYC's finest Justin Strauss back in 1990. Sounding fresher than it did 20 years ago I still can't get enough of those pads, I think 808 state single handed-ly inspired a new generation of emotive house producers... From the notes "Pacific 0101, 212, and 516 are Justin Strauss remixes which all use the clarinet and loon samples from 202, but restore and more prominently feature the original bassline, and use percussion more akin to [...]

To the loyal Versions readers who have noticed the large swaths of time in between posts these days (as well as many unfortunately unanswered emails) I've been hard at work on a big side project the last 4 months. But the absentee landlord does have a (very long-winded) explanation. Despite being immersed in west coast culture all my life, sadly I can't skate, I can barely surf and I don't cycle (motor, fixie or otherwise). This was thanks in no large part to an overprotective mother, who wouldn't let me near a butter knife until I was [...]

A new series for the next couple of weeks and some rare tracks from 73s. Jockey Slut was an excellent Manchester-based dance magaine who decided in 1998 that it would be a good idea to release a series of 73 singles from different acts at the rate of one a month during 1999. They offered readers the chance to get a discount if they paid upfront for all 12 singles. Being the trainspotter that I am, I jumped at the chance. For the first couple of months it went well. Then it became more erratic and in the end [...]

This time its the artist themselves remixing the classic. 808 State have released Blueprint , a compilation of their best stuff. And as part of that they've remixed some of their classics. Here's a remix of Cubik for you to download. I had already heard the new remix of In Yer Face and that was pretty disappointing, since it lost some of the aggression that made the track. So, how about what they've done to Cubik ? This is a lot more bleepy than I remember and even a bit chip. Thankfully, it [...]
The beats for your feets are here - a wicked Greg Wilson mash-up of Fujiya & Miyagi's 'Ankle Injuries' and Madonna's 'Ray Of Light', a nice edit of a Lou Rawls classic, an 808 State anniversary remix, and tracks from Korallreven & Recloose. _________________Fujiya & Miyagi vs. Madonna - Fujiya & Madge (Greg Wilson Mash Up)Lou Rawls - You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine (Womack ReWork)808

I rarely post music that I was into when it was originally released, but I can proudly say that I was listening to music by tonight's artists back when they were the cutting edge of all things electronic. I'm not that cool though, I wasn't rocking out to these at illegal midnight raves or anything like that. No, instead they served as background music to countless Doom marathons and Punisher comic book reading sessions. It's amazing I turned out as well-adjusted as I did. ...okay, maybe it's amazing that I'm not more fucked up than I already am. [...]

The original mix of Pacific State really is a marvellous piece of music. I remember buying Quadrastate from a short-lived record shop where I lived and that track just being played over and over. 808 State - Pacific State

808 State's 'Pacific State' should need no introduction, it's an easy weapon if you want to reduce men of a certain age to weep and rant on about their most euphoric club experiences - or is that just me? ...but dig a bit deeper the many 1989 issues of the single and you'll find this beautiful alternative take. 808 State - Pacific 909 (Mellow Birds Bonus Beats)
Go Mavs! Aw shit, now I have to update my blog five times next week! 808 State's 1992 classic In Yer Face gets a 2011 breaks makeover by the UK's Simon Harris. Not a bad effort but also not entirely successful. The ominous, magisterial Alastair Cooke sample at the start has been moved to later on and either altered or re-recorded. The net effect is to make it a bit faster and younger sounding. This loses the impact of sample. The rest of the track is a good updating of the track with what was already a strong track given extra oomph from the breaks beats. 808 State - In Yer Face (SImon Harris [...]

Benny Rodrigues first hit my radar awhile ago when I was in search of acid house that hypnotises and draws you into a dark repetitive hole. Rodrigues has released a few tracks all over the place (check his discogs page), his sound is one of quality drawing on influences from Armando , 808 State , Fast Eddie and Phuture to name a few of the 802s and 902s biggest acid house players. His 'I Like Acid' release is very much like the early years of acid house with [...]

For the first time in the history of Stockholm club scene one super promoter boldy goes where nobody every gone before. Booking the giants of Acid House to one venue, for one Valborg party, on april the 30th. The say Chigaco Acid House was re-invented in Manchester in late 80s by a Guy Called Gerald and 808 State and introduced to the masses of clubbers by Djs like Jon Dasilva and Danny Rampling. The music revolution was a fact, followed by the legendary warehouse parties of the early 90s as well as legal countermessures as [...]

808 State : One in Ten [ purchase ] This is not the post I set out to do. It's all the fault of a reader named Leopold Stotch . Two years ago, Stotch left a comment on one of my posts. It was the second part of my survey of polyrhythm, from Tricky Beats week. I had posted Help Me Somebody, by Brian Eno and David Byrne. Byrne and Eno had created an entire album of music built around samples of talk shows, radio preachers, and other spoken word [...]

Music heads in London quickly put together a Japan Disaster Benefit to benefit the British Red Cross for this upcoming Sunday, so it seems only fitting that the North would have their own event. Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook is better known these days as the proud proprietor of FAC 251, a new music and dance club is situated in the old head offices of Factory Records in Manchester city centre. Hook and his band the Light, along with house luminaries [...]
Here's Hounds Of Hate's creepy new music with a creepy new video. If those guys ever bought the farm -God forbid, knock on wood, hail Mary full of grace- people would say stuff like 'they were too weird to live'. That's about the best posthumous compliment anyone can receive.
