The theme for this year's First Fridays series at the Natural History Museum is "This Time It's Personal," and that concept could hardly have been better realized in music than by A.A. Bondy and Father John Misty . As he has in other recent stops in L.A. behind his latest album "Believers," Bondy on Friday night instilled a haunting quality into his Americana, hypnotizing all who were considerate enough to halt their conversations during his set (and many weren't). Father John Misty found frontman Josh Tillman (ex-Fleet Foxes) in high theatrical spirit as [...]

Over the last 14 years, Pickathon Music Festival has grown into a premiere summer destination for music lovers and performers alike. Zale Schoenborn started the scrappy festival with his wife, family, and some friends, and a continued family-run mentality has kept it a unique experience. Situated on Pendarvis Farm outside of Portland, OR, Pickathon's five core organizers have designed unparalleled sustainability efforts and a community atmosphere that has musicians and fans returning year after year. With another indie-all star lineup, neigh perfected greening practices, and their projected first-ever sell-out, this year might be the festival's finest yet. [...]

It's that time of year to look back on the past 12 months and say "what the hell happened to the last 12 months?!". It's also that time of year where us music bloggers and self-proclaimed critics take the time to put together some Best Of lists for your reading pleasure. The biggest struggle when putting together this list is how to rank the albums. What exactly is the difference between a #1 and a #2 album? Without doubt, Viva Brother's "Darling Buds of May" was the song I listened to the most in 2011 and the album it comes from is pretty damn good. But is it my favorite album as a whole? The Damnwells have consistently put out great material and I'm sure I listened to No One Listens to the Band Anymore more, front to back, than any album on the list but did I do that because [...]

This year's list of favorites is fairly sedate (even for me), with just a little ruckus here and there. Lots of morning-coffee music, which I guess says something about my 2011. But music's strength is its pliability. It can be whatever you need it to be at the moment, especially when we have instant access to virtually any song ever recorded, often for free . Video: Father John Misty – The Misguided Ayahuasca Tea Session
I first raved about Father John Misty when his video for "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" premiered back in January. Since then, I've been lucky enough meet the man himself for an interview and listen to an early advance of his album Fear Fun . All in all, the album is definitely one of my favorites of the year and it's a perfect snapshot of an artist rediscovering his passion for songwriting in an abstract way that's still very sincere. Father John Misty was at SXSW last week spreading the gospel and Dangerous Minds caught up [...]

A List of Noteworthy Lists
There are lots— lots —of end-of-year lists out there right now. I've sifted through so many lists for so many years that the very prospect of ingesting them all has become too tedious to bear. I've spent some time cycling through the tens (hundreds) of songs/albums on the lists below and have come away with something worthwhile from all of them. (Related, a couple of weeks [...]
