Tweet Music can be a funny thing. You can go years not knowing that a song you heard way back happens to be the same band that you are currently digging. For me, the track was "Lassoo" off 2008's "Neptune" . I probably heard it at some party held by someone more musically inclined than me at the time. Fast forward to the November 2011 release of "Bruiser" . I'm listening to this fantastic new offering from a band I'm having trouble [...]

Richard Dumas A number of words serve as accurate descriptors of Nottingham's Tindersticks - "smoky", "noirish", "soulful" all work - but if you had to narrow it down to just one, then "cinematic" would be as good as any. Their ability to create, define and enhance an atmosphere or mood makes them an ideal choice to provide the sounds to moving pictures, and for French director Claire Denis , that's what they've done. Tindersticks, either as a group or as individuals, have scored six of Denis' films and now those soundtracks have been [...]

Though you don't hear much about The Cardigans anymore, the great Nina Persson has kept busy phillips , making music happen with Danger Mouse and Mark Linkous from Sparklehorse. She's also part of 'A Camp', and this sweeping track from last year plays up my favorite elements in her voice: wistfulness and slyness (almost a sneering). A Camp: Love Has Left the Room.mp3

First, there was this French song , by our beloved husky superstar Vanessa Contenay-Quinones, together with her O's (don't forget to check out her new song !). Then, while searching for non-English filles to play in my podcast , I bumped onto Ania Dabrowska (pictured). A star in Poland, where she scored a hit with the same song about Charlie Charlie, only in Polish . Then I found out that Charlie Charlie was written by O's member Niclas Frisk , who originally wrote it in English (in 2001) for Nina Persson's A [...]

Mark Linkous committed suicide over the weekend, and among the many remembrances of and tributes to the Sparklehorse main man is the following, penned by ex-Grandaddy guitarist Jim Fairchild, who now makes music as All Smiles , and sent today to his e-mail list: Among many of the great memories I have of my happy times in rock and roll, one of the happiest comes from a festival in the U.K. in the summer of 2001. Grandaddy was playing on the same day as [...]

Primary 1 follows up his two massive collaborations with Riton, "Who's There?" and "Radiates" with the track "The Blues" that features Swedish singstress Nina Persson (of The Cardigans and A Camp fame). "The Blues" is taken from his forthcoming debut album (which will be out sometime this autumn on Atlantic Records). The track will also be released on super-limited vinyl. Primary 1 (ft. Nina Persson) - The Blues (Sendspace)

On Monday evening, I watched Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth for the first time. This 1976 film was the fourth that Roeg directed and I had already seen and enjoyed his previous three: Performance (co-directed with Donald Cammell), Walkabout and, particularly, Don't Look Now . Another reason I wanted to see the film was because it features David Bowie in the titular role of Thomas Newton. Newton is an alien on a mission to bring water back to his dying planet. Like Roeg's previous films, it's never completely [...]

2009 is fading fast. I am still trying to immortalize a few of my favorite songs from this year past by posting them again. Here is another song that would fit perfectly in to the movie that is constantly playing in my head. Maybe it's the boy/girl vocals, or maybe it's the way they call each other by name, I'm not sure, but something about this song just makes me smile. The band is A Camp - Nina Perrson of the Cardigans, and singer/songwriter Nicolai Dunger - and the song is perfect for some black and white scene in that [...]

This is the final part. Part One can be found here . Part Two is over here . Of note: The Gigi song is a very last-minute entry, as I heard it for the first time just a couple days ago. Other than the description over at Fluxblog (where I found the song), I don't know anything else about this band. It flows nicely into the A Camp song that follows, though. As stated in the prior parts, if you like what you hear, please spread some holiday cheer to the artists [...]

Download the MP3 Sampler (.zip) 1. David Mead - Almost & Always On the MP3 sampler: Sicily Top of the pile for 2009 is the latest release from David Mead, a set of breathtakingly beautiful songs that barely break a sweat but leave a huge emotional impact. I know I'm not the only Mead fan who thought he'd peaked with 2004's magnificent Indiana - and, to be honest, the two records aren't stylistically comparable [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News When A Camp 's Nina Persson sang, "Now we're gonna party like it's 1699" at her band's show on Tuesday night, she was only half kidding. With plume-adorned microphone stands, an elegant grand piano, sunset-colored lamps and dark blue mood lighting, New York's Le Poisson Rouge was decorated more like an old-fashioned cabaret than a Manhattan music club. Persson, best known as the singer for Swedish band the Cardigans , fit right in with a lacy black-and-gray dress, feathered headband, and [...]
