Tele Noir is a new synth and guitar-driven dance pop project from A Fight to the Death frontman, CJ Bargamian. Musically it's more glossy and ebullient than AFTTD's smoky rock and eclectic gypsy soul, but fans of the veteran Atlanta group should find plenty to like in Bargamian's infectious, hook-heavy vocals, if not his thumping basslines and uptempo beats. Personally, I'd like to see him take his tracks out back and rough them up a bit to give them more of a jagged edge, but as a starting point, they certainly show some promise. Currently, [...]

With just a couple of days left before the release of their new EP, Keep Warm , A Fight to the Death have unveiled a second track for fans to peruse. Those looking for a followup to the cool nocturnal rumblings that made their first single "Paper Airplanes" such a treat, may, however, be disappointed. Instead "Like Dolls" exhibits some of that Mediterranean seaside gypsy soul that the band has put on display in the past. It's not exactly my cup of tea, but there's no doubting that the band does this sort of thing well mixing [...]

The first single from A Fight to the Death's upcoming EP, Keep Warm , is a smoky, late night slow churner that feels dark, mysterious and suave all at the same time. It's amazing what a simple organ melody, some scratchy guitar and warm, mellow vocals can do when strung together as seamlessly as these guys do it here. And it certainly doesn't hurt that those verses lead so brilliantly into a huge hook of a chorus. But what really seals it for me is that quiet lull in the center; just around the time you think [...]

Another terrific month of Atlanta music in now in the books. April saw a steady stream of solid releases including two of my favorite local records so far this year in the form of Places' new joint, March , and Jupiter Watts' immaculate five-song stunner, Take Time . Both those albums are stellar and well worth checking out. There was also the usual array of relatively unannounced new records that caught me by surprise. The big one in this category was the new mixtape from local rapper, Translee . The 21 [...]

Originally available as a B-side to their 2010 limited-edition holiday single (only 50 copies were released to the public), "Dirty Souls" finds A Fight to the Death sounding quietly confident, full of verve and smoky charm. It's a song that succeeds in part on the strength of its details—the gentle pulse of the organ, the softly shuffling drums, the spiraling guitar wailing in the distance. In truth, it's a tale of two halves, with the first leaning towards a more reflective sound and the second taking on a decidedly more upbeat direction, full of jangly guitars and driving [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Wu-Tang Clan with DJ Kash Tuesday, December 14 Center Stage - 1374 West Peachtree Street NW in Atlanta 30309 Admission is $41.50 / Purchase Tickets THE BEST OF THE REST: Atlanta, get ready to throw your Ws up y'all, the Wu is coming to town! By Matt Jarrard This is the first of a multi-part series profiling local musicians, and their day jobs. I always find myself at concerts thinking: "Hmmmm...I wonder what he/she does from 9-5?" So, I'm going to start asking that question... and so far the answers have been pretty interesting. If there's anyone you'd like for me to ask, be sure to let me know....and I'll go ask them! CJ Bargamian from A Fight To The Death [...]

The new A Fight To The Death record, Gesture Of A Gentleman , is the most impressive release yet from a very talented Atlanta outfit. Their world-spanning collection of antique aesthetics is a bit far out of my taste range, but the music is so good that I can still thoroughly enjoy it. They will be at The Earl Saturday, and here is a video of them performing at Georgia State's Digital Arts Entertainment Lab: A Fight To The Death "Grant Park" IndieATL Session Song from Gesture Of [...]
