For today's Roll Call we call out CJ Bargamianof A Fight to the Death

I noticed this last week on Noot d' Noot 's blog and thought that it was very cool: Jah Scorp has been working on an ATL Genome for some time now, and Mark from Quadiliacha has realized his vision with this fully interactive graph. See how it all ties together HERE . Make sure to go to fullscreen mode, it's much easier to use. It's scope is a bit limited, but it also has way too many bands I had never heard of before. I did [...]

Remember when Drive A Faster Car broke the news about the Save Paste campaign? Paste Magazine was having a bit of financial difficulty and thanks to tons of musicians donating tracks and readers donating their dollars in exchange, they are doing much better! DaFC also volunteered to help coordinate a ...

I made my way into the festival to grab some breakfast, and then caught the end of The Slackey Family , who weren't very memorable. As soon as that ended, This Piano Plays Itself unleashed a sonic assault that brought most of the sparse festival crowd over to witness. Their set was only comprised of two newer songs, but they were probably each about ten minutes long. This was the first show with Doug from the now defunct Athens band Kebert Xela in the lineup, and this new 5-piece incarnation was blissful controlled chaos. [...]

While I tend to keep the conversation around here on progressive, forward looking artists, I can still appreciate a more conservative, retro approach when it's done well. Here are three local examples that can dig into older styles and still keep me more than interested: Dead Confederate Dead Confederate @ The Earl (6/7/08) Dead Confederate 's debut LP Wrecking Ball sees the band really define their sound. They [...]

Seriously, until last Saturday, I hadn't been to Lenny's for months . Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, but I couldn't find a single show on their calendar that ranked higher than "I'll do this if all my favorite venues, bars, and strip clubs all catch fire on the same night." But Bean's got a great show booked for this Saturday: Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun , The Interiors , and A Fight to the Death . (coincidentally, all of those bands have played/will play sessions with Have You Heard.)

The pedal steel playing, accordian pumping rockers A Fight to the Death came in to lay down some alt-western with us. They pay special attention to arrangement and creating a sound more full than the typical rock drone. I saw two great shows this weekend, both of which relied pretty heavily on lap steels for their sounds. Maybe it was a coincidence... or maybe the lap steel's making a comeback. Are lap steels the new violins/recorders of indy music? I saw Baton Rouge based Cohen and the Ghost this Friday at Wonderroot . They have a pretty good setup - guitar, bass, violin, drums, and a second guitar. But the second guitarist switches between instruments almost every song, going from guitar to mandolin [...]
