I know. I know. The delay between posts... As ever, apologies. Work and football have taken up an awful lot of time in the last few weeks, but now it's time for a change. However, one other thing has slowed down my posting - I really haven't come across anything lately that blew me away enough to warrant posting, and so I was awaiting the release of new albums by Tom McRae and Frightened Rabbit, to change that. That was, until, Robert left me a comment . And after visiting Robert's wonderful website , [...]

(Very late, I know.) No Merriweather Post Pavilion , Bitte Orca nor Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix here. Just 10 albums that were on constant rotation in 2009 (and check out the end for my favourite EP). Not necessarily critics' picks. Enjoy. 10. Jenny Owen Youngs - Transmitter Failure Transmitter Failure is by no means the perfect pop record, but it is certainly one of the better [...]
![CD Review – Bomb in a Birdcage, A Fine Frenzy [2009, Virgin]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2252364_lg.jpg)
Toronto - Bomb in a Birdcage is the latest album from the band A Fine Frenzy . The group is fronted by red-headed Alison Sudol and this release follows up their debut, One Cell In The Sea. The sophomore effort is a well assembled piece of singer-songwriter fare that exudes innocence. While this album has decidely more edge than the first, it remains within the same realm. This is a good thing. If anything, it demonstrates a logical evolution from the debut. Ms Sudol and her band have grown more comfortable with each other and the [...]

As always, this is a subjective project. I do think that everything on here is legitimately great, but I'm not going to pretend that my tastes correlate perfectly with some objective standard for the best. This is a list of the records I liked this year. Nothing more. The emphasis is on indie rock, but there's a bit of punk, quite a few instrumental records, a decent amount of rootsy stuff, and a bit more straight-up pop music than in previous years. In some ways, it's been a weak year for music. I'm [...]

Toronto - Best-ofs are hard for me to write. Firstly because I don't regularly acquaint myself with the newest-hottest @#X$ other than what's on Gizmodo, ebaum, and ISI (if you know what the last one is you really know my pain!) Second, the inferiority complex is particularly heightened during the holidays (what not to wear, what not to give as gifts, what not to say during a hotpot dinner with friends so they will not call the police to report an improperly sedated schizophrenic Chinese dude). But in comes the voice of Wade the Eternally Surprised: "write what you know [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , Canada This week the line-up for next summer's relaunched Lilith Fair was announced with Tegan and Sara -- currently enjoying a breakout year thanks to the crossover success of 'Sainthood' -- prominently placed on the bill. But while many already associate the Canadian twins with Lilith, especially given their folk-rock roots, Sara Quinn would like to set the record straight. "We didn't actually play Lilith Fair," she tells Spinner. "We [...]

I'm not a big fan of Christmas songs that go on and on about snow and whatnot because it's summer here now and it doesn't snow here in winter, let alone summer! The problem is though that whenever someone attempts to write an Aussie Christmas song, it's so tryhard and embarrassing that I can't listen without cringing and feeling an urgent need to stuff a barbecued shrimp up my nose. Still, I try my best to put my prejudices aside in favour of providing you with some halfway decent Christmas songs and so you may find a few [...]

I usually try to avoid the whole Christmas kicking in early thing. It hasn't snowed since early October; heck, we didn't even manage to get the last of the autumnal leaves off the lawn until Sunday. Over at Star Maker Machine , we're still talking about leftovers. It's cold, to be sure. But it certainly doesn't feel like Christmas, yet. But as the sitetracker shows, visitors and google searchers have been coming in for weeks with increasing frequency, looking for songs for their holiday mixtapes. [...]

A Fine Frenzy has released a Christmas EP, "Oh Blue Christmas" with some old and some new holiday tunes for the season.. check out "Wish You Well". Clare and the Reasons - Wish You Well grab the EP here
I have to admit, I kind of thought A Fine Frenzy was overrated. I liked her and all, but I felt like I know so many people who are head-over-heels in love with her and I just didn't get the obsession. On Wednesday night though, all that changed. I went to see her perform at the Gramercy Theatre and consider me converted. A Fine Frenzy (aka Alison Sudol) is a spectacular performer. First off, I

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Anyone looking for heaps of Christmas cheer this holiday season might want to avoid A Fine Frenzy 's 'Oh, Blue Christmas' EP. "It's called 'Oh, Blue Christmas,' after all," Los Angeles-based indie pop singer Alison Sudol, who records under the Fine Frenzy moniker, warns Spinner. Alongside three holiday classics -- 'Blue Christmas,' 'Winter Wonderland' and 'Christmas Time Is Here' from ' A Charlie Brown Christmas ' -- are three Fine Frenzy originals that up the melancholic-bittersweet factor. "It's always [...]

Alison Sudol, recording and performing as A Fine Frenzy, captured my attention a couple years ago with the release of her debut album, One Cell in the Sea . The piano-playing songstress has a lovely voice and a knack for writing captivating melodies that made her difficult to ignore despite the explosion of like-minded female singer/songwriters over the past few years. Sudol's new record, Bomb in a Birdcage , takes her in a different, and decidedly pop-oriented direction - showing a stronger, sexier side of A Fine Frenzy than we've heard before. Even the album covers tell the [...]
