It's the Valentine's Day edition of Friday on My Mind . The weekly collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. This Valentines Day give the person you love the gift of music. 1980's music, because nothing says I love you more than the gift of synthesizers, angular hair, brightly colored pants, tucked in shirts, and of coarse xylophones. Do you realize how many 80's bands had xylophones? Oh and white shoes. And the music videos seemed to have very little, if any, structure other than a small budget for a hair stylist and zero attention to [...]
Hallo meneer Mike Score, welkom in dit interview. Het is mij een waar genoegen. Geen verrassing hier, mate. Grappig haar heb je. Moet je wat mee doen. Meneer Score… Zeg maar Mike Score van 80's New Wave succesformatie A Flock Of Seagulls. Want dat zijn we, he! Kiddo's zoals jij vergeten dat gauw. I Ran [...]

For a decade plus following college, I participated in an extended childhood, existing on the periphery of the music industry, close enough to see behind the curtain, yet not so involved to reap financial rewards that would have sullied the experience. The time afforded me opportunities to do things and meet people that I would have thought unthinkable as a kid growing up in Sticksville, listening to music and devouring liner notes. Sometimes I will escape the office and the mind-numbing engagement in capitalistic endeavors to enjoy tobacco. I'll set the iPod [...]

As we closed in on Thanksgiving in 1982, I imagine that it seemed as though summer had never happened and never come 'round again. We were housebound more as raw days of wind and cold, stinging rain were a November staple in our part of the Midwest. For one of the first Novembers of my life, I had the radio to help battle the restlessness of being a kid confined to quarters. Casey Kasem and American Top 40 was a drowsy weekend morning staple. But there were sixty songs beyond the ones Casey counted [...]

The 80s revivalists are up for Best Pop Band at the SDMAs Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
Even though I don't believe New Wave exists, I can't think of any other way to describe A Flock Of Seagulls . 1982 was the year of 'I Ran (So Far Away)'. Buy A Flock Of Seagull's music from: Follow @electronicrumor

I can't tell you how many years I've been doing the summer concert series. It's my own personal concert series, but it happens every summer. The list of shows comes out and I'm picking my top ten for the summer. Ten might seem like a lot of concerts to you, but generally speaking I probably attend 10 or 15 between April 1st and September 20th. The other six months combined I probably see 5. They come and go so quickly I seem to space them as I look to the next one. Recently I have seen The Cars, Ray Manzarek & Roy [...]

Love Is All - I Ran [A Flock Of Seagulls] | zs

The Grammy Awards aired the other night. I watched The Simpsons . During the first few years in which I was suddenly fascinated by and paying attention to music, it was - like most people of a certain age, I suspect - through pop radio. The idea that there were awards given for songs was a compelling one. I think the first Grammy Awards show I remember was the one from 1981 and Christopher Cross' slew of trophies for his debut album from the prior year. At the time, Cross' shiny [...]

We believe in The Living Islands . Our favourite new pop duo of Tania Gallagher and Bart Demey, who divide their time between hometown Ghent-Belgium and the tropical island of Bali, are preparing their first EP for release in early 2011. Take a listen to their new brilliant track 'Little Beach', out soon on Tropical Doom Records, below. Keep your eyes peeled for The Living Islands... Little Beach by TheLivingIslands In case [...]
I had the mix up on time this month but I never got around to a writeup. It feels so late at this point that it almost loses its purpose, so I'll just point out that I think this Barbara Brown (aka Barbara & The Browns) track is superb, and only partially because it got sampled for last year's Diamond District album. Other than the Syl Johnson box set , the Kent collection of her 1966-1972 recordings is probably one of the better albums I've picked up this year, so why [...]

The Living Islands from Brussels are a band shrouded in mystery. The only thing we know is that they making twisted pop and tropical doom on nightly beaches, inspired by plants, movies, vectrex, thunderstorms & hot damp keyboards! After remixing Goose's new single 'Words', The Living Islands shares with us today their new track 'Wishing', which is a cover of A Flock of Seagulls' 1982 classic song 'Wishing' (If I Had a Photograph of You). Download it now! The Living Islands: 'Wishing' [ mp3 ] [ wav [...]

I've been banging on about this for a while now, you'll be glad to know it's finally here... If you haven't read anything about it, the idea is a simple one - chose a Peel Session song performed by your favourite artist and post it. Anywhere. If you are on Facebook or Twitter or have your own blog... It's easy to find a track. Google is your best friend obviously, but so is You Tube - just do a search for [...]

The first time I visited the UK, it was with a friend, TJ, and another friend of his, Donna, whom I didn't know. It was a memorable two and a half weeks in a rented Daewoo, beginning in London, hitting both coasts and and so many castles - courtesy of TJ's itinerary - that Donna and I began to refer to the trip as The Castle Hostage Tour. TJ kept us plied with cigarettes and candy, resulting in a trek during which tensions flared only once or twice and those periods defused rather quickly. For some [...]

Wild Party From: Texas, United States Wild Party are five gangly kids from the middle of Texas with a laptop, some beat up guitars and more energy than a kindergarten after a red bull overdose. They sound like The Killers after A Flock of Seagulls injection which is remarkably much much better than that sounds. Their debut single, [...]
Filed under: News , Book Club Niki Kanodia Growing up, music and pop culture critic Rob Sheffield had role models both positive and negative. Among the former, he explained Wednesday night, as he discussed his new book, ' Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut ,' at the Barnes and Noble store in Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Park Slope neighborhood, were his sisters. As Sheffield recalled, they would "get all the [...]

The Giant Panther is now part of the Mog Music Network. To celebrate I created an 80s New Wave playlist. Hoping to convince John to make one of his own, it's always great to get two different perspectives on a particular type of music. Head over to the playlist page to play the songs. I've included the playlist here and a few tracks. 1. Blasphemous Rumours by Depeche Mode 2. Shadowplay by Joy Division 3. A Forest by The Cure 4. Cut Dead by The Jesus & Mary Chain [...]
