Such is the amount of vinyl in the cupboard that I'm nowhere near finished the task of converting all the songs to mp3. I'm sort of doing it in a methodical way – the 7" singles that I've been amassing again have been converted, and I'm working my way through the 12" singles backwards from Z-A. I got to the letters F and E the other night, and this allowed me to listen to a couple of things I

Having already created a stir in US dance clubs with songs like Telecommunications and Modern Love Is Automatic , the Liverpool quartet A Flock Of Seagulls released their self-titled debut in late summer of 1982. With their name inspired by the book Jonathon Livingston Seagull and a musical style that fused guitar and New Wave synthesizers, the band managed to stand out from many of their contemporaries. One facet of their image, though, ensured that they would remain a pop culture item far outlasting the New Wave era - the hair. [...]
A few nights ago, when I was in the midst of my iTunes-and-iPod drama, I got just about to the point where you want to start banging your head against the wall. After having to restore my iPod numerous times and having difficulties actually transferring music to it, I was only able to end up with five songs on my usually lovely 160 GB. Luckily, one of those five songs was A Flock of Seagulls' "Space Age Love Song." I could be wrong, but I suspect for many people who lived through the [...]
Communication Pete Townshend: Communication - 5MB Communication is the process of transferring information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a medium in which the communicated information is understood by both sender and receiver. Communication requires that all parties understand a common language that is exchanged, There are auditory means, such as speaking, singing and sometimes tone of voice, and nonverbal, physical means, such as body language, sign language, paralanguage, touch, eye contact, or [...]

Today is NASA's 50th birthday . This may not be strictly music-related, but when I was a kid I would have been pretty content to be an astronaut. In fact, my parents put up a moonscape on one of my walls when I was about 7 years old (yes, I was and still am, a nerd). In honor of this fact, I thought I'd assemble some of my favorite, space-themed tunes. I applied 'space-themed' a little loosely, but I'm sure you'll forgive me. MP3 : Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine [...]

It's a slow news day and I can't seem to muster the energy to write anything of substance. Plus it's the weekend, so I thought I'd throw some random tunage your way. They're all so good that they end up being self-explanatory anyway. MP3 : A Flock of Seagulls - Telecommunication MP3 : The Buzzcocks - Orgasm Addict MP3 : Client - Here and Now (Cicada Remix) MP3 : Manhead - Birth, Death, Work, School MP3 [...]
1982 was a banner year for synthesizer acts and New Wave bands on the US pop charts. Acts like Human League, Men At Work, and The Go-Gos led the way of newcomers, but one band owed their place in pop culture history, in part, due to the lead singer's unusual hair style. That would be the Liverpool quartet A Flock Of Seagulls and the waterfall coiff of singer Mike Score. Having earned attention in US clubs in 1981 with singles like Telecommunication , A Flock Of Seagulls scored a pair of US Top 40 hits - [...]

One of our Vancouver friends, Dearest Michelle, is preparing to run her first full marathon: the the San Francisco Nike Women's Marathon in October of this year. Her primary motivation for doing such a daft thing is to raise money for the Canadian chapter of the The Leukemia & Lymphoma [...]

Here's one from the first rock show I ever attended - opening for the Go-Go's, thank you very much. (And thanks for taking me, Dad!) 1982, comin' atcha! I think this song rocks very hard. And yeah, that was before the singer did the hair thing. This one's for all the burners who are frantically trying to get their shit together. Breathe deeply - you'll be there soon, and it won't matter. With hands held high To the new sunrise, With open arms [...]

It's a snowy Valentine's Day here at Armagideon Time's HQ northwest of Boston, and despite the all the sweeping, shoveling, and sanding, it's rather nice. The wife planned for the blizzard in advance, so we're just going to ride out the storm all snug and cozy-like. Later we'll have a home-cooked pasta dinner and watch one of our favorite films on DVD. It might not seem that exciting, but it I think it's damn near perfect. In honor of the day, here's a double dose of new wave lovin' for your listening pleasure. [...]
This is - hopefully - a new regular feature on Music Of The Moment . I will travel back in time with you and introduce (or remind!) you of some great songs I grew up with and still think are worth listening to today. I will feature lots of 80ies music as it is the decade when I really discovered my love for music, but there'll also be some older stuff. So fasten your seatbelt and get ready for the first time travel! [...]

A quick little post for the first day of fall*. Get ready for cardigan sweaters, woolly tights, scarves... A bunch of friends are talking about renting a van & driving off for a day of pumpkin picking, apple cider drinking, corn maze running day of wholesomeness & I couldn't be more excited about it! But no haunted houses -- I hate 'em! ONE QUICK THING -- LISTEN TO MY INTERNET RADIO SHOW THIS MORNING - 10AM to NOON EST (OR CHECK OUT THE PODCAST)! OK? THANKS. [...]

One of my favorite movies of the past decade is the Ted Demme -directed Beautiful Girls . I fell in love with it the first time I saw it and I think I watched three or four times in a row the first time I rented it on video. The film is about a group of friends who come together for their high school reunion in the small town where they grew up. It boasts an amazing cast, including Timothy Hutton , Matt Dillon , Uma Thurman , Mira Sorvino , Michael Rapaport [...]
