It's that time of year to look back on the past 12 months and say "what the hell happened to the last 12 months?!". It's also that time of year where us music bloggers and self-proclaimed critics take the time to put together some Best Of lists for your reading pleasure. They don't really mean a whole lot and you can love 'em or leave 'em, but it seems like the right thing to do to sum up the year in preparation of the next. This year we're featuring personal lists from all of our fantastic writers. [...]

As my musical taste has expanded, I've been trying to hit up some of the slightly more off the beaten path festivals that are out there, having been to many of the mega festivals already. So this year, a few of us decided we were going to head to the Jersey shore, more specifically Asbury Park, to check out one of the much lauded festivals thrown by All Tomorrow's Parties. This would be the inaugural US version of the I'll Be Your Mirror festival and this time it was curated by none other than Portishead and it had [...]

Though the location has changed , the community feel of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival experience is still intact on New Jersey's Asbury Park boardwalk. Though nothing can match the vibe and quarters of Kutsher's - it was like the set of a B-movie horror flick where all festival attendees and participants boarded together - the US debut of ATP: I'll Be Your Mirror definitely has a lot of things going for it. The main venues, the Convention Center and the Paramount Theatre, showcased a couple of special experiences last night, and it certainly doesn't hurt that the rooms [...]

Toronto - Lately, there's been a fair number of Elephant Six alumni making their way through our town - Olivia Tremor Control and Music Tapes a little over a week ago, Jeff Mangum's sold out show back in August at Trinity St. Paul's, and now former Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes' current band A Hawk And A Hacksaw . Touring behind their latest album Cervantine , the New Mexico band played a mostly instrumental set of their heavily Balkan folk-influenced tunes. Accordion and Violin abounded, along with a smattering of trumpet at times, some of it with a mariachi [...]

Are you familiar with "vaudeville"? According to the wonderful (and always handy) Merriam-Webster , it's a noun that describes "a light often comic theatrical piece frequently combining pantomime, dialogue, dancing, and song" or "stage entertainment consisting of various acts (as performing animals, comedians, or singers)." Most of you are familiar with this sort of entertainment - especially if you live in a city - but if not, here's your chance to experience it. This weekend (that is, September 16-18), Chicago's Eckhart Park will play host to the inaugural Brilliant Corners of Popular Amusements (BCPA), becoming "a playground [...]

Apparently you people like music and stuff, right - that's why you're here? Well this week I like gardening. Yes, as if to demonstrate that I am taking all these accusations of being too old and too middle-class extremely seriously, this week I am far more excited about the back garden that I am about music, sorry. We've had a lot of rain this spring, so inevitably when we get a sunny week, as we did last week, everything blooms. This, I have to confess, as someone relatively new to gardening, is incredibly exciting. Any teenagers [...]

A Hawk and a Hacksaw have made their name by consistently delivering an insular world of Balkan folk with violinist Heather Trost and multi-instrumentalist/former Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes producing record after record of solid, traditional, eastern European style melodies for almost 10 years. While their new record, Cervantine, adds folk stylings from other parts of the world, the record retains everything that has made past Hawk and a Hacksaw albums good, if not entirely memorable. Early in the album, the rattling, rambunctious "Mana Thelo Enan Andra" features a vocal turn from guest Stephanie [...]

A Hawk and a Hacksaw released their fifth album at the beginning of this month: Cervantine . The Balkan folk duo has brought on a new series of collaborators to create the sounds on this LP, and while it is still an authentic reinterpretation of a foreign world, I'm having trouble finding the excitement I have on past releases. We're taking on the title track from this LP in this podcast. Is this song for you? Find out in this review. Review: A Hawk and a Hacksaw- Cervantine [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Around the World Courtesy A Hawk and a Hacksaw The Northern New Mexico town of Espanola is not generally viewed in a romantic light, for those who view it at all. Set about 25 miles up the Rio Grande Valley from Santa Fe, right before you really hit the stretch of the Rocky Mountains that rise up through the rest of the continent, it's the gateway to a region with a [...]
