Hello, Mr. President Barack Obama! (A Hawk And A Hacksaw - The Sparrow) A Hawk And A Hacksaw - The Water Under The Moon If forced to choose between live performances by Beirut or A Hawk And A Hacksaw I'd choose the latter almost every time. A Hawk And A Hacksaw are scores away from being the better band, but their songs are downright cinematic, at least on record, resulting in an infinitely more fascinating, albeit less [...]

Minneapolis' own Haley Bonar played @ Mercury Lounge Sunday evening & BrooklynVegan's Natasha Ryan was there to cover it. "Then came Haley Bonar . She had the young midwestern waitress feel to her persona, but her performance was commanding and her heartfelt lyrics and arrangements left a strong impression. Following her was a set by A Hawk and a Hacksaw . Then after what seemed like almost four hours, Great Lake Swimmers took the stage around 12:00am. They played a wonderful hour-long set with the full-on folk ensemble - banjo, acoustic guitars, [...]

according to the cd liner notes, jeremy barnes of a hawk and a hacksaw " plays accordion with his hands; two bass drums, cymbals and a gong with his feet; goat bells and a cow bell with his right knee; and sleigh bells and a cymbal with his head " in this live rendition of a traditional eastern european tune. try listening out for all of that in this two part song, which comprises both a quiet dance movement and a frantic, rousing finale, and which is available on the self titled collaboration of a hawk [...]

I didn't have enough time to interview anyone this week so I'm going to give you a heaping helping of tunes from the band performing at this week's Pitchfork Music Fest! There's a tone of music here, from every band (but one, bet you can't guess which!), which should get you amped up for the fest if you're heading to Chicago! If you're not, you can still enjoy all the fine tunes provided!
Who: A Hawk and a Hacksaw Location: Albuquerque, NM RIYL: Beirut, Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control Thoughts: The story of A Hawk and a Hacksaw is kind of a strange one. Despite being linked to some truly fantastic bands the band has never garnered too much attention for themselves, which is a damn shame because they are a fine band in their own right. Jeremy Barnes is probably better
Well, one thing leads to another and after picking through the list I mentioned the other day, discovered The Epochs , seen here performing beneath a humongous ice tray. I do not hate their air piano sound. Are baseball caps in rock are making a comeback? (See drummer.) Anything to replace fedoras, I say. Plus a few other old songs below, more for my own edification than anything else. Be sure to download the Epoch songs if you love the pop pop pop music like I do. And of course it goes without [...]
Rusland wint Eurosong.

Photo by Sean Pecknold The AV Club has declared this week "Spring Music Week" and as such, are running features about newish artists releasing records worth hearing this Spring. Leading things off is a piece on Seattle's Fleet Foxes who have already released their Sun Giant EP and will be following that up with their self-titled debut full-length on June 3. And if you missed their rather stunning performance at the El Mocambo last month , it looks like you'll have [...]

We posted the initial lineup for the Pitchfork Music Festival (July 18-20) earlier this month but they have announced a few new additions. On Friday night, the Pitchfork Music Festival and All Tomorrow's Parties present "Don't Look Back". Along with the previously announced performance by Public Enemy, Mission of Burma will play their just-reissued 1983 post-punk classic Vs. ! Along with Lex Records , The Leaf Label has stood out for me this year as a mark of quality in 2007, consistently releasing challenging independent music. The following are a sample of the new releases by Leaf this year as well as news of some of upcoming gigs. A Hawk and a Hacksaw are playing on Dublin 11th December in Crawdaddy. I sadly missed them when they supported Beirut in the Olympia last year , however I am going to be there for this one. This song [...]

"I thought you guys only listened to electronic music here," wundert sich Jeremy Barnes.
Some from youTube, some from Stage6 . You may need a Divx Web player to watch the Stage6 videos but the content is well worth it. Works best in Firefox as usual. Animal Collective Live @ Starlight Ballroom Philadelphia, PA [03.22.06] 1hr 48mins - great quality Battles (3-30-07, Empty Bottle, Chicago) 60mins [...]
So you dig a bit of Beirut and you'd like to hear more Eastern Folk Gypsy music. One option is going straight to the source, Taraf de Haidouks (frantic Romanian folk troupe) , Kocani Orkestar (Balkan Brass Band, song used in "Borat: The Movie") or the Electric Gypsyland compilations where Western artists such as Animal Collective, Tunng and Cibelle remix these Balkan groups. Also recommended is the soundtrack to 2005's Everything is Illuminated by Paul Cantelon and friends. Another option is to explore the work of Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost otherwise [...]

A Hawk and a Hacksaw .
I cannot also believe I live in a world where things like this are occurring : Kallen Ford and a friend were playing hacky sack outside Colorado’s Boulder County Courthouse when a police officer approached. The cop took their sack and issued Ford a $250 fine for “releasing projectiles on the mall.” Also in Great Britain, government officials say hospitals are too efficient. At least six of the nation’s health trusts have forced hospitals to create minimum waiting times for patients to receive treatment. Officials say the hospitals have [...]
