There are bands, like The Dismemberment Plan or Destroyer, the brutality of whose name belies the often sweet-natured, good humoured, delicate sounds contained within their work. And then there are bands like A Place To Bury Strangers , who sound just as confrontational as you would expect a band called "A Place To Bury Strangers" to sound. One has to wonder, are they limited by their name to only writing this deliberately ugly kind of music in the same way that Pete & The Pirates surely must wish they'd be allowed to write anything other [...]

Mick Rock I will be the first to admit to not really being able to tell where Bradford Cox's Deerhunter ends and his Atlas Sound begins. I know that the former is ostensibly a band and the latter a solo project, but to my ears the hazy, psychedelic rock that each project produces isn't exactly a world apart. Okay, Atlas Sound is more keys, less guitars, but they're both critically adored and don't really do a lot for me, despite on paper being the sort of thing I should totally dig. [...]

The word most commonly associated with A Place to Bury Strangers is "loud." More than just another reverb-loving shoegaze revivalist act, the Brooklyn noisesters push the boundaries of what a "wall of sound" can be. Frontman Oliver Ackerman went as far as creating his own pedals and founding the effects company, DIY studio, and performance space Death by Audio. Currently recording their third album, A Place to Bury Strangers will release a new EP, Onwards to the Wall , on February 6th. Recently, Consequence of Sound caught up with Ackerman to discuss the band's aesthetics, [...]
The title track from APTBS' new EP, which is due out tomorrow, is a compact piece of dark (loud) pop. "Onwards Towards the Wall" sees the Strangers at a place in their progression as a band where the hooks are a bit more plentiful and up in the mix and the rhythms are a bit more syncopated. The band is still loud as hell (Early in their career, APTBS were sometimes touted as "The Loudest Band in New York") but there's more of a tune in this new track then in some of the band's previous material. We're definitely psyched [...]

A Place to Bury Strangers :: Onwards to the Wall
What do we expect from our beloved musical acts who are so deeply rooted with a singular, albeit explosive, sound? At this point in their career A Place to Bury Strangers are unbeatable at creating the most devastating psychedelic rock out there. I mean, who really wants these guys to transition into a lighter version [...]

Album Stream: A Place To Bury Strangers – Onwards to the Wall
Brooklyn shoegaze mainstays A Place to Bury Strangers are gearing up for a busy 2012 – they have a new EP, Onwards to the Wall , and a long string of American tour dates all lined up already. You can stream that EP now via the Hype Machine – think My Bloody Valentine -esque waves of eardrum-splitting, decibel-meter-fracturing guitar scuzz and heavily processed vocals, but also think Radiohead's kraut-y, underwater-feeling bass drive, and you might be close. But whatever comparisons we make can't do justice to the EP's most beautiful, unique moments – the [...]

Atlas Sound to bring sound to very specific areas of the atlas
