" i felt a great disturbance in the force, as if a million souls cried out in torment and were silenced at once" that quote from some movie just about begins to describe the earth-shuddering impact of the recent news about canadian post-rock anarchists godspeed you! black emperor. to whit: godpseed have been on "indefinite hiatus" for five years. efrim, godspeed's 'frontman' ( pace bakunin) told website A why godspeed haven't done much (it's the economy, stupid, to paraphrase). website B [...]

Some people still call us a post rock band". Nosotros no cuestionaremos su afirmación, esta claro que no son una banda de post-rock al uso, ni tampoco una banda a la que se pueda comparar con ninguna otra del panorama [...]

When does a side project cease to be a side project? At this point, I think it's fair to say that A Silver Mt. Zion never really were a Godspeed You! Black Emperor side project. And now, with another new record on the horizon, the numbers certainly don't add up to side project: GY!BE: 3 albums (I guess you could argue 4); 1 EP ASMZ: 5 albums; 1 EP Over the past seven years I've certainly been guilty of slighting ASMZ and instead focusing most of my Constellation hopes [...]

Photograph: Juli II I was born in 1924. If I were a violin my age I wouldn't be one of the best. As a wine I'd be first-rate or I'd be vinegar. As a dog I'd be dead. As a book I'd just be getting expensive, or be thrown away by now. As a forest I'd be young; as a machine, ridiculous. As a human being, I'm tired, very tired. - Yehuda Amichai. [...]
" Silver Mt. Zion is a group led by founding Godspeed You! Black Emperor guitarist Efrim. Joined by fellow GYBE members Sophie (violin) and Thierry (contrabass), SMZ debuted with a performance at Constellation's Musique Fragile concert series in spring 1999 and went on to record their first record in November of that year. Built around Efrim's simple piano figures, the debut SMZ album also marks the first recording to document Thierry's move from electric to acoustic upright bass, and the first recorded instance of Efrim on vocals since a rare 1996 GYBE cassette release. Cameraman assisted by scrumpy The great thing about music is that everyone has a different opinion. The greater thing about Galactic Mystery Solvers is that it has two. Without further ado. Papa M: Day Three begins with a solo set from Dave Pajo, who seems to turn up at every ATP and to do something completely different [...]
[Post brought to you by reader J., expert on Canadian music (and other kinds too), and photographer extraordinaire. You can see some of his lovely photos at Jumps & Cuts .] Profoundly sad, inspired and visceral, A Silver Mount Zion's He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corners of Our Rooms (2000) is a rare thing in music, an album that captures almost perfectly a singular emotional experience. At times lonely and claustrophobic, its haunting themes of inconceivable sadness ring unfortunately too true. There [...]

Today officially marks the first day of fall, which is my favorite time of the year. It's definitely what I look forward to most with the transition into winter being the next. To me it's the most beautiful time time to be outside here in Auburn, walking around campus and taking in the changing leaves and the cool weather as the nights get just cold enough to put on a jacket (which is my favorite kind of weather). Some of my favorite memories happened during this as well, so that just adds to why [...]

I'd like to say that we here at Skatterbrain are the furst to bring you a storm mix, but that's not the case is it? I decided to make this yesterday morning but laziness and power outages kept getting in the way of publicizing my soundtrack for this particular occasion. The storm's slipped a little on my end by now, but it's still gloomy enough for this to work. For the rest of you this may range from very appropriate to completely irrelevent, and if irrelevency's your case then I might suggest folding this up and sticvking it in your [...]
