clarion alley series.2007 in my quest to record my vinyl sources into a digital format, leaving in the hisses and scratches, here are some more treats, i believe that are difficult to find outside of the vinyl medium. Digable Planets - Nickel Bags (Sneak A Beshu Mix) (Hip Hop) - from the 1992 12" of 'nickel bags'. nothing major added or taken away here, maybe a crisper hand clap? Digable Planets - Where I'm From (Aural G. Ride 12") (Hip Hop) - from the 12" in 1993 of [...]
This alphabetical trek through my CD collection has thrown up some really interesting stuff for me, things where I'd forgotten how much I loved them - hope you're enjoying them too. Liz Phair 's Exile in Guyville was one of my favourite albums during my last year at university and is one of the few instances where I've had a real-life High Fidelity moment - where you're idly browsing in a record shop (Record Collector in Sheffield, fact fans) and ask the assistant what's playing then buy it on the spot. If I remember [...]

Although I've always been in the Revolver camp instead of the Peppers camp, I've got to give props to this. Solid gold. Well done DK. Not sure about Speakerboxx/The Love Below being one of the top 20 hip hop albums, and indeed some of the other choices that made DK's list (Blue Lines hip hop?) but you can't argue with The Low End Theory's place (and yes, it's better than Midnight Marauders, no

The Passion of the Weiss and Straight Bangin' have called for bloggers to compile lists of their 25 favorite hip-hop albums and there's been a nice response so far. The lists that are submitted will be integrated using a simple weighted scoring system to create a kind of overall internet-consensus master list. It's a fun project and a nice, challenging exercise... particularly for someone who hasn't really compiled a list before (like me). I definitely enjoy reading them, but I've always felt that lists can be a bit arbitrary (especially those as openly subjective as "25 favorites"). [...]
Rest assured, Joey " Straight Bangin " and I are putting in work, trying to import the many ballots we received into spreadsheet form. Sadly, it takes a whole lot of time, so don't expect a full list until at least late next week. All apologies. In the meantime, here's a look at the next 25 that didn't make my ballot. 50. Atmosphere- Overcast! Before concluding that 2Pac was right when [...]

As you may have noticed, Passion of the Weiss, East Coast President, Joey "Straight Bangin' Litman" and I have put out a call to arms for bloggers to name their 25 Favorite Hip-Hop albums of all-time. Of course, its a sorta' pointless proposition, but so is blogging, so we figured why not combine the two and see what sort of consensus we can get. Anyhow, ballots are already trickling in, if you're interested in submitting one, send an e-mail to me at passionweiss@gmail.com or straightbangin@gmail.com. Expect a full list to simultaneously be broadcast on [...]

The 12th installment of I Used to Love H.E.R., a series in which artists/bloggers/writers discuss their most essential or favorite hip-hop albums ( read intro ) is a fantastic breakdown by Dale W. Miller, drummer for Palomar , on a straight-up classic. Palomar released All Things, Forests (on Misra ) last month to heady reviews ( 7.4 at Pitchfork among them). Miller takes on this album from the viewpoint as a fan but also puts it into a context of its effect on him as a musician. Palomar | [...]

So this week is the one year anniversary of J Dilla's untimely death. As I said back in April last year , it's sad that it takes the death of a person to recognise the value of their life's work but the sentiments around the remembrance are celebratory, life-affirming even, if you're familiar with the fruits of his talent which is what we have left. So I'd like to take some time to highlight some of the songs which have shaped the legacy of one of hip hop's greats as well as take in some of the things which [...]

So here's Side B of the Q-Tip Mix. Get Side A here and the cover art here (thanks to Garrison ). In the interest of time (and bandwidth), I know I'm missing a couple – notably, Jungle Brothers' Black is Black ; Nas' One Love (produced by Tip, who also sings the chorus); Organized Konfusion's Let's Organize (another chorus-only refrain for Tip). However, on this side, you'll get a previously unreleased De La Soul track from the A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays CD [...]

When you start something like ' Under the Influence ' you know that you are gonna get to hear some great new tunes and hear about artist's influences. A bonus of doing this is that you also get to be exposed to the passion that people have for music. All I can say is that if anyone in this world has passion for music it is the one and only Dubble D ! It is infectious. When I emailed him a few weeks ago, to ask if he'd be into contributing, I wasn't expecting a response in all honesty [...]
