It was past my bedtime when I did this, so, you know, just bear that in mind if I slurred a couple words. The music is GREAT though. If you didn't hear it yet, and you can't get enough seasonal tunes, be sure to hear part 1 of this year's Christmas special , or if you're hard-core, every Christmas special I've ever done . I had originally planned this post for Christmas day, but if you're anything like me, you've been listening to Christmas music since Thanksgiving. The holidays aren't complete with out some holiday tunes and hopefully you'll find some new favorites in today's GOOD. So in the immortal words of Billy Mack, "So if you really love Christmas, C'mon and let it snow." [p.s. i'm not 100% certain that all of these tracks came out this year, apologies in advance] ♪ Catwalk -- Christmas Don't Be Late (Alvin and the Chipmunks cover) [...]

Though the basic tenets of the movement include finding truth in a diversity of sources, thanks to the large number of post-Christian seekers in their membership, Unitarian Universalist congregations can be a bit oversensitive about "the Jesus thing". This makes seasonal celebration a bit tense. For example, in our own UU Society, though no one balked at last weekend's celebration of Hanukkah, and though we expect solid support for similar services on both Kwanza and Solstice in the coming weeks, past practice suggests we'd do well to avoid mention of the trinity, angels, miracles and the [...]

Maar laten we het ‘ns over Harlowe and the Great North Woods hebben. Inderdaad- Harlowe and the Great North Woods. Hoe ik op het spoor kwam van de band weet ik niet meer, maar ik was meteen verkocht toen ik hun debuut EP hoorde. De band uit, [...]

Festivals are a business. You pay them X amount of dollars and they give you a weekend of bands you love (along with sore feet and a sunburn). But one such festival is expanding on the model and going for more altruistic means of taking your cash. In addition putting an annual music festival that touts the always-incredible Portland music scene, PDX Pop Now! also serves as a non-profit organization that conducts a series of out reach programs (getting musicians to speak/perform at schools, free concerts on the steps of the City Hall, etc) around the [...]

A Weather - Spiders, Snakes It comes with the rain, usually. Or from the motel tap. Your gas station coffee. The sneeze on your shoulder. The mud on your boots. Socks inverted, reverted, tossed in the trunk. There, on the holes in the linens. Against the hum of lights. Between the pushpins in your office. On your neighbor's squeaking mattress. Under your mother's missed call. Even on the floss half-hanging from the rubbish, not yours. There, near the highway, by the gravel, times to think are the worst times to think; one should never [...]
Portland's A Weather earned a lot of respect with their hushed and intimate 2008 debut, The Cove . On their follow-up album, Everyday Balloons , they've expanded their sound a little bit - giving themselves some room to breath, but not too much. The songs still play like secrets whispered after midnight, but this time there's a little more texture surrounding them. Their music is dreamy, but in a nuts and bolts sort of way - there's no mystery in the production and you can hear everything here: every chord on the keyboard, every [...]
We've been posting a lot of videos this week, haven't we? We're streaky like that. Here we have a new, unrecorded A Weather tune as performed during the waning days of the Portland, 0re.-based slowcore outfit's recent tour supporting its sophomore set Everyday Balloons . The song was one of many highlights of the band's intimate set at P.A.'s Lounge in Somerville, MA last month. The performance above is from A Weather 's April 28 show at Off Broadway in St. Louis, and the song gets a little lost among the crowd noise of the larger [...]

It’s easy to think of A Weather ’s music as mellow. However, the truly amazing thing about their latest album is that if you really listen, and crank it up a bit louder than seems necessary, Everyday Balloons takes on an almost anthem-like aesthetic. This album plays equally well softly trickling from your earbuds as it does streaming out of open car windows in the first hot days of spring. That kind of duality implies a certain depth to the music which lends itself to heavy rotation on the playlist. “Third of Life” [...]

Due to some busy times in the current music world and our lives, we've somehow neglected mixes lately here on Knox Road, and we apologize. You, the readers, (well, those who actually take the time to talk to us - thank you!) have spoken. You miss the mix. So I will get them up and going again along with the normal stream of posts. The theme of this mix? As per usual, songs that I enjoy. (P.S. this will have no effect on iTunes Mixeries , which will continue to be sporadically posted. But I get more control with [...]
Portland-based A Weather released a new album called Everyday Balloons earlier this March. The latest record is a hushed-voiced gem, but I'll leave my in-depth thoughts for an upcoming album review. Until then, satiate your A Weather appetite with the following interview. Frontman Aaron Gerber was kind enough to field my highly disjointed questions about the latest record, understated moments, and stuffed animals. IndieMuse: How do you think the overall sound of Everyday Balloons builds on the sound of your previous record Cove? Aaron Gerber: [...]
It's rare that we see an act struggle with deficient live sound because it is too quiet. But despite a rough start mapping the shortcomings of the house sound system, A Weather 's show at P.A.'s Lounge last night was uplifting, mesmerizing and poignant all at once. The Portland, Ore.-based quintet was touring as a trio using freshly hatched live arrangements situated around guitarist Aaron Gerber and drummer Sarah Winchester's murmured harmonies and Mr. Gerber's finger-picked guitar arpeggiation. Its hour-long set passed without any sense that the band was lacking component parts. If anything, playing as a lean, taut [...]

Soft as feathers and graceful as winter’s first snow, A Weather possess a sound of great depth, mystery, and nostalgia. Using hushed, caressing vocals, gentle drums, and interplay between acoustic and electric guitars, the Portland quartet’s sophomore album Everyday Balloons delivers the same intimacy as whispered secrets under a warm blanket. Like a children’s story or hummed lullaby, A Weather lulls listeners into a dream-filled sleep, while simultaneously opening their eyes for the very first time. Share an intimate show with A Weather tonight at P.A.'s Lounge tonight, and download two tracks off [...]

Portland, Ore.-based A Weather are presently waist-deep into their second U.S. tour, which is supporting the release of the slow-core revivalists superlative sophomore set Everyday Balloons [ review here ]. Everyday Balloons seems mildly obsessed with sleep, and the narratives all seem as if they could have been written solely about what can be seen from a bed by a window. The new collection is lusher, denser and even relatively kaleidoscopic compared to the stunning, quieter debut album Cove , which we named one of the best of the last decade right [...]
There's enough great music on the cutting room floor this time around to make a whole nother show. (Yes, I just wrote "whole nother." People say it all the time, way more than "NEW-kye-ler," and yet that's in the dictionary now as an acceptable pronunciation of nuclear. Maybe it should have an apostrophe. "Whole 'nother?" Yeah, that's better.) (artist - song - album + purchase link :: extra info) Aloha - Moonless March - Home Acres Band Of Horses - [...]
