A.A. Bondy's new album, American Hearts , is easily one of my favorites of the year, and it comes just at the right time. Summer's going to fade soon, the leaves will change and Michigan will be at its absolute most beautiful before we get buried in winter. Bondy's sparse folk rock will make a nice soundtrack for that transition, like Springsteen's Nebraska or Will Oldham's Days in the Wake . We continue to find our ears monopolized by folk-singer songwriter types, especially A.A. Bondy's American Hearts record. It's certainly hard to break the mold of this category, but Bondy manages to leave his signature stamp on it with his warm sound and thoughtful lyrics. A.A. Bondy is Scott Bondy, one of the founding members of Alabama's Verbena . If you don't remember Verbena, don't be too hard on yourself. Yes, they did release two major label albums (on Capitol records) and one on Merge Records between 1997 & 2003.
