Aa playing outside an Amtrak station in Austin, TX. Photo by Tod Seelie . Aa have been touring Europe and working on new material to follow up 2007's lovely GAame . They sent this delightful, wintry percussive extravaganza, complete with pulsating organs, pretty xylophone taps and wandering, plucky synths, to RCRD LBL. I am obsessed. Listen below. Aa - "Glow Wreath" Aa on MySpace [ Via RCRD LBL] Just celebrate!

We Were Promised Jetpacks made what has become probably my favourite record of 2009 in "These Four Walls" (yes I know I should do a full review), and to finish the year they are releasing a double A-side "It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning"/ "Ships With Holes Will Sink" which are two of my favourites off a consistently fantastic album. In a year that has been dominated by the resurgence of folk and synth-pop, it is always good to have such undeniably talented indie rockers reminding us of quite how good they can be. It's Thunder [...]

AA - "Society Stinks" (stream only) Softspot music is proud to present its flagship release, a limited reissue of the Essential Entertainment EP by Belgian band AA . Originally released in 1981 by Sexy Robot Records and limited to 900 copies, Essential Entertainment is an unrecognized gem of the early post-punk era. A unique and compelling sense of restless dread and frustration emanates from their stuttering grooves, spiky guitar arpeggios, and disturbed mutter-to-shout vocals. The music is clearly inspired by its peers: Joy Division , [...]
The Eskalators had another Subway Show this past weekend. This time it was an 7 Train-themed singalong (Ozzy's "Crazy Train," Tom Waits's "Downtown Train," the Clash's "Train in Vain," etc) that end... Not to be confused with Brooklyn's Aa, this Belgian quartet played a handful of shows and made a couple of recordings back in the early eighties. AA decided to form a group of their own after seeing a local contest-winning band's concert performance and thinking it was "too traditional". After their two recordings (one being a rehearsal) started getting a little radio play and people started to take notice they broke up, fearful of becoming a real band. So.. thirty years later, the people at Soft Spot Records stumbled across the recordings and decided to re-release the band's [...]

by Doktor Strange It's The Doktor back with another dose of magic for my doksuckers out there! Had a great time meeting all of the nice folks at the AstraZeneca corporate retreat last Sunday. I hope their next pharmaceutical creation fixes their minds! Because they were blown! Doktor Strange has been very upset lately with the news of that Obama character closing down Geronimo Bay in Cuba. I suppose TERRORISTS look out for eash other, though. Doktor Strange met up with a few buddies from high school at Bennigan's this [...]

Killer new 7" reissue of 1981 Fall/Joy Division-inspired Belgians AA , out via Brooklyn's Softspot Music label in a limited edition of 500. The band chose its monicker as such so they could be filed in store bins in front of Abba. They got some brief buzz in the Rough Trade shops; Bush Tetras and Y Pants took some of their 45s back to New York, but the band never really got into cruising altitude playing sporadic gigs here and there. Neat to see this resurface. AA "Hymn of Praise" (MP3) from [...]

Most indie rockers are probably familiar with Aa (aka Big A Little a), a current Brooklyn based band; far fewer are familiar with the similarly named band AA. The post-punk band was birthed in Belgium nearly thirty years ago and had only one release, an EP entitled Essential Entertainment . Only 900 copies were made. These factors have contributed to this release being essentially unknown, so why bring it up now? Softspot Music will be re-releasing AA's Essential Entertainment in a limited edition 7" vinyl of the EP soon. More [...]

I have to admit I didn't really quite like "Miami Ice" by chitown-proggers Icy Demons the first time I heard it. It just didn't grab me, but then the other day, it comes on the ol' ipod and I had take it out of my pocket to find out who it was. Now if you do not like this track right away, I implore you to download it and pop it into you mp3 library, because one day it may just blow your mind. Downloadable: "Miami Ice" (box.net mp3) Streamable: "1850" (baeblemusic [...]
by kevin For Day 3 of CMJ I took my own path, exploring the anti-CMJ faction of this week-long fest. Like all good festivals, sometimes the best shows can be found on the fringes. And no one knows how to master the fringe like Todd P . You should be familiar with Mr. P by now if you live in Brooklyn. He throws every great underground, warehouse, rooftop, outdoor indie-underground show you can think of. At 6 o'clock last night, I left my [...]

As more and more ads appear on HRO i wonder how much he's making now. Couple ads from AA, one from Pedestrian and little ads for more ads to be added. HRO went off on this alt-culture tangent for so long i started to forget it was a music blog, i wonder what Carles' REAL job is, or can he say (since he's making money from it) that he's a blogger and that IS his job? It's true what he says, HRO is a blog worth blogging about. I also have a hunch, Bonds is going [...]
Mount Eerie is at it again folks. The band known for their dark, hard rocking ways have once again put it together on what is quickly becoming a fave around these parts. It rocks hard, it has it's weird lyrics, and it never stops luring me further in. I was a little put off by the track "Don't Smoke", but my personal afflictions have no real place in a pre-review. I've only gone through the album
Drop D is a segment written by QuarterlifeParty friend and freelance writer Ryan Boddy, focusing on bands and music often overlooked in the music blog world. Bands with multiple drummers often acquire labels they don’t want. Words like “drum circle” easily leap to mind when percussion takes the forefront as it does in Brooklyn’s three drummers and a knob twiddler outfit, Aa (pronounced Big A Little A) . Drum circles usually imply a studied lack of rehearsal that results in brief moments of rhythmic coalescence before falling [...]
