The late Michael Jackson's landmark 1982 album Thriller wasn't a collection of songs as much as it was an event that upended the pop landscape, and birthed much of what would come in its wake. But in addition to thinking about it as a direct influence on today's pop stars (i.e. the "I heard 'Billie Jean' and knew that I wanted to make music my life" narrative proffered by so many artists in the wake of his passing), one can also think about how the songs themselves were sampled by musicians who came in Jackson's wake, deconstructed so [...]

Umm, can I just say this? OH MY GOD! When I saw that Confusion posted this last night, I thought I would die. No one should mess with "Are You That Somebody?" - especially not some shameless feminist punk rocking lesbian. But then I said that out loud (the "shameless feminist punk rocking lesbian" part), and decided that it was fuckin' brilliant idea! I'm glad Beth Ditto toned it down for her rendition of what has to be my favorite R&B song of all time. We didn't need her flexing the golden pipes over [...]

So word on the street (web) is that this is an old cover, and one that The Gossip frequently covers during their shows. Ever wonder what it would sound like if an outspoken, overweight, feminist punk lesbian and her band covered Aaliyah and Timbaland's classic? Fucking sick, if you ask me. Above : Beth Ditto & Aaliyah (R.I.P.), who happen to share stylists. Check it out! This cover is from ages ago, but we just came across it the other day and it's divine! Beth Ditto and her boys put their own spin on the Aaliyah and Timbaland classic Are You That Somebody?; we hear they do the tune at a lot at their shows too. You can check out a studio-recording of the cover below, along with a killer Fred Falke remix to their awesome new single Heavy Cross . [...]
We love it. RIP Aaliyah.-.Are.You.That.Somebod y by jahlo

I was DJing in Chicago a few ago and ended up spending the entire weekend there. Chi-town is a dope place for DJs like myself to play & also they got some pretty dope producers and MCs. I don't need to start name dropping Chicago peeps or I'll be here all day making hyperlinks, but what I do need to start doing is introduce this weeks exclusive cuts. Recently the parts for "Juke Dem Hoes" by Mic Terror popped up in my mailbox so you know I had to do sumpting w/ that. I figured I [...]

Hey guys as I mentioned earlier it's my birthday. It's been a great one so far, had brunch, got a birthday wish from Quentin of the Teenagers and am actually about to head out for a few drinks before catching Jack Peñate at Bruar Falls. Anyway, I set aside some time to share this playlist of oldie but goody songs (because I love you). They're completely random, but deal with it...it's my birthday and I do what I want. Note that there is nothing on here from the 00's, enjoy! MP3: The Cure [...]

West Coast digital Hip-hop mutants The Flying Skulls have hit us up with a few rocks of their Club Crack remix bootlegs that are almost as disturbing as they are dope as f**k. To be honest I'd be kinda scared to drop the Spank Rock sampling Club Killer remix out in an actual club, in case it did inspire literal dancefloor murderations, whilst Welsh rhymer Mudmowth [...]

A couple of weeks ago, Oliver did a Top 10 Nostalgic Hip Hop albums , it gave me the idea to do an R&B list. Tonight, he brings the part back to the 80s, I'll take on the 90s then. I usually write about electronica/rock, but I started my listening career in R&B and 80s Pop, Hip-Hop, then started venturing out into other genres as I got older. And now, everything kinda mixes into each other. You have R&B that borrows from Electronica, Hip-Hop that takes from Rock, and vice-versa. A lot of people [...]

Remember when it was really cool to wear oversized airbrushed T's of dead hip hop stars? I kind of still want one. If you like this jam, then hop on over to Quietboy 's myspace and check his mix on Cassie 's Me and You . Aaliyah - Rock the Boat (Quiteboy Rmx) Tagged: Aaliyah, Cassie, Quietboy

Somethin' For the People - "My Love Is the SHHH!" The Dove Shack - "Summertime in the LBC" Aaliyah - "Back and Forth" some classic stuff. ". . . don't stop get it get it."

Originally composed and released by the iconic Isley Brothers (from their 1976 collection Harvest For The World ) before becoming a major radio hit for Aaliyah nearly two decades later (her R. Kelly-handled remix of the tune remains one of the great jeep jams of the 90's), the timeless R&B ballad "(At Your Best) You Are Love" is beautifully brought to life yet again via this gorgeous recording by twee Sweden songbird El Perro del Mar . It's lush R&B sparkle now transformed into a low-key, electro-toned lullaby, [...]

You know when remixes don't really sound like remixes because the remixer has just substituted the original beat for a similar one? Well that's just what Soulbrother Simon doesn't do. He doesn't do himself justice either: "Just a whole load of US Hip-Hop acapellas over UK Hip-Hop beats by me." He takes on Hip Hop artists as diverse as Lil' Wayne and Beastie Boys and he even remixes a Britney Spears track! Erykah Badu , Swizz Beats, M.I.A. [...]

When Cal and I first met Keys and Krates, it was the same night that we saw them live for the first time. While I was able to control myself for the first part of their set, halfway through I had to put away the camera and dance. Well, guess who is back? Keys N Krates returns this Friday to play alongside Free the Robots one of my favorite venues in Toronto, Supermarket. While the majority of people seem focused on the monstrosity that is Decadence, this show will be the best party of my weekend. Adam Tune, their drummer, [...]
