The Bronzed Chorus: Hiding In The Woods from Matt Williams on Vimeo . The Bronzed Chorus continue to pick up steam nationally as well as locally. From Greensboro, NC, they've got that soft sneaky instrumental thing down--think Mogwai--with only a duo set. Their recent release is I'm The Spring from Hello Sir and they're knocking on everyone's door for the next few weeks from the Deep South on. So let The Bronzed Chorus in. [...]

On the beach Agathe (centre) showing Salomé (left) and Chloé how to fly a kite The beach at night A couple of weeks ago, I spent a rather pleasant time on the French coast. I was staying with my friend, Agathe, and her mother, Gisèle, at their holiday home south of Nantes. For the best part of a week, the two ladies took great care of me. Everyday, I had a wonderful [...]

The southeastern college town of Athens, GA, is an important destination for music, with a legacy that's as rich as it is deep and broad. In the late '70s and early '80s, Athens made an indelible mark on the global musical psyche by birthing groundbreaking bands like The B-52s , R.E.M. , Love Tractor , and Pylon , all of whom graced the stage at the famed 40 Watt Club. Despite the success of the aforementioned acts, Athens' diverse community of indie musicians working in various genres have refused to live in the past, and thus [...]

I decided to do something a little experimental this year with my best EP list. When I was comparing very short "full-length" albums to longer albums on my best LP list, I kept wanting to hold the time duration against the shorter album. Also, it seems the difference between EPs and LPs can be a bit arbitrary sometimes, so I decided to just draw a line completely based on album length to split up my best album lists. This list, then, is the best of all albums less than 35 minutes, regardless of what the record is labeled. I'm happy [...]

A.Armada is a band out of Athens, Georgia that specializes in the genre post-rock. I don't normally listen to post-rock despite have some liking towards it but I also have a fear about writing about the genre. I think it's harder to write about the post-rock genre because of the lack of ability in my writing and limited musical background. I'll try my hardest not to bullshit you. I decided to check out A.Armada's Anam Cara after just listening to one track (only one listed on their myspace) and while they were described as being shoegazers by [...]

Castanets I've begun compiling all the albums from this year I have yet to hear, but before I dive into that, I need to address the last few good albums I've already heard. The Castanets ' newest, City Of Refuge , is a weird hodgepodge of electronic bleeps and sounds combined with emotional folk jams. The juxtaposition of seemingly contradictory musical ideas could result in a gimmicky feel in less capable hands, but the original avant-folk record written and recorded by Castanets' Ray Raposa was tweaked with these digital overdubs by such [...]

This week, we're going a little lo-fi. We've got some roughly recorded garage rock from Ty Segall. He's singing the praises of the early days of garage rock, and he's recording it all by himself, it seems. We've also got some trippy, hip hop-influenced electronica from Black Moth Super Rainbow miscreant, Tobacco. For a genre of music that's usually quite rigid, Tobacco brings a warm breathing aesthetic to the world of electronic music on his new LP. We've also got a clip from an interview I recently had with Parts & Labor's Dan Friel, [...]

Written by Fense In music, it is very rare to create something entirely new. To break ground would be to christen a new instrument, one that does something bizarre, one that sounds like no other. Or to use an instrument in a way that has never been done before. Moments like these have spawned great works - my recent viewing and subsequent coverage of Kraftwerk And The Electronic Revolution comes to mind. Another artist along these lines could be Wolf Eyes. Can you [...]
