Sharon Van Etten's follow-up to 2010's Epic — her highly anticipated first release via her new label , Jagjaguwar Records — now has a release date (February 7), title, tracklist, and epic group of indie collaborators. Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock showed off his enviable Portland indie palace recently, but I'm pretty sure the National's Aaron Dessner has him beat — if only for the great music to come from his Brooklyn home/studio. On June 28th, the National are reissuing their 2004 EP Cherry Tree on twin brothers' Bryce and Aaron Dessner's imprint, Brassland . The 10" vinyl is limited to 3,000 copies, 500 of which will be pressed on red wax. As an incentive, the band is offering up "About Today," one of their first truly classic cuts, as a free download via Bandcamp . The National is a band that can seemingly do no wrong. After a few solid, if unheralded albums, the band seemed to hit their stride with "Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers" and refuses to relinquish that crown. Their latest effort, "Boxer," deservingly graced a lot of 2010 year-end lists (it came in at no. 23 on LBYB's Best of 2010 list), and "Think You Can Wait," their addition to the "Win Win" soundtrack is not going to derail their winning streak. High Violet was a wonderful album, not to mention one of the best of 2010, but if you're (always) in the mood for new music from Matt Berninger and the Dessner/Devendorf brothers, help is on the way: The National have written two new original tunes, one for the video game Portal 2 and another as a theme song to the Paul Giamatti-starring film Win Win , which was mentioned among a preview of music-related Sundance films earlier in the year. Everyone else's favourite track off of The National most recent and excellent album "High Violet" gets the video treatment. On first watch it may not make much sense, it's a little bit out there and flits and skites between various frantic images, but it's not just using the image of the US president (played here by Kristen Schaal from Flight Of The Conchords fame) for no reason, there are some political undertones (assassinations, Russian Black Bear, someone bending over backwards for the prez, references to George W).
