Abandoned Pools , the solo venture of songwriter/producer/multi-inst rumentalist Tommy Walter, have signed to Seattle-based Tooth & Nail Records . The label will release the L.A. native's third album "Sublime Currency" later this year. Walter, an original member of the Eels, released two albums in first half of last decade on two different labels — 20012s "Humanistic" helped Abandoned Pools gain a loyal cult following (though Extasy Records dissolved not long after its release), and "Armed to the Teeth" followed in 2005 on Universal. Since, Walter has written for film and television, worked in production and collaborated in [...]

Fans who thought Abandoned Pools didn't get their due with two albums in the early part of last decade were delighted when Tommy Walter rebooted his project last year . Now the former Eels bassist is plowing ahead with new material for an album titled "Sublime Currency" (no release date scheduled yet). The chiming new single "In Silence," with its sugary melody and swirling synth, will appeal to those who liked the poppier stuff on 20012s "Humanistic" and 20052s "Armed to the Teeth." And speaking of "Humanistic," to mark the 10-year anniversary of that album's [...]

Like the webcasts from the Natural History Museum's First Fridays events, they will be carried through Stickam.com, specifically this link . It might just be that we are more aware of it than previous summers, but it seems like there are more solo debuts from band members of alternative and indie rock bands. One of the most anticipated is Phil Selway's (Radiohead) upcoming release, Familial, due to drop August 30th. Selway collaborated with singer/songwriter Lisa Germano, ex-Soul [...] Related posts:This Week's New Releases: Real Estate, Them Crooked Vultures, Arctic Monkeys, Mark Matos & Os Beaches & More Halloween Indie Rock Songs, Vol. IX: Them Crooked Vultures, Mae Shi, M83, Magnetic Fields, The Kinks & More Songs About The Moon [...]
Back in college I had my own devices for exploring and discovering new music, certain methods of which are not altogether unlike how I do the very same thing today. One of the many methods of exploration was my college's radio station for which one of my friends happened to DJ. I picked up a [...]

A few years ago, if you would have asked me to name everything I knew about the band Abandoned Pools, I could have told you exactly two things: 1) they play that song The Remedy and 2) the music video for said song features a super-hot chick bassist . Yep, pretty thorough knowledge if I do say so myself. Fortunately a friend of mine gave me a proper introduction to the band (which, it turns out, is really just one dude named Tommy Walter), and I haven't looked back since. Really, the previous two Abandoned Pools [...]

Even with frontman Tommy Walter [pictured at top] a bit under the weather, Abandoned Pools' comeback show on Tuesday night at Spaceland was strong. The L.A. quartet, playing live for the first time in five years, sprinkled in some new material with songs from their 2001 and 2005 albums, highlighting a Buzz Bands LA-hosted evening of diverse music. Chasing Kings' nervy indie-pop kicked off the night, before rock quintet Vanaprasta came on with its stadium-sized licks (not to mention singer Steven Wilkin's arena-sized beard). After Abandoned Pools' headlining set, Judson & Mary [...]

If Tommy Walter didn't have bad luck ... well, he wouldn't have those hard-luck stories he can tell about his first two albums. Walter, in his nom de tune Abandoned Pools , released two fine albums last decade. "Humanistic" came out in 2001, just before Extasy Records went belly-up. "Armed to the Teeth" followed in 2005, only to be hung out to dry after Universal was not rewarded with a radio hit. Walter went on to collaborate in Glacier Hiking and Oliver the Penguin , work in production and write for film and TV. [...]

Abandoned Pools — the musical vehicle of Tommy Walter (an original member of Eels ) — return from a five-year hiatus to headline "A Night With Buzz Bands LA" on Tuesday, June 15, at Spaceland. Opening the evening will be up-and-coming indie-pop wizards Chasing Kings , followed by the tightly wound guitar rock of L.A. quintet Vanaprasta . Watch for an announcement of the special guests who will play the midnight set. Abandoned Pools released major-label albums in 2001 and 2005, before Walter moved on to other projects, [...]

Oliver the Penguin is not so much a band, or an album. It's a persona — a character that sprung from the minds of musician-about-town Tommy Walter and singer-songwriter-composer Rie Sinclair . If the duo has their way, Oliver the Penguin won't just be an album that they plan to release in March, it will be an animated television show. It's just that the soundtrack is done ahead of time. And nifty music it is. "Oliver the Penguin" is nimble electropop that relies on volleys of playful beats from Walter and airy vocals from [...]
It never ceases to astound me of the most random places that I can find good, good music. I mean, once I even found this awesome track on some random porn site... but that can wait for another post.
