Something in me wanted to discount this, to write it off as another solid, but ultimately middling fuzzy psych-garage effort that has congested and bogged down the Atlanta scene for most of the latter part of this young century. And to some extent, that's what Abby Gogo has delivered here. It's nothing we haven't heard before. Opening cut "Louder Than Dreams," while undoubtedly catchy, carries no defining traits. Abby Go Go release their self-titled, debut full length November 30th, and if you enjoy psychedelic, shoegazey rock, you'll definitely want to pick this up. Most of the record extracts poppy garage-rock riffs and elongates them into effect laden, four-to-seven-minute compositions of indulgence. The two shorter, more conventional garagey tracks are less interesting, but in context they help pace the album. With this release, Abby Go Go have definitely established themselves as one of the best in the massive army of Black Lips/Deerhunter descendant bands in Atlanta. Abby Gogo have got a definite 60s lilt to their garage guitars. Taken from there forthcoming self titled debut album (released on November 30 through Double Phantom Records), this free download of 'Louder Than Dreams' underlines that sound. The melodies are there, as is the basic pop structure on this Abby Gogo track. But there's also a sense that there's something murkier lurking behind the swaying guitars and the 'hey hey hey' lyrics.
