Leeds quintet The ABC Club earned some love from NME, a blessing in disguise for many promising bands. Their new EP White Lies sounds sad, sweet and dark, with falsetto vocals and guitar licks lifted from the Pulp and Blur songbooks. Whitby is the stand-out track, an acoustic love song about this small seaside town in North Yorkshire. Title track White Lies sounds a lot like The Smiths, albeit with less pathos and a muffled drum sound. Whitby by The ABC Club [...]

The idea of their being a specific Manchester 'scene' has always been one that has thoroughly depressed me - the thought that all bands from this city share the same love of Oasis, The Smith and Factory does nothing to light the imagination, the belief that somewhere there's a production line of middling indie bands makes me feel sick with dread. The truth is that there is that side to the city, an echo chamber of glories long since faded that people seem desperate to revive, but it's such a small fraction of the larger picture that it's easy to [...]

http://www.theabcclub.co.uk/ / Facebook The ABC Club are from Leeds, a five piece who make some rather enjoyable 'proper' indie-pop music, whilst some people think NME might have helped pioneer the downfall of guitar music by heralding fodder such as Brother (Viva) and giving Pete Doherty, Liam Gallagher and co complete support despite them surfing up unlistenable shit time after time. It does however, still have some good reviewers and plenty of people with their ears to the ground capable of find a decent band or two (even ones with guitars). [...]

You may have heard us discuss the (in-)famous 'Recommender Queue' on here before. For the uninitiated, it's basically the long line of drafted posts that we create when we discover new artists that we'd like to cover. Once someone floats onto our radars we immediately open up a new draft post and tip in any information and links that we can quickly locate about the artist. Then they sit there until it's time for us to write up and edit the full post, with photos, videos, SoundClouds and the rest. We are known to be a selectively picky [...]

Here we go, a mixtape of some of my favourite artists and songs of 2010 so far. Posting has been rather sporadic on here as per usual, but I think we have more than made up for that with this (and the other two that are in the works). We've got summery indie pop all the way through to some thundering and swaggering rock and roll - but I can't try and take all the credit for finding these - at least a couple were spotted by the fine folks over at The 405 - so hat tip [...]

And we're back... First of all, let me say thanks to everyone who came to the very first Noctambule, the event was a huge success and it looks like we'll be doing it again next week so stay tuned. Thanks to all the press people that showed love, thanks to the Jets players who showed and wish to remain anonymous, thanks to all my music friends, I love all of you all and it was a pleasure meeting all the new faces, let's hang out soon. The Chainsmokers killed it. I was in recovery mode most of yesterday [...]
There must be something in the water up in Leeds as the city seems to keep churning out excellent band after excellent band. The ABC Club are the latest of these bands, and there is something special here. Riding on a kind of nostalgia for the early part of the last decade, we have a sound that is closer to The Strokes than anything, and that's just fine. There's nothing groundbreakingly new, but that will probably do them well. This is the kind of thing I can certainly see being "the next big thing" assuming everything goes right [...]

A short while ago we posted about the ABC Club and their excellent debut single Thieving Magpie which came out on the Things To Make And Do label on Monday. Hailing from Leeds, the 5-piece band is fronted by the understated vocals of Zandra Klievens, set against circling, jangly guitars. Influences are happily drawn from UK indie legends The Smiths (especially vocal style) and US indie legends The Strokes . Thankfully they have enough punchy, taut rhythms and original vocal chops to demonstrate clear talent [...]

...and we're back in business with another fantastic prospect for the months to come in the form of a 5-piece from Leeds by the name of The ABC Club . Thieving Magpie will be the 6th release from the brilliantly bedroom based Things To Make And Do Records and offers a sound that is reminiscent of the new wave first album by The Strokes with tight drums and taut rhythmic guitars, whilst at the same time loose and easy vocals poured into each tune by singer Zandra Klievens. You can stream both Thieving Magpie and [...]
#1. The ABC Club File Next To - The Strokes, Little Joy, In the same way their name takes the basics of education, The ABC Club take all the basic guitar pop elements and mould them down into an easygoing and quite clearly Strokes inspired collection of tracks. With crunchy guitar tones, punchy bass and incessant swirls of luxurious overdrive to lead, the dreary twee female vocal completes their youthful and [...]

We've been encouraged by just how many excellent new UK bands we are discovering over the past few weeks - yesterday was Planet Earth , previously the Sunderbans , before that Detroit Social Club and Chapel Club , and now we have a third club to join the well, club - it is The ABC Club . We've been listening to their stuff on MySpace for a little while since we were [...]
