Even tho Peter Murphy is apparently a hit-and-run driving meth-head , a kind judge has allowed his "35 Years of Bauhaus" tour to proceed as planned. But will any version of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" be any better then the free download parody found on the site dedicated to monitoring the mortality of eternally-elderly actor Abe Vigoda? "Abe Vigoda's Dead (Premortem Mix)" can be downloaded from abevigoda.com . If Murphy needs an opening act, I recommend the death-country band [...]

The Cargo Culte lay in a collection of mixes that BaddBob and I began sharing in the late fall and winter of 2008. A few scant months after the banking meltdown I found myself back in Los Angeles after eight years of wandering, living off of unemployment. BaddBob a behind the scenes guy in television [...]

Oren Lyons , the soon-to-break out orchestral rock band from Los Angeles, is changing its name after hearing complaints from representatives of the real Oren Lyons , an 82-year-old Native American leader. The Silver Lake-based septet has decided to call itself Kan Wakan, which is Lakota for "sundance." The name comes a mutual interest in Native American lore on the part of band members Gueorgui Linev and Christianne Bautista, Linev said today. It's not the first time a prominent person has beefed about a rock band appropriating a name, but the L.A. musicians thought they [...]

If you happen to be Best Coast, then the only place to launch your tour would be in Los Angeles at the Wiltern Theater. Throngs of adoring fans cheered throughout her 24-song set that included some guest spots by Jon Brion, who produced her latest album . Openers, JEFF The Brotherhood ripped through their set with fuzz-drenched guitars and rollicking drum fills. Local favorites Abe Vigoda also provided support. The Silverlake Jubilee band schedule is here. Last year’s lineup was pretty average so I ended up passing on it, but the first year was so much fun and featured an incredible stable of L.A. acts. This year might be the best so far with bands like Autolux, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Abe Vigoda, The Soft Pack and more scheduled to play on Memorial Day weekend. Dublab DJs (Is there a more overlooked collection of DJs in the country?) will be playing as well. Same place, same time. Oh, and they have a killer beer garden. [...]

When I was 15, I saw a curious looking Coachella DVD in the music documentary section at Best Buy, and bought it on a whim. It turned out to be a collection of select performances from the festival's recent years. It introduced me to the concept of the contemporary music festival. Watching awe-inspiring sets from the Pixies, Radiohead, and Arcade Fire back then made me long for this mystical festival destination for the ensuing years. What could be better than a music festival in the California desert, surrounded by swaying palm trees and gorgeous sunsets? As an East [...]

Who: Abe Vigoda in the Gobi Tent In 3 or Fewer Words: Work in progress. Forgettable Because: Even four albums in, these products of the L.A. underground still haven't found anything that breaks them out of insular cools-kids-making-music-for-ot her-cool-kids bubble. Which is not to say the quartet won't, because as their lunch hour set for Coachella early birds showed, they are viciously good players who weave all sorts of rhythmic intricacies into their Cure-in-a-blender sound. Singer Michael Vidal's sufficiently anguished vocals cut through it all nicely, and if the music was [...]

Your Saturday menu: ► The Wedding Present , whose older repertoire still makes us nostalgically swoon , headlines the Troubadour in support of their new album "Valentina." [ Download "You Jane" here. ] Tokyo's Pinky Piglets support. ► USC's charity concert Derby Days returns with a lineup featuring Theophilus London , Bag Raiders and American Royalty . ► RT N' the 442s , the Silver Chords , Spindrift , He's My Brother She's My Sister , Restavrant , [...]
Your Oscar-night music agenda: ► Nineties indie-rock provocateurs Archers of Loaf are back, with a remastered, deluxe version of 19952s "Vee Vee" just out on Merge and similar editions of "All the Nation's Airports" and "White Trash Heroes" due later this year. Dipping into the Chapel Hill quartet's vaults has yielded (previously only VHS) videos such as the one for "Underachievers March and Fight Song," above. And you can get a download of the remastered "Harnessed in Slums" here . Archers of Loaf play the Troubadour tonight, along with indie-pop trio Hospitality [...]

I'd been hearing about it for years, the return of '80s sounds to popular music, but due to my relative disconnect from new music, it took a while to hear it for myself. But, well, it's definitely there (Which I'm sure you already know). And you know what? I don't mind in the slightest. Essentially the vibe I get is that a bunch of people took the good sounds/tones/effects from the mainstream '80s and left behind all the cheesiness while applying them to interesting, late '80s early '90s alternative rock songwriting, with a dash of thoroughly [...]
