Times New Viking/Abe Vigoda :: @ The Smell - June 16, 2008 - DTLA Sometimes you have to see a band live for them to truly make sense. The blown cones and tinny treble of Times New Viking's Matador debut, Rip it Off, brings new meaning to the term "lo-fi." The album is so [...]
So I downloaded a couple tracks from "tropical" punks Abe Vigoda's myspace page , but when I went to doublecheck them ye olde myspace decided it wanted to enter some sort of infinite connecting loop. That damn media player just would not connect. See... Anyway, you should probably listen to this. Downloadables: "Calypso" (box.net mp3) "All Nite and Day (Remix)" (box.net mp3) Abe's life blog is here . Post Present Medium page is here . [...]

The title of the lead-off track from LA-based Abe Vigoda 's debut album Skeleton is rather misleading. The lyrics on "Dead City/Waste Wilderness" fit, but the music is what you might call...tropical. Highly colorful and intense with flamboyant percussion and mumbled harmonies, it's perfect music for a drunken walk on the beach. The rest of the album shares a loose, DIY aesthetic similar to their Smell brethren No Age . However, Skeleton has it's own sound with a trippy, prog-like edge. It's as if HEALTH and Animal Collective merged as one [...]
Hello readers, the football was good last night wasn't it? I'm bored of it already. Though by the time the Euro championships pop round I will be in desperate need of some soccer. In the mean time let's go meet a new band eh? Abe Vigoda are from LA and part of it's happening Smell scene which features amongst others Mika Miko, The Mae Shi, Barr & No Age. The band claim to be playing some sort of 'tropical/pop/punk' which actually is not all that far from the truth. [...]
I can't remember when is the last time I bought a 7'' by an UK indie-rock band, I swear, I don't remember when, but I have thought a lot about the why*. Perhaps it is that the dynamics of the music industry in this country where so-called indie (aka indie schmindie) ...

I first stumbled across Los Angeles tropical punk outfit, Abe Vigoda , while checking out Brooklyn faves High Places' West Coast tour dates. I was initially intrigued by the quartet's peculiar moniker, taken from the " late " Abe Vigoda, the American actor who's been "reported dead as many times as he's been reported alive." However quirky the name, it soon became irrelevant after soaking up the group's recorded material and checking out some of their live vids . Abe Vigoda comes from the same experimental downtown LA [...]
You know we love indie, we are always complaining about indie schmindie this, and indie dance remixes that but then we are being lazy and incorrect with our terminology, you know that what we slate, that indie, is not really indie but revivalist fashion driven corporate Middle of the Road ...

[MP3] No Age - Boy Void [MP3] No Age - Everybody's Down Sure, Everyone's talking about how No Age and a bevy of amazing bands from The Smell scene are starting to get some major exposure these days. If you happened to make it down to any of The Smell 10 Year Anniversary Shows this past week you know what I'm talking about. Funny thing is very few Los Angeles music blogs seem to be [...]

While you may be thinking that we're referring to the actor who's been reported dead almost as many times as he's been reported as alive, well, we're not. Instead, we're talking about a group of kids from LA who weren't even born yet when the real Vigoda was first reported as maybe being deceased . Also, just as a sidenote, the real Abe Vigoda was in "North" , so, clearly, he must have been dead at that point. Born out of the same downtown Los Angeles scene as groups like [...]
Did the warmth of the sun reinvigorate this week or what? It kind of felt like a desert or a dessert depending on if you like things sweaty or sweety. And sweetly sweaty was how this week went. Like how good was The Smell last night? So good we had to do this and this (or this). As for the boys in Totally Radd!!, you should never have to apologize for equipment failures. You're Totally Radd!!,

WARNING: The music in the post below may be annoying to your S.O. (significant other). Please use it wisely. Anywho, here's two new new new Abe Vigoda mp3s. This caps of an infamous week. OiNk is no more. (I was going to "honor" the site by going dark this week but then thought better of it and would know the record companies have won so screw that idea.) Work… Heather has been out of the country. It's been interesting to say the least. Oh well, one more week in OC and then it's off to Ann Arbor to see Heather and then to Chicago for [...]
Here's this week's installment of Song Obsessions from a great blog called I Pick My Nose . Make sure to check out his studio session with John Vanderslice . Adrian : John Vanderslice - Numbered Lithograph With him coming down do an in-studio with me this week, there was a lot of listening to Vanderslice's new album, both because it was new, good and exciting and for "preparation". I was liking the shear weirdness of the sounds on this one anyway, but he also played it [...]
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): (mp3) ( buy ) [...]
