Ben Sollee, from press kit One of my favorite musicians, Ben Sollee , will be coming by the station on May 10 at 1 p.m. for an in-studio performance and interview before his show at Kings Barcade (Cat's Cradle Presents). Sollee's music is inspired by his Kentucky roots, but spans genres from folk to jazz, carried by his syncopated rhythms and smooth voice. You may recognize Ben Sollee from his work with Daniel Martin Moore on Dear Companion , an album [...]

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant with Hossam Ramzy's Egyptian Ensemble : Nobody's Fault But Mine [ purchase ] Abigail Washburn : Nobody's Fault But Mine [ purchase ] Here are two very different versions of the same song, each of which qualifies in a different way for our Unusual Instruments theme. Nobody's Fault But Mine is a gospel blues song that can be traced back to at least 1924, when Blind Willie Johnson recorded it. [...]
It's safe to say that of all the ambassadors for old-time music - from Bill Monroe to Pete Seeger to Ralph Stanley - Abigail Washburn has had, through her passion for and knowledge of China, the ... Continue reading "Abigail Washburn on Earl Scruggs and Getting Into an Old-Time Trance in China" >

Over the last 14 years, Pickathon Music Festival has grown into a premiere summer destination for music lovers and performers alike. Zale Schoenborn started the scrappy festival with his wife, family, and some friends, and a continued family-run mentality has kept it a unique experience. Situated on Pendarvis Farm outside of Portland, OR, Pickathon's five core organizers have designed unparalleled sustainability efforts and a community atmosphere that has musicians and fans returning year after year. With another indie-all star lineup, neigh perfected greening practices, and their projected first-ever sell-out, this year might be the festival's finest yet. [...]

On Saturday night, San Francisco was treated to a second show by The Jayhawks at the Fillmore, with Abigail Washburn as the opening act.

Now that alt-country O.G.s The Jayhawks have dropped their first record with their original lineup in 16 years, last year's Mockingbird Time , they've finally got something new to tour behind. Sure, Mark Olson and crew have been on the road together for some time now, but a little new never hurt anyone. The tour will kick off on January 26th with two dates in Colorado, both with support from Justin Townes Earle. Abigail Washburn and Kai Welch will join the band for the rest of the U.S. [...]
There's so much to love and admire about this amazing video it's hard to know where to start. Filmed at an abandoned office building in Lower Manhattan, singer, songwriter and accomplished claw hammer banjo player Abigail Washburn is surrounded by a bevy of NY string players (all adorned in winter wear) and stripped Americana folk meets chamber music. The production from Mason Jar Music is superb and the playing is inspired and goose-bump-raising (get the headphones out for this one). Artists who post crappy sounding, cell-phone-shot videos on their sites, take note: this is [...]

Abigail Washburn - Burn Thru
405 writer Ross Haymes caught up with Abigail Washburn before her gig at Cargo in London (28th July 2011) to talk to us about how she got into the music industry, her relationship with China, creating a new genre of music, touring the world, bluegrass, Nashville and a load more. City of Refuge by Abigail Washburn is out now through Rounder (Decca) .
San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival will once again provide broke festival fanatics with one last chance for a weekend full of music before the harsh reality of winter sets in. Set for September 30 - October 2 at Golden Gate Park, this year's edition offers Robert Plant & the Band of Joy, Bright Eyes, Bob Mould, Broken Social Scene, and Buckethead for the price of your attendance - aka, it's free. Other notable acts include John Prine, Bill Kirchen, Gomez, DeVotchKa, Gillian Welch, Dr. John & the [...]

I grew up ... but first I had to be born. I was born on the welcome mat of the Saint Francis hospital in Evanston, IL. Dad tells the story that Mom thought she had to go to the bathroom and while she was sitting on the toilet my head started to pop out. Dad threw her in the back of the station wagon and drove one block to the closet hospital. Dad threw her in the back of the station wagon and drove one block to the closest hospital. Mom got our of the car and laid down directly [...]

Oh, Bonnaroo . You do it to us every time. Year by year, over 80,000 people make the pilgrimage to a field in the middle of nowhere, Tennessee to camp for four days in the blistering heat with little to no refuge and more dust than anyone should be able to handle. That sounds kinda miserable, right? How then, you might ask, did Bonnaroo make it to this, their 10th year? I think that can be summed up in their newfound theme song, by the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, "Bonnaroo (Feel the Magic)". [...]

By Jon Stone I've been thinking about late-night sets all day. Bonnaroo is famous for them, but seriously, I don't see how people manage. Like tonight, there's some really cool stuff going on at, like, two and three in the morning. I'm convinced that only the very young, the completely wasted, and those who can sleep somewhere with air conditioning stay out all night. Which is really too bad. I would have loved to see Ratatat last night but they went on at three. On the other hand, Weezy had us all up that late anyway. [...]

Abigail Washburn is heading to Bonnaroo this year, but not before stopping by Grimey's on Tuesday for a quick performance. The banjo-plucking songstress, known for her Americana folk craft and occasionally singing in Mandarin, is celebrating the release of her second album, City of Refuge , on vinyl. Show's at 6 p.m.
It's time for The Wounded Jukebox to introduce the Best Songs of 2011 (So Far). Eventually, our whole staff will be sharing the songs that captured their hearts and minds, but I'll be starting things off with my favorite 15. I'm not going to lie, it's a weird list, full of songs that I would [...]
