If you're looking for some seething, heart-on-sleeve scuzzy stuff whilst struggling for grip on the speeding coattails of Yuck, cling on tightly to Wet Paint , as they conjure a similarly melodic sonic barrage that's intermittently concealed away within visceral vocal drawl and agitated feedback howling. The whippersnapping, rip-roaring Uptight Casuals is all but devoid of era categorisation, bubblegum chorus sticking to quintessential grunge lyrics of being brought down and written off, like Nine Black Alps enticing J. Mascis with Chupa Chups round the back of the Garage (maybe), whilst the acoustic amble of Aim Low succinctly epitomises both [...]
Dan Michaelson & The Coastguards - Love Lends A Hand by musicmule
This week we've been back to the seaside and played pool for the first time in years. We've run training sessions and had groundhog day meetings, we've attended a civilised parent's evening, and we've even managed three visits to the pub in a week...and suffered a corking hangover in return. We've watched Control on DVD, and been reminded just how good Joy Division were. It is a excellent film and

tradehook's resident blogger, absentees, and his loyal companion, agym, are currently working on some technical difficulties hence no recent mixtapes. They hope to bring some new mixes as soon as some things are sorted. I never blogged this most recent mixtape when we finished it, so may as well throw it in now. absentees vs. agym mixtape ver. 2.0: http://www.mediafire.com/?mmjb 4dyyqth tracklist: Intro Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Deadmau5 Remix) [...]
The fortunes of the musical 'side project' have on the whole been somewhat mixed. For every Raconteurs there's a Mike and the Mechanics; for every Damon Albarn, an Alex James. (You might remember English football shout-a-long 'Vindaloo', but Fat Les's follow-up single, 'Naughty Christmas (Goblin In The Office)', never hit quite the same heights.) Dan Michaelson is usually the frontman of London band Absentee . On this album, however, he has done the time-honoured thing by gathering around him a coterie of other musicians – including members of the Magic Numbers, Rumble Strips and Fields – and going [...]

Absentee is a band that I have a somewhat bittersweet relationship with. I enjoy their more upbeat sounding numbers, but struggle a little with the more dirge like material. The one thing that always maintains my interest though is the voice of singer Dan Michaelson. Sounding world weary far beyond his years, his vocals add a sense of gravitas to the proceedings that cover up almost any other weaknesses. I suspect I could actually listen to him recite the phone directory and enjoy it. So I was slightly hesitant to listen to Dan Michaelson [...]
Late Sunday afternoon here, dinner to cook & my weight record deck to dig out so's I can rip some unavailable vinyl - The best version of Put a Spell on You ever, ever (for my ears, anyhow). Yep it's Screamin' Jay - but doing it justice, with a very famous guitarist; more later, hopefully. For now, you may enjoy these as much as I do. ♫ Sunday Sounds - Apples in Stereo New Magnetic Wonder (2007) buy | myspace ♫ Shot [...]
Another not-so-notable release week. I know it's not that exciting when the two releases I'm looking forward to most are from a classical composer ( Johann Johannsson ) and a split EP with two artists I don't own anything by ( Thursday / Envy ). My guess is people don't want to drop an album on an election day. Can't blame them. It probably explains the huge release weeks we've had through the fall up until now, too. I'll also be checking out Black Moth Super Rainbow , Travis , [...]
A couple of weeks ago, the forward-thinking Jason from The Pop Cop emailed IGIF and about fifteen other blogs around the world seeking their participation in what he called a way to "introduce your favourite music to a worldwide audience [that] would show the strength of the music blogging community in a way that has never been done before." Hyperbole aside, his idea was simple: have a collection of music blogs around the world choose one song from a band from their countries which would then be collected and posted on each blog. [...]

Written by Fense No no no no no. This isn't doing it for me. With vocals rivaling Calvin Johnson in pitch, and dubbing themselves indie-pop, there's an obvious Beat Happening reference here. But where other artists succeed at setting themselves apart from their influences, and do so well, I'm not quite hearing it in The Absentee ( MySpace )-at least, not at first. It's not until the final minute of "Shared", the opening track to Victory Shorts , that the song becomes anything [...]
Jason from the blog The Pop Cop came up with a pretty interesting idea. He proposed that some of the blogs that focus on a singe country's musical output do a post together once a month featuring the best music from each country. Swedesplease was chosen to represent Sweden. This is a work in progress and the format will probably change over time. Hopefully soon we'll have one central site to send you to for each month's archives. But for now here are the picks from October (download them all here [...]
A monthly feature where music bloggers across the world share a track from their home country which they are excited about. We have 12 countries represented in all right now. MAP will appear here on the 15th of each month. It was all Jason's idea so we collectively thank him for organising it. On the same day, each other represented country will simultaneously post this list on their blog. So America, Argentina, Australia, Denmark, England, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Peru, Scotland, Spain and Sweden - What's in your ears? [...]

The Absentee love continues right here, courtesy of an amusing cover I acquired yesterday courtesy of the good people at Pure Groove . The first shock is the huge difference in expected vocal pitch, and the silliness continues from there. And yes it is that I Want to Break Free . mp3: Absentee - I Want To Break Free Absentee myspace / website . Loads more free download goodness from Pure Groove .
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 A month ago I got an email from a fellow blogger recommending some sort of music exchange program. The idea is this: get a few country specific blogs (such as this one you're reading) and get them to upload [...]

Here's something different today. A while back, I got a message from Jason who runs Scottish music blog The Pop Cop . His plan was to form a sort of worldwide alliance of blogs which each month would post songs from their country, and so, after a bit of prompting we have the Music Alliance Pact. It's actually been quite a good way for me to listen to artists from other countries, which is something that I'm often quite rubbish at (apart from North American acts naturally). There's some good stuff [...]
When The Pop Cop launched in a blizzard of buy-one-get-one-free fireworks and 17 frowning pipers marching down our pot-holed neighbourhood, we deliberately made this website a platform to showcase Scotland's music scene. In a way, though, we are preaching to a willing and predominantly good-looking audience. You love Scottish music. You want to hear more of it. So the question we asked ourselves was this: How could we force this nation's mighty tunes down the ears of those who didn't want it, need it or even give a toss about it? Then [...]

Blitzen Trapper are quickly becoming one of my favourite bands and they put on a brilliant show last night in Whelans. Sure, it was sparsely attended but they didn't put any less effort into it and played a great hour long set, with the majority of the material coming from their newest album Furr , which is fantastic. They're well versed in classic American music, and much like Dr. Dog, adapt all these different styles into their own mix. The album jumps from folk to country to hard rock and the live show is much the same. They have [...]
