Here's a single entitled "Fresh Rhymes & Videotape Anthem," from Decon's upcoming project, it features Evidence, The Alchemist, Aceyalone, Rakaa & 88-Keys as another feature and producer. Here is what Decon has to say about the project: "Fresh Rhymes & Videotape, Vol. 13 is part of a new series of audio/visual centric releases from Decon. The Digital & Physical projects combine 6-10 new tracks with conceptual video integration from some of today's most promising up and coming as well as established artists. Coming October 14th! Stay tuned for more of these [...]
I like finding that amount of drama that goes into the mix. It doesn't go necessarily into how I compose it; it goes into how I mix it. So the process is more what comes in that final two-track stereo mix than in how I edit it together. So like with the Delia and Gavin thing, the drama is in the filter changes and the resonance changes, it just kind of goes like you're going up in a roller coaster, and then you get to that point and you go down and it's like that big Moog sound kind of [...]
I'm finally in the routine of running again. My single favorite part about running is getting to focus on the quality tunes blasting through my iPod, powering me through those 30 minutes on the treadmill (hey, it's 105+ out there, gotta go with the treadmill). Nice moment today, courtesy of this tune from Aceyalone's great album, Lightning Strikes . Do check it out. And add it to your playlist, just like I added it to my special "Run Motherf**er Run" playlist. Hop to it! Aceyalone - Sound [...]
Thanks to all who listened! Full playlist below. Back to indie rock next week! Alas, the recording of shows was turned off for Spring Break -- and evidently not turned back on now. Unaware of this as I was, I have no archive recording for this week. RJD2 - Since We Last Spoke (from Since We Last Spoke ) RJD2 - Ghostwriter (from Deadringer ) A Tribe Called Quest - Excursions (from The Low End Theory ) A Tribe Called Quest - Vibes And Stuff (from The Low End Theory [...]

Image credit: Simon Grossi In the previous part I explained how once more flipping through my pre-2002 hip-hop albums led me to more or less rediscover the genre again. I decided to make a two-post mix of some of the tracks that still sound remarkably fresh to me today. This second playlist preserves the overall vibe of the previous one, but differs by being less jazz and turntablism oriented and instead focuses more on the MCs and their delivery and rhymes. I admit, I cheated with this playlist by including [...]
We were away for part of this week so we missed some things, but did manage to visit the Echo last night for Mezzanine Owls' 7" release show out now through JAXART. It was a great night. And great nights usually spawn great reviews and the presence of great attendees (members of Colorforms, B.R.A.M., Henry Clay, The Front/The Useless Keys, Correatown, Charlie Wadhams, Electrocute, and bloggers

Here I go with my hip-hop loving ways again. This time it is Aceyalone's latest, Lighting Strikes . Some people may know him from his album with RJD2 , Magnificent City . The result of that album was somewhat uneven, sometimes having to with incompatibility between Ace's flow and RJ's beats. This time around, Aceyalone has found a producer ( Bionik ) that fits with his style, and the result is a solid disc of energetic, jungle-influenced hip-hop. Rather than the jumps in [...]

Aceyalone is no secret to the underground / "intelligent" hip-hop scene, but I never took the time to really jump into his stuff. My mistake. One of the reasons I've shied away from hip-hop over the last decade is due to the mainstream "money and bitches" formula that has overwhelmed the airwaves and media. Eminem may be a genius. 50 Cent and Kanye continue to fight it out. But something about all of it has by and large turned me off. I should have kept my ear to the pulse of the underground, because I've clearly been missing out [...]

Aceyalone , one of the most underrated voices in hip-hop, is about to release his newest album Lightning Strikes , a dancehall inspired album. His last album, Magnificent City was entirely produced by RJD2 , this his 8th(?) album is entirely produced by Bionik, "who's known for crafting dub, dancehall, and reggae inspired tracks". The first single features someone who I have noticed has been "featured" a lot lately, Chali 2na, formerly of J5. Aceyalone - Easy feat Chali 2na Aceyalone - [...]

At this point, I think Chali 2na has surpassed Q-Tip in his prime as the go-to cameo rapper. The former Jurassic 5 baritone – named one of the top 10 underrated rappers by Passion of the Weiss – shows up here with Aceyalone , who is set to release his new full-length Lightning Strikes ( Decon ) on Oct. 2. If I find the time, I might have to put together a Chali 2na mix similar to the one I did with Q-Tip ( Side A and Side B ). [...]

Freestyle Fellowship are rappers Aceyalone , Mikah Nine , P.E.A.C.E. and Self Jupiter, and sometimes extended to include producer J. Sumbi. This collection of people came together in 87 or 88 at the Good Life Cafe in Leimert Park, California. Leimert Park is a center of black culture inside Los Angeles (think, similar to Harlem in N.Y.) and a place where creative people come together, and Freestyle Fellowship is a prime example of that. Freestyle Fellowship in the 80's started as very large loose collection of Good Life regulars, but was [...]
It’s been a while since the last Disco Pogo post, so here’s volume 9. Another cracker. There’s not a duff track on the CD, but I’ve managed to select six for your listening pleasure. We have James Yorkston providing guest vocals to thy Psychonauts’ nice slice of electro-folk and Calexico getting their Woven Birds given a suitably downbeat rub-down by Stratus. Elsewhere on remix action we have

Most of my posts are way overdue, but this one really should’ve been put up a long time ago. Not because I’m putting up any fairly recent material, but just because this artist really deserves a mention since we love talking about emceeing and mic skills on this site. I'm talking about Aceyalone, a West Coast backpacker favorite, and a founding member of the seminal LA underground group Freestyle Fellowship. To me, what makes Acey stand out is not his flow, but his lyrics. [...]
