Acrylics are popping up all over Brooklyn right now. The fivesome are currently recording their debut long-player right now, a release whose psychedelic bike ride jams have yet to officially find a label home. We spent an afternoon with them in founding duo Molly and Jason's backyard, a mess of vines, knives and beer bottles not unlike the pop scene that's at the core of "Summer Seventeen," the song they stripped down and rolled out just for El Tripwire (that's us, knuckleheads.) It's good. Real good. Catch them tomorrow night, July 2nd, playing with Kuroma and [...]

[MP3] Acrylics: "Molly's Vertigo" Acrylics have been starting to make moves in the New York and Brooklyn areas with their softly produced, 70s pop-influenced jams. "Molly's Vertigo" is easily one of our favorite songs of 2009. By blending organic drums and guitars with gentle keys and synths, Acrylics are able to avoid the tired "new wave" tag and channel a sound, at times, more reminiscent of 70s Linda Rondstadt than 80s dance music. While only 3 songs are up on their myspace, it's easy to [...]

Molly's Vertigo

And now some words in amongst the current sea of ace videos. But probably not many as I'm in a rush. Molly and Jason have been making music together for a long time, sometimes with others but now mainly not. Molly and Jason now go under the name 'Acrylics' which people from Manchester would instantly associate with the Courteeners. Thankfully, Molly and Jason probably have never heard the Courteeners. Acrylics are a boy girl duo from Brooklyn and are the latest 'band you must hear now' [...]

Acrylics might be the next artist to hit my "breaking out" radar. The Brooklyn group, comprised of Molly Shea and Jason Klauber, is another off-product of the whole MGMT / Chairlift group finding recent success. The band recently performed their first single "Molly's Vertigo" (and a Ramones cover of "Rockaway Beach") for Athens Soundies , another music site a like La Blogotheque and Laudromatinee . Enjoy. Barnard College's radio station WBAR hosted their annual birthday party, the WBAR BBQ on Sunday (4/26). Tempted by the nice weather, free admission and BBQ, I headed up to 117th & Broadway with some pals to check it out despite only being familiar with the headlining act, Gang Gang Dance. We rolled up about 12:30 pm and despite an advertised start time of 11 am, only about a dozen people were scattered around the site on Lehman Lawn. No BBQ in site, just a sno-cone machine (no sno) and a cotton-candy machine (no cotton candy). A painful soundcheck ensued. We [...]

[ photo ] Brooklyn's Acrylics is the latest band to emerge from the Chairlift/Amazing Baby/MGMT fam that has seen so much success over the last year or so, and based on the handful of songs I've heard from the group thus far, they're roughly one iPod commercial away from blowing up like the rest of that crew. The duo -- Molly Shea and Jason Klauber -- has professed their love for Gram Parsons, Fleetwood Mac , and "really, really crystallized pop from the seventies," and [...]

Photos by Steve Cross Most of us have little faith in the concept of trickle down economics these days, but if there's anywhere it can be effectively applied (however loosely) it's the live music cir... Continue reading "Chairlift and Acrylics at Exit/In 3/28/09" >
