Folk music has seen a revival in the last few years with acts like Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes and The Avett Brothers manning the helm. With this comes the fear that folk with find it's way down the same path that alternative metal has found itself with every band showing up on the radio sounding exactly the same as the last one that had its 15 minutes of fame before fading off into oblivion. Adam and The Amethysts takes the folk music that Canadians love but add elements of psych rock, The Beatles and Neil Young [...]

Indie band Adam & The Amethysts have announced their sophomore album Flickering Flashlight will arrive March 27th through Kelp Records. Adam Waito leads the band, creating songs that he refers to as "little time-capsules, hazy photographs". Rounding out the Amethysts side are musicians from various acts that include Miracle Fortress, Sunset Rubdown, Mixylodian, Code Pie, Fuji Hakayito and North, My Love while Rebecca Lessard plays cello and sings back-up vocals and Scott Gailey plays bass. When bands come at you with a press release with loads of references and name-dropping, sometimes you get a bit skeptical. Can they really fit that all into one album? Regardless of allusions to modern acts, what I do know is that I fucking love this track from Adam & the Amethysts . It features non-traditional percussive stylings, rising harmonies and a pleasant overall vocal. Such things generally make me happy on most days. You can find this little number on the band's new record, Flickering Flashlight , on March [...]

Not only did Adam & The Amethysts make one of my favorite albums of the year but they use the Auld Lang Syne melody so perfectly that this has become my official New Years song, plus it's a free download on bandcamp. It's a wonderful way to ring in 2012. "Try not to get worried, try not to turn on to problems that upset you" is good advice to follow. Stay tuned for a new years mix and my favorite albums list in the next few days. Best wishes to you all. [...]

Another show that happened on August 18, 2011 was at the Raw Sugar Cafe . Playing at the show was: Adam & The Amethysts Owl Loris I was very excited to see this set because Adam is going to drop the new album "Flickering Flashlight" in the fall. I already heard the album anyways [...]

Rob Fournier Five years is no small amount of time with regards to most things of a human scale, but for an artist following up a promising debut album, as Halifax native Rebekah Higgs was for her 2006 self-titled effort, it's an extraordinary wait. But Higgs wasn't idle in that time releasing a mini-album of heavily synthesized dance music as Ruby Jean & The Thoughtful Bees in 2009, and now with that itch scratched - at least for now - she's finally back with her second pop album, Odd Fellowship . [...]

(photo: Frank Yang) I've seen the name Adam & The Amethysts floating around out there, in and out of my inbox in various manners and forms: as contributors to Herohill's excellent Gordon Lightfoot contribution , as remixers of Young Galaxy's "We Have Everything" , and performers in their own right. But it wasn't until I heard their new single, "Prophecy", from their forthcoming second LP Flickering Flashlight that I really sat up and took notice of this Montreal-based band. And I use the term [...]

Well here we are, half way through another cold week in the mountains. I'm really hoping the sun breaks through soon as this weekend I will taking off to Dunster, BC for the Robson Valley Music Festival . As a first time attendee, I have been forewarned of the unavoidable hippy interactions coming my way in a few days. Overall, I am not too familiar with many of the bands playing at the RVMF but there seems to be a good contingent of Vancouver-based Folk acts...which should be nice. Instead of getting ready for the [...]

I was hoping this track was going to rock when I pressed the play button. Luckily I was right . You want cute? You got it. Adam and the Amethysts are a Montreal, Indie Rock , band formed in 2004 fronted by Adam Waito... a former member of Miracle Fortress . Did I mention they were cute? Yea, deal with it. Download their track, Prophecy , from their album Flickering Flashlight for free. Adam & The Amethysts - Prophecy Drafted [...]
It's always strange to think about how a band like Adam & The Amethysts has remained on the periphery of the Canadian music scene for so long. The band began its life in Montreal, way back in 2004, as a creative outlet for Telefauna and Miracle Fortress member Adam Waito, and drew enough of a fanbase to warrant the release of a full-length record, Amethyst Amulet , back in 2008, but the tracks of that album never seemed to provide the band with enough momentum to break out beyond their hometown. Since then, [...]

Getting my first listens to new music from Montreal-based band Adam & The Amethysts . The band are set to release their second album Flickering Flashlight as a limited edition, Canadian-made 180g LP, as well as CD and digital on Ottawa's Kelp Records on October 4, 2011 . The effort was recorded over two years at home by multi-instrumentalist Adam Waito , take a listen now to "Prophecy". ADAM & THE AMETHYSTS - Prophecy by kelprecords

Finally it's time to mention the news about Adam & The Amethysts . When I attended NXNE 2011 in June. I happened to bump into Jon Bartlett of Kelp Records at the Polaris Music Prize Longlist ceremonies. He gave me a demo CD of Adam & The Amethysts's new upcoming album "Flickering Flashlight". I literally dropped my jaw because the album is going to be released on Kelp Records. I would say Adam & The Amethysts is the first non-Ottawa act to be on the label. I heard the whole album [...]
Tweet From "Shapeshifting", one of the best albums of the year, comes the latest video from Young Galaxy for "Blown Minded". If you haven't heard the album yet, then get on that. Connect with Young Galaxy – Facebook | Twitter | MySpace | Website | Last.fm ( via GvsB )

One of the best indie dream pop bands in the world is Young Galaxy from Canada. And recently they were so gentle that they gave the EP "We Have Everything" for free over at their label Paper Bag Record's site . The EP only consists of remixes of "We Have Everything", from one of this year's best albums "Shapeshifting". Remixes come from Grimes, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Blue Hawaii, Adam & The Amethysts and Cotton Mouth. We give you two of them right here below along with the original, but if you want to grab the [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

It's not only Thursday, but it's the Thursday before the Easter long weekend, and so I could understand if you were expecting some kind of Easter-themed edition of the Video Hits this week. That's certainly not what you are getting, but I could understand why you might have been expecting that. Instead we're taking you back to the roots of these Video Hits posts with 3 random selections that represent a sampling of the video-ified Canadian music goodness we get sent here at the hill. I'm happy to report that The Golden [...]
