T he art of the cover song is one all musicians have practiced at some point in their lives, some just stick with us more than others. 2012 was filled with fantastic covers, but after a very *ahem* scientific study, the ones below were last year's stand outs. In our minds and hearts anyway... 1. Heart of Mine (Bob Dylan) Blake Mills, Danielle Haim and Taylor Goldsmith | Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Click here to view the embedded [...]
Hey all, it's finally time to top the list. I had originally intended for this to land yesterday, but due to your awesomeness we ran out of bandwidth...so here we are, atop the mountain of music, these are what I thought was best of the year. 10. Spirit Family Reunion - No Separation Spirit Family Reunion - I Am Following The Sound S pirit Family Reunion released their first full LP this year, and as if they didn't already hold [...]

Another year of music has come and gone, dense with wonder and goodness. I can't possibly articulate the qualitatively- best albums of the year, but I can mentally categorize into my favorites (something that has been a hot discussion topic this week with my musical friends). These are my favorite albums that were released in 2012 - tallied in a scientific manner of how long it took me to take the record off repeat. When I love something, I tend to love music furiously and unrelentingly, listening to it on repeat for weeks and months until I get sick [...]

1. Father John Misty - Fear Fun C roce, Skynard, Nilsson, Fogerty and Morrison had a baby and named it Father John Misty. Right out of the gate this album rocketed to the top of my most listened to list. Hooked in by "Well You Can Do It Without Me"'s Nilsson-like flavor and then drawn into the much deeper and more complicated workings of stunners such as "Funtimes in Babylon", "Only Son of the Ladies Man", and... fuck it, the whole album is fantastic. [...]

Aidan Knight // Smal Reveal Minimalism is highlighted in this overly mature sophomore album from Aidan Knight - the baroque touches on a classically dream album paint a smoldering audio scape full of [...]
Adam Arcuragi will be performing tonight at Kennett Flash. The death gospel singer will be returning to Philadelphia on his tour supporting the January release of his third full-length album, Like A Fire That Consumes All Before It..., which you can stream here. Tickets and information for the all-ages show are available here; doors open ... Continue reading

I discovered Adam Arcuragi in a small backyard tent in Silver Spring, MD years ago, and while his sound was initially a bit of an acquired taste, it was one worthy of one’s attention. Fast forward six years later and that modest skepticism, has turned a manifested love. In that time, Arcuragi has grown from a kind Southerner in a small tent to an all-out live attraction, bearing a wealthy discography to boot. His untainted epiphany has been a joy to watch from the beginning, but it's not too late to get in on the action. [...]
What began as the bored and contemplative musings of a music blogger on a road trip eventually became a large project commemorating the 30th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s seminal raw acoustic folk album. Long Distance Salvation: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska features the original E Street band demos – Springsteen recorded to a 4 track with just his guitar and harmonica – plus 4 bonus tracks as interpreted by many of today’s great Americana, folk, and roots acts: The Wooden Sky, Juniper Tar, Joe Purdy & Garrison Starr, Spirit Family Reunion, Joe Pug, Jonah Tolchin, [...]
Alex Steyermark and Lavinia Wright can’t quite pinpoint where they first heard the name Alan Lomax. There was Wright’s father, who would tell her stories about The Cherry Tree, the West Philadelphia club where he worked; many of the blues musicians and folk singers who performed there were first recorded by Lomax. There was also ... Continue reading
With next month comes the release of Long Distance Salvation: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, an impressive collection of new folk and Americana artists putting their spin on the landmark 1981 album. The album is due out in digital and vinyl format on Sept. 20, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting hunger charity Project ... Continue reading
Adam Arcuragi might not live in Philadelphia anymore, but he made some incredible music while he was here - notably 20062s Untitled and 20082s Soldiers for Feet. Now somewhat nomadic (but technically living in LA), he still records regularly with many of his Philly friends, and regardless of his geographical affiliations, Arcuragi has one of ... We had the pleasure to strike up a dialogue with Adam Arcuragi about everything from perspectives on vocal effects to an inquisitive survey into his self described 'death gospel' music. His new album Like a Fire that Consumes All Before It is out now on Thirty Tigers. I have heard you talk before about making death gospel as a kind of genre. How has that been going? People are calling it by name and it is fun to see different interpretations of it as people start to see it as a rea...
Gospel en death zijn nu niet echt twee termen die ik in eerste instantie met elkaar zou associëren. Gospel betekent letterlijk evangelie en dat gaat toch juist om de verkondiging van licht en leven, het tegenovergestelde van dood, denk ik...
Like a Fire That Consumes All Before It isn't a bad album, it's just not the best Arcuragi has in him. Recorded in a brief but powerful 12-day spurt in Lexington, Kentucky, the third full-length release from Atlanta-born and Philly-dwelling troubadour Adam Arcuragi, Like a Fire That Consumes All Before It, has a lot going for it: Arcuragi's soulful voice and an ability to blend elements of church harmonies with primal drumming and hoarse but still mightily barbaric yawps. There's a sound that harkens back to the analog era and the best work of Van Morrison...

Adam Arcuragi has this rumbly deep, soulful voice that roils down into the bottom sediments of the lagoons and trolls up things for me. His is a kind of sturdy music that radiates equal parts gospel retribution, the pull of the sea or the drive of torrential rains, and so many voices rising together to answer the questions (or at least give it a shot, with conviction). Somewhere along the line his music got deemed "Death Gospel," a name that totally fits when you listen to the way he describes it : "Death Gospel is anything that sees [...]
Here is a little preview of the forthcoming Chapel Session we recorded with Adam Arcuragi & The Lupine Chorale Society , which at their behest also included me for a few minutes that afternoon. I guess I can say I've now recorded my debut chapel session, and on one of my very favorite songs of Adam's. "Broken Throat" is a marvelous song, and the one I often sing when riding my bike home from work, as the wind whips past. Can't wait for the whole session to be ready.

Like most bands throughout the nation, Adam Arcuragi and The Lupine Chorale Society will be making their way south this week to play a handful of shows at SXSW. AA & LCS write earnest folk which they describe as Death Gospel or "anything that sees the inevitability of death as a reason to celebrate the special wonder that is being alive and sentient. That's the hope with the songs...It is exciting that we can reflect upon it as intelligent life and do something to make that wonder manifest." This really doesn't describe the music itself which is a [...]

Photo by Sarah Law Words by Vicki When I’m craving new music, I have a few go-to sources, including NPR’s All Songs Considered podcast. I’ve learned about many of my now-favorite artists there, and now I can add Adam Arcuragi to the mix. If you listen to the podcast, you’ve probably heard Arcuragi since he was almost impossible to miss; host Bob Boilen seemed particularly passionate about his music, playing his songs on several different episodes. I know the feeling of loving a band so much I [...]
