The late, great Adam Yauch — aka MCA of the Beastie Boys — preserved his legacy with a simple provision in his will. The will, which was filed Tuesday in the Manhattan Surrogate Court, prohibits the use of his image, music, or art in advertisements. The will also placed Yauch's $6.4 million fortune in a trust for his wife, Dechen, and their 13 year-old daughter. Dechen was also given the right to sell and manage his art. Yauch passed away on May 4th at the age of 47 from salivary cancer. [...]

There are many Beastie Boys lyrics that float around in my head, ready to be recalled at any moment. One in particular goes back to 19982s Hello Nasty and the song "Putting Shame In Your Game". It's the third verse where MCA raps in his signature gravel tone, "I might stick around or I might be a fad, but I won't sell my song for no TV ad." Those sentiments were echoed in 20042s To The 5 Boroughs and the record "Triple Trouble" where he raps, "What you get is what you see, and you won't [...]
You know what's probably the most punk thing ever? Dedicating a portion of your will to prohibiting companies from using your music in commercials and advertisements. That's exactly what the late Adam "MCA" Yauch , of Beastie Boys , did. As you are likely thinking: Yes, Ad-Rock and Mike D could choose to sell the music if they wanted to at some point. But do you really think they'd do that to MCA's (and their ) legacy? No fucking way. RIP MCA. [ via ]
It's been a rough few months since Beastie Boys founding member Adam Yauch passed away at the all-too-tender age of 47. Though his absence leaves a yawning void in our hearts, his legacy as MCA leaves decades of amazing, groundbreaking music well worth celebrating. And that's precisely the point of the event the folks at ... Continue reading

This weekend marks the 11th iteration of Manchester, Tennessee's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. At the inaugural fest in 2002, it was a jam-band paradise, heavy on the noodling but light on the zeitgeist. Each year, though, it has expanded in size and scope, and this year's lineup is the biggest and arguably the most eclectic yet. Featuring everyone from Bon Iver to Skrillex to Das Racist , Bonnaroo clearly has its finger on the pulse of pop music. So ahead of Bonnaroo's 11th running, [...]
At a recent gig at the Sound Academy in Toronto, perennial PopMatters fave Talib Kweli debuted a new song in tribute to the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch, who recently passed away. Word is, his sixth album Prisoner of Conscious will be on the way this year, but no release date has been announced yet. We are eagerly awaiting it.

We're not entirely unconvinced that Chris Brown 's new video for "Till I Die" isn't a straight-up parody. Instead of trying to convince us he's a sex object by having women fawn all over him (or float above him ), Breezy — with a mouth overflowing with gold teeth and matching bling draped across his chest — steps right into the role of a douchebag, as he introduces himself by tripping a co-worker who obviously didn't need one more thing to go wrong that day. It being 4:20 p.m. and [...]

The influence of Beastie Boys ' Adam Yauch is still coming to light weeks after his untimely death. The latest comes courtesy of French electro rockers M83 's new video, "Reunion", off their impressive 2011 release Hurry Up We're Dreaming . Directed by Fleur & Manu and produced by DIVISION, the clip continues the story begun in the group's last video "Midnight City", which saw a bunch of telekinetic children of the corn levitating and crushing heavy objects Chronicle [...]
A direct video sequel for M83 's "Midnight City," the newest video from directors Fleur & Manu has to be Akira inspired in some form (with an Adam Yauch tribute Easter egg thrown in as well). Check it out below. Another future Lollapalooza alum, The Walkmen , just released their seventh studio album yesterday, along with a video for the title track "Heaven," directed by Alex Southam. Despite the fact that Andrew Bird 's latest album, Break It [...]
New video was just released today and it's a follow-up to the video for "Midnight City." Be sure to pay close attention at the 0:47 mark for a tribute to the late Adam Yauch. Read the rest on Speakerboxxx.com

So I've been spending some time recently filtering through "stuff." That is, combing through piles, boxes, and closets full of belongings in the attempt to get our house ready for sale. One thing that'll wreck our chance of a sale, even more so than walls painted in disturbing (read: not beige) colors, is the presence of the evil clutter. So [...]

There are the essential albums that need to be in everyone's collection. There are the personal favorites, the ones that aren't highly acclaimed but still get played every once in a while. And then there are the albums that you stick in the back of your collection because you want to forget that you spent money on them. "Own It or Disown It" gives the writer the opportunity to look at such discarded albums and determine if they are diamonds in the rough or if they deserve to be used as mini-frisbees. [...]
With the tributes already pouring out, we now receive word from straight from the Beastie Boys that we can expect more music from them, MCA included. In fact, the hip-hop legends had recorded music with the late great back in late 2011, despite him being diagnosed with cancer back in 2009. It appears that Yauch insisted on recording in the studio, even being able to lend some of his vocals to the mix. "Adam instigated it. It could only come from him, in terms of where he was at with his cancer [...]

"I'm totally numb," Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys said bluntly, in his only interview following the death on May 4th of his bandmate Adam Yauch. Sitting in the New York office of the Beasties' publicist, only 10 days after Yauch's passing, Horovitz fondly recalled their lifetime together in punk, hip-hop and hijinks. He also struggled to describe his feelings after his friend's death and admitted that healing was slow in coming. "My wife is like, 'I want to make sure you're getting it out.' But then I'm walking the dog and I'll start [...]
