Caleb Beyers Even though Kathryn Calder had well-established her songwriting credentials prior to joining The New Pornographers via her tenure in the now-defunct Immaculate Machine , her 2010 solo debut Are You My Mother? still came as a surprise to many - myself included - for how musically sophisticated and lyrically poignant it was, while still being tremendously tuneful. No one doubted Calder was talented - holding her own in a band of such musical heavyweights was plenty of proof of that - but [...]

SGTMT

Tweet At SGTMT we love The Jezabels . We saw them live at The Great Escape and subsequently gushed in blog form . So you can imagine the excitement at SGTMT headquarters when their new track Endless Summer landed. I kicked Tim & Tom out of bed, we put on the kettle, made a brew and then danced a wholly uncoordinated jig. Our joy is so palpable that I just can't get the words out, all I have [...]
To pinpoint a singular adjective to describe the sound of GIVERS is a near-impossible task. If anyone has a something, let me know, because I struggled for a good 15 minutes. At times, GIVERS is merely oxymoronical: an odd blend of clashing sounds that, as a whole, feel so right. Filtered, but raw. Surfer-chill, but grungy. Pop, but punk. Up Up Up, the band's first single, is extremely telling. One moment, you'll be lulled into a relaxing beach-time tune and suddenly be pulled in the opposite direction into an excitable distortion-heavy rock out. And that's what [...]
Sarah Lazarovic makes her case : Where awesome used to conjure up a Caspar David Friedrich painting of epic ocean storms, Pasricha's brand is more like a Norman Rockwell sketch of everyday life unfolding as it should. "All of us spend our lives focused on the big things: grad school and jobs and weddings. We lose sight of the fact that the vast majority of pleasure will come from the first bite of hot pizza or when you flip to the cold side of the pillow in the middle of the night," he said. Pasricha gets [...]

Oh, here's another thing i apparently forgot to post. 1 My bros in SCAMS were on the NME site recently with the video for their new song "Lost for Words" (which is out today via loads of places like Amazon , etc.), which is nice. 2 i can't embed the video unfortunately because it seems to be some sort of NME exclusive, so you'd have to click the words "the NME site" above to see it. i'm always getting [...]
CBC Radio 3 Track of the Day. Lana Gay: "I never tire of their punchy tracks."

Words like "sublime", "gorgeous", "transcendent", words like that get thrown around probably too much in this whole music blogging game. I mean there is only so many descriptive adjectives out there, only so many emotional sentiments, only so many ways to a fill a page but to use those adjectives, to describe this song; that's really just the start. James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream Purchase / Info Rating: 9.0

A matter of weeks ago, I took a short trip to London, during which I was serendipitous enough to catch an Amber Rubarth gig. Although that may be less down to serendipity, and more to the fact that I flew over specifically for it. She was also gracious enough to allow me to pester her with questions and bad jokes for half an hour or so. Now, following some internal complications and day-job-related lethargy and skull-imploding fury, I'm presenting a series of articles based on that pleasant Thursday evening. Part two: the gig. [...]

Okay, so I haven't posted in a long time, but I do have a valid excuse; school. I've been immensely busy. The majority of my time is spent writing essays and reading. The minority of my time is spent reading the Vancouver sun, and going along with the political updates. I'm an Ignatieff supporter. In other news, It hasn't rained in Vancouver for a long time sadly I actually miss it. So musically: [...]

Vancouver has this insider reputation as being this "no fun" place, which I do not buy into. I'm of the view, if you're bored than you're boring. I know first hand there are amazing things going on in this city. If there's any problem, i think people need to be better informed and the scene needs to be supported. Vancouver's newest festival is joining in to help fight the cause. Olio (pron: Oh-Lee-Oh) is scheduled August 13-16th. They have a nifty little site up with all there deets that you should familiarize yourself with. [...]

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Biltmore on Sunday. There was significantly less swapping going on compared to last time, although what was there was great and the bands were awesome. Anyone who reads this blog with any regularity knows that Japandroids are one of my favourite bands to come out of Vancouver. This was their last show before they head back East for some dates in Toronto next month, and while 5pm isn't really an ideal rock 'n' roll time, they were great as usual. After TO, they're back for one show and [...]
