John Mortara is a young and brilliant poet currently based out of Wilmington, North Carolina. The poet with a well-known penchant for bagels and Dungeons and Dragons style adventure games recently made homage to the latter obsession. Over the course of eight days in mid-April, Mortara detailed an adventure narrative, mixing Choose-Your-Own-Adventure type directives and descriptions with too-true Millenial cliches, 140 characters at a time via his Twitter account. Not only were the tweets inherently hilarious, particularly for fans of the adventure genre who are familiar with the pitfalls of dungeon exploration, necromancing, and witchy temptations, but they [...]
It’s Monday May 20th! Which means… Is Tropical new album “I’m Leaving” is now available! We’re very proud to say Is Tropical matured a lot while touring the world with their music gaining in complexity while staying fun and keeping the light pop sound that makes you want to sing along and dance! Be sure [...]

It has been quite a long time since I deeply listened to some Rock that really impressed me, let alone local. A close friend of mine had told me that old High School buddies from New West had released some material under the name " Hillfolk " so once I got home I found one of them on Facebook and there it was. All of the members in this band are talented musicians so I was not surprised to find myself replaying the 3 tracks they've put out so far. The wide range of influences that they have completely shows [...]

Adventure's particular brand of electronic pop is steeped in the work of chiptune acts and electronic pop acts alike. Weird Work is an earned title, many of the songs tilt and lilt frenetically and jubilantly. This is an album built around an impressive array of tones - tones that you may have heard before, and may even have access to on your computer, but tones that have been curated into an exceptional, albeit a little unmemorable, package. 'Laser Blast' lives up to its name by being both artificial and assaulting in a cartoony way that makes the [...]

It's incredibly rare that ATH posts much in the vein of this new song "Promise" by Pittsburgh based group Adventures . I personally have nothing agains the post-punk genre, it just seems like we get a whole lot of garbage sent our way with that sonic tag. This song is one I found myself immediately drawn to and have played on repeat at least 3-5 times while creating this post. I hear this sort of mash up between more emo Rainer Maria and maybe super old school Taking Back Sunday. Then things slow down from time to time and [...]

The top mp3s have gone through many incarnations since the beginning of Consequence of Sound in 2007. What used to be an exhaustive roundup of all the singles, remixes, covers, and undiscovered gems emailed to us any given week evolved into a compilation whittled down to our 10 favorite new songs. For 2013, we’re again changing up the format with the hope of giving our selections some added weight. We’re still posting about our 10 favorite songs, but they’ll be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who takes home #1 this week? You’ll have to click ‘Next’ to find [...]

by Fred Pessaro // BBG If I told you that a band featured 3/4 of Code Orange Kids , you might think you have an idea what they sound like. Yet Pittsburgh's Adventures use only some of the influences found in that project, adding in splashes of indie riffs on their latest EP Clear My Head With You . Due on June 18, the result is something akin to Superchunk or post-hardcore as you can tell by the first track to sneak [...]
Adventure is the Baltimore-based electronic trio best described as computer music with a sense of humor. An achievement reached by straddling the fence of the IDM ("Intellectual Dance Music") and chiptune (vintage arcade samples) movements, creating a frenetic brand of electronic music that is neither too pretentious nor too obnoxious. Weird Work is less synthesized and more nuanced than their previous works; a refreshing move since there's plenty of diversity to hear. Take "Laser Blast", with it's skittering beats playing etudes on steroids and "Flower", which is kind of an island jam with its [...]

Ed Schrader's Music Beat awesome yell-and-croon post-punk anthem "Radio Eyes" was featured on two different Sub Pop Record Store Day goodies this year, the fantastic Sub Pop 1000 compilation AND the extravagantly packaged Terminal Sales, Vol. 6: The Silver Ticket free label sampler . Sub Popper Jonathan Poneman says this re Sub Pop 1000 : Our Silver Jubilee commemorates 25 years of going out of business, and to celebrate, your friends at the Sub Pop water cooler have put together a compilation worthy of [...]
Leading of this week's new releases are two blockbuster albums from veterans of rock and roll, two bands that no doubt have been, and continued to be, an inspiration to countless popular and obscure alternative and indie rock artists. First up, is the latest album from Iggy Pop and The Stooges, and it sounds excellent. [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Adventure: Weird Work - This new release from Carpark Records marks Baltimore-based electronic artist Adventure 's third take on the LP format. Adventure (Benny Boeldt) synthesizes chip-tunes, chillwave, and IDM into a signature soundscape very much informed by vintage video-game soundtracks. This release, Weird Work , marks a shift from his previous endeavors. Shaking off the more pop influenced format of his last album, Boeldt forges new ground, taking us on more of an experimental, well, “Adventure”. Adventure has shaken off the catchy vocals associated with his second album Lesser Known [...]

You always take a bands list of influences with a pinch of salt, but when one reads as ' Fleetwood Mac, George Michael, Bruce Hornsby and Spiritualized ' it certainly does a good job of creating intrigue. Said list comes courtesy of Stay Bless, freshly signed to London's 37 Adventures label, who have just released the first track from forthcoming debut EP, Faded . The list of influences makes sense too. Always has lush and vibrant production, very much in-the-now, but at its heart lies a swagger firmly [...]

Whether you're feeling moody or in a mood to dance, you'll find what you need among this week's new releases. Topping the list of must-buys in record stores today comes from U.K. trio Daughter , who were a standout during our CMJ broadcast last year with their highly emotive and engaging performance . Our Music Director, Don Yates, calls If You Leave , their anticipated debut of "an often-moving set of dark, goth-tinged folk-pop," for its "haunting, atmospheric sound featuring melancholy reverbed guitars, stark percussion, smoky vocals and lovelorn lyrics." For something a bit more hip-shaking [...]

French producer Dandy Teru probably would have never came up on our radar if it wasn't for features from the likes of Moka Only, Rita J, Count Bass D and more. But, luckily, we dove into his new album Adventures, and we were captivated by some incredibly deep grooves. The first thing the listener will undoubtedly notice is Teru's lounge sensibility, driven by infectious bass lines that leave way for the wide range of vocalists that he chooses. For Adventure’s 2011 album, Lesser Known, mastermind Benny Boeldt dived deep into pop songcraft. Unlike Adventure’s self-titled debut, this record was full of earworm vocal hooks—a big leap from the chiptune-indebted songs of his first album. Boeldt’s third Adventure LP, Weird Work, remains in the same sonic space as Lesser Known but abandons its sing-alongs. The album veers from a Square Enix-style video game soundtrack (“Alone”) to a strange lecture leaking from a high school’s ceiling PA (“Constantly”). The frenzied "Laser Blast" and the smooth "Nervous" encourage dance floor crowding. Weird Work is the result of Adventure’s 8-bit tendencies running [...]
Following his fine video for "Happiness," Baltimore's Adventure is back with "Laser Blast," a track that to be honest I could take or leave until two minutes in, when the housey organ sneaks a pillow ... read more

Amid the tragedies of the week, we looked to the pop culture tabloids for some lighthearted escapism and hope in avoidance of the 24-hour fear factory scare machines from the news media feed cycles. We heard will.i.am knocked off Mat Zo & Arty's Anjunabeats cut "Rebound" with "Let's Go", which of course had to rope in conflict magnet Chris Brown. And while King Krule's Archie Marshall may have canceled all shows for this month of April, he took the time to d...
