The film that ended the Cold War. 9. Hi-Tek Ft. Talib Kweli & Dion-"Time" " People get caught up in a time and what that song represents to them at the time they hear it. Nothing I'm gonna do after that is going to match up to that time period, because they can't get that back. So I have to realize that when I make music, that time is never gonna be back to them- Talib Kweli In [...]

i listened to a lot of records this year, probably too many for my own damn good. i tend to obsess over records over extended periods of time. this personality defect doesn't really lend itself well to giving other, obsessive worthy records the ability to firmly plant themselves into my brain. so, here are my 13 favorite, see most obsessed over, records of 2007. 13. phosphorescent.pride wolves a picture of our torn up praise [...]
1) M.I.A. - Kala M.I.A. - Paper Planes (via hype) M.I.A. - Jimmy (video) Earlier this year when lo-fi versions of "Bird Flu" leaked, I was afraid that M.I.A. had jumped the shark. I didn't anticipate the impending sonic explosion I was to experience on 'Kala' until I heard "Boyz". Eventually, "Jimmy" (superb 80s Bollywood cover), "Paper Planes" (one of the best songs of the year), and "$20"

Aesop Rock's None Shall Pass was easily one of the best hip-hop releases of the year. The Def Jux MC suprised everyone by teaming up with John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats even. It sounds like Aesop and John may have even more in the works for us... MOKB : Hey Aesop, what are you working on or have you been working on? What can we expect in 2008? Aesop Rock : [...]
I've been doing annual album lists the last few years and this one has probably been the easiest to do - simply because finding 20 albums that I have no reservations about was quite simple. Leaving things out was a lot harder. But with any luck, you'll discover some of those albums off [...]

Reaching 35 in this column feels like an accomplishment, and maybe that's because society itself sees reaching 35 that way. After all, once you reach the age of 35 (if you were born in the U.S.A. and a non-felon) you can hold the highest office in this great nation of ours. If you've been married for 35 years, tradition holds that well-wishers festoon you with coral as an anniversary gift, and you don't have to be a clownfish or a sea anemone to know that coral is pretty special. Speaking of reefs, the winning 35 song has been closely linked [...]

Whether or not you're a fan of Aesop's latest, None Shall Pass , you have to give the guy some respect for what he's done this year. Releasing something unprecidented in the hip hop game, a forty five minute mix themed towards...runners..., releasing one of the genre's most anticipated releases the year, None Shall Pass, and delivering a full fledged tour with the likes of The Octopus Project and Rob Sonic in tow isn't something that the normal MC just shakes out of his sleeve. Add to his credits the brilliant animated video for the title track [...]
Tomorrow's trick or treat day and NYC native rapper Aesop Rock makes no exception, by delivering to us a sweet Halloween themed video, for his lyrically spitting " Coffee ." The video revolves around flesh eating, dancing zombies, with a some great shots and directing from behalf of Ace Norton, who successfully recreated the old B movie horror movies vibe. It's actually a somewhat Grindhouse spoof, particularly resembling the Planet Terror segment of the movie (and what a bad ass movie it is!); see QOTSA's latest video for 3's and 7's to see [...]

Simply put, Aesop Rock is one of the best rappers in the NYC scene today. He's hardly the industry secret anymore as his latest album None Shall Pass ...

I'll try to keep this short. God knows at this point, it probably looks like Def Jux has been paying my rent for the last 36 weeks (in actuality, it's only been 12). But the truth is, in a year where "underground" hip-hop has produced more good albums than at any point since its glory days of 97-02, no indie rap label around has produced anything close to I'll Sleep When You're Dead and None Shall Pass . The weird thing is, no one really seems to [...]

It's no secret around these parts that I'm a huge Aesop Rock fan ( see my Stylus review where I try to re-invent what it means to be pretentious,) so needless to say I was pretty amped to interview Mr. Bazooka Tooth himself. Of course, when it came time to write my interview questions, I was completely stumped. Though everyone on earth but me seems to think that his lyrics make absolutely no sense, I'm of the opinion that his songs speak for themselves. Accordingly, I felt kind of dumb, a direct result of my inverse relationship my [...]

WORD
I've never been an outrageous Aesop Rock fan. In fact, this is the first album of his I bought. And I bought it purely on the strength of El-P's almighty recent masterpiece. I figured maybe the quality would bleed through to his labelmate and friend, coming so hot on the heels of I'll Sleep When You're Dead . It certainly did. Mixing Aesop's own productions with longtime producer Blockhead, he has crafted an powerhouse of a hip-hop record here. The beats are tough, the words are complex, and like ISWYD , the hooks are catchy as hell. I'm [...]
