Download - New Year joint from Aesop Rock and P. Blockhead, titled "Hall of Game." via 900Bats
As 2012 has come to an end, we are taking a look back at some of our favorite posts of the year by our guest editors. Following a five-year hiatus, San Francisco-via-NYC hip-hop artist Aesop Rock recently returned with his first solo album since None Shall Pass. Released by the Rhymesayers label, Skelethon is the rapper’s effort to come to [...]

by Andrew Sacher Aesop Rock in Austin in August ( more by Tim Griffin ) Aesop Rock released one of the best (and by the looks of these year end lists, apparently underrated) hip hop albums of the year with Skelethon , his first solo release since 2007's None Shall Pass and easily his strongest since at least 2003's Bazooka Tooth . He supported that record with a tour which did [...]
Back in 2000, Aesop Rock and frequent collaborator Blockhead were crafting tracks for what would be one of the finest albums of the aughts. That's Labor Days , a widely heralded record that set the tone for Aes Rock's career. While we're more than 11 years removed from its release, the rapper-producer duo decided to share a leftover song, "Hall of Game", that didn't quite make the cut. Hmm, after hearing this and " Jinx "—another strong tune from cutting room floor—I'm starting to think they have more leftovers they could share with us all. [...]

The creator of my favorite album of 2012 kicked off the new year by dropping the unreleased song "Hall of Game" , which was produced by Blockhead and recorded somewhere between the Float / Labor Days era.
Here I am, left to go last once again with my favorite songs of the year. I feel as though I listened to more in 2012 than in any other year, and my musical experience was all the better for it. More music means more candidates, which admittedly makes lists like this one tougher. But [...]

"Don't call it a comeback" is usually a phrase uttered self-protectively by musicians who are very much coming back from some degree of obscurity. Dr. Dre wasn't exactly absent during the seven-year stretch between his first and second albums ("California Love," anybody?), but his 1999 sophomore release 2001 is littered with lines like "Ladies pay homage, but haters say Dre fell off/ How, nigga? My last album was The Chronic ." If he ever gets around to releasing Detox , it'll surely be stacked with similar "I never went away" rhetoric (and, undoubtedly, lyrics about headphones.) [...]

Top 10 Albums (no particular order) Kendrick Lamar: Good Kid, m.a.a.d. City "Swimming Pools (Drank)" Kendrick Lamar has the Outkast factor. I can listen to his songs, intently focusing on the lyrics while getting lost in the scenes he vividly describes, or I can zone out, not pay attention to what he’s saying and dance to the beat while singing along with the incredibly infectious hooks. GKMC feels like 3 Stacks and Big Boi [...]

As well as our Top 100 tunes of the year posts over the past five days, each of the MM contributors have put together their own lists. It is the turn of Dr Roddy... This years music has been a many varied kaleidoscope of sounds, moods and timing. I have moved house, set up home with my girlfriend and found myself a new job. Because music is my coping method all of these things have found themselves with their own soundtrack. When I looked back over my playlists of the year all of these songs feature in them [...]

2012 has been a pretty good year for albums - and an eclectic one too. From the pounding electronic-soup-hop throb of El-P through to Beta Band -esque newcomers Django Django , this year‘s seen old acts returning to form and newcomers snatching at brilliance. Looking at the 2012 ‘top albums of the year’ lists that have been published elsewhere, a handful of names keep popping up. And a few of them appear here too. For hip-hop heads Kendrick Lamar [...]

Make sure to to check out all of our Best of 2012 coverage. Brother Ali - Mourning In America And Dreaming In Color Along with three other artists on this list, I have been listening to Brother Ali for over ten years now. Back when I was 15, I slowly drew myself into the counter-culture of indie-skate hip-hop; Living Legends, Atmosphere, and Souls of Mischief ruled my 10gb 2nd generation iPod. As time passed, the world changed, [...]
