I started my new year with Benji B 's recent session at the BBC Maida Vale studios, where he collaborated with Australian composer Grant Windsor and a sixteen-piece string ensemble to throw an orchestral feel over top tunes by Flying Lotus , Bok Bok , Jeremih , Africa Hitech , TNGHT and others. You've got to stream this beast below.

Picture this: one venue, a bunch of bands and a handful of DJs riding out for about ten hours one Saturday night. There’s a focus on genre and the curators are those running exciting record labels and events around Australia. Sounds pretty decent, hey? Well that’s because it is. If you were at the Factory Theatre on Saturday night, you were lucky enough to experience OutsideIn – a boutique music festival ran by the good people of Yes Please and Astral People . With a monstrous lineup, [...]

Ever heard of Ghent? I didn't think so. Well, if you haven't, don't beat yourself up too much because not once have I heard that perfectly plain North American yammer during my time spent here, despite the town bearing Lonely Planet's number 7 spot on its 10 Places to Visit Before You Die list. But enough about the town. Its lovely. Trust me. Canals, churches, cobblestone, jolly drunks, pretty people, and prettier personalities; its all here. What else is here, though, is an incredibly unique concert series showcasing an acute selection of electronic music's foremost purveyors. That's the [...]

Yo yo! It's time to get our bang on. Today's blog post has been put together in a different way than before, and is the shape of things to come. Rather than mainly being my own choices of tunes, the blog posts are going to be the collective effort of our stable of DJs. We'll all be picking out tunes under the different themes, and sharing them with you. The core contributors are the FAUX DJs, Dom Brogan, Andy Campbell, Phily Taggart and Cillian McDonnell , and myself ( Jonny Tiernan ). Seriously stoked to have so [...]

" Africa Hitech is more than a name, it's an ideology - one that embodies its members' passions for an eclectic diaspora of electronic styles: soul, dub, acid, UK garage, techno, house and Jamaican dance hall... " Yeah, what last.fm said. Africa Hitech is made up of Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek, the two men responsible for some of the deepest chunes I've heard in awhile. Africa Hitech - Out in the Streets

For those of you who are new to the site, this is a list of my favourite dance music from the last year. It's not exclusively remixes, and yes, you can argue you could dance to the songs in the Top Tracks list too. Download / RSS Feed This is part three of our series looking back on the best records of 2011.
In this short follow-up to their album 93 Million Miles , Africa Hitech distills their aesthetic to a compelling essence that nevertheless inevitably fails to capture the chaotic charm of their long player. Mark Pritchard (of Global Communication renown) and Steven Spacek have been busy, like desperate men with something to prove and the wit to do it without making it sound like work. The two men comprise Africa Hitech, a high concept name that sounds like it could be deadly and high-minded. Fortunately their recorded output doesn't entirely reflect the obvious mix of electronica with world music [...]

Late last night at the Drake Underground in Toronto, Africa Hitech changed the world. The vibe was set by My Man Henri and the stage was seamlessly traded off to the Warp Records duo who initially kept it cool with some classic dub and African beats. The clip drops you in at the moment of transition, right as their set takes off into the realm of the unexpected. You will be pleased by the stunning vocal work of Steve Spacek while Mark Pritchard gracefully refines the amplified sound of spinning wax. Praised as "casually [...]

Photo by Mads Perch This year saw the collaboration of two luminaries in the electronic and dance music world. Mark Pritchard has a long history in a wealth of projects, from Global Communication and Troubleman to his recent Harmonic 313 guise for Warp Records. Steve Spacek formed the trio Spacek with Ed Spacek and Morgan Spacek (now Morgan Zarate on Hyperdub) before moving on to solo releases under his own name such as Spaceshift , which featured J Dilla on one song. After both relocated to Australia and found themselves living near each other, they [...]

Afrika Hitech - Do U Really Wanna Fight ( mp3 )
Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek together form the duo by the apt name of Africa Hitech . They released their latest EP, Do U Really Wanna Fight , on November 8th on Warp Records , and this collection of four tracks lives up to their moniker. You might call this dubstep or UK garage or any number of limiting genre titles, but it's also laced with tribal influences and hints of old-school dub. It's funky and glitchy all at once, a meeting of the slick sci-fi future and the indigenous past. You can play it loud for [...]
