Bonnaroo 2012 Friday, June 8th, 2012 review

Having been to many other festivals, and having camped, my partner at the fest and I clashed on our descision as to where to stay, and she won. I've camped many times, most recently as Sasquatch and loved it. However the lack of running water and porta-potty's were a drawback, not to mention the fact that you had to put up with noise if trying to sleep. Bonnaroo's camping situation seemed a lot more organized, with quaintly named camping divisions including Ferris Bueller, Apollo Creed, Bobby Brown, a whole area with Star Wars themed names etc. Each of these became [...]

#Bonnaroo 2012 Daily Line Up preview Friday, June 8th, 2012

Choices are typically seen as a good thing. Regardless, I'm usually the person that yells, "Just effing decide." "Point and choose." Progressively getting frustrated when people take more than five seconds to favour one thing over an other (especially on a short menu). Today, I'm proven to be hypocritical in how I advise people weigh their options as I've been pondering for weeks. Bonnaroo go-ers are faced with many dilemmas today. None more disappointing for me than having to make a decision between Black Star and Major Lazer . Having never seen Mos Def and [...]

Roskilde 2011 – Day 4

Four days seems like a great idea on paper but the pressure on the legs alone makes standing for the final day a triumph of will. You look on those people with the fold-up chairs sitting in the middle of a jumping crowd with a little less scorn (though it must be said, still with some scorn). Possibly the most untimely and unpleasant booking this year is the deathcore of Bring Me The Horizon . Playing on the Odeon stage, their punishing sound can be heard 500 metres from the festival entrance and with nothing else of [...]

The Stern Grove 2011 Lineup

Find any official Stern Grove web presence, and you'll see that the lineup will be announced May 2. Well, yesterday it leaked, and although it was quickly "unleaked," you can't truly unleak stuff on the Internet. This isn't Orwell's 1984 (yet), so because I know, I want all the music junkies to know. (Good thing [...]

AfroCubism – AfroCubism

AfroCubism – AfroCubism West Africa, and its tonalities, instruments, and rhythmic traditions, is responsible for a much larger share of American music than most know or would care to admit. African-Americans, who themselves were descended centuries ago from residents of countries such as Benin, Togo, and Mali, brought along with them the minor pentatonic scale (which, with the addition of the tritone, was transformed into what we now consider the blues scale), stringed instruments including the banjo, more syncopated rhythms than Europeans were used to, and a rich tradition of improvisation. These musical qualities stretched across the Americas, with Cuba showcasing the most [...]

Afrocubism

Afrocubism Travel back for a moment to 1997. It was the year of Titanic and Jurassic Park, as well as OK Computer and Either/Or. But it also saw one of the most important world music releases in a long time - Buena Vista Social Club, the collaboration between Roy Cooder and Juan Marcos de González that featured a large number of traditional Cuban artists and brought the sound of Havana to the limelight, reaching as high as #80 on the overall Billboard charts and sitting at #1 in several world music charts. Fast forward thirteen years to 2010 and [...]

Best World Music Albums of 2010

Best World Music Albums of 2010 Filed under: The Hit List , Around the World A project 14 years in the making, an artist who gathered force at home for two decades before finally getting international exposure, eccentric sounds that sat since the '70s and were ripe for rediscovery and two icons whose visionary prowess is only enhanced by experience - these were among the most-arresting 2010 world music releases. Not that there weren't a lot of noteworthy new talents arriving this year. And anyway, in a realm where [...]

Buena Vista Take 2: Malian & Cuban Musicians Combine

In 1996, World Circuit Records owner Nick Gold and his co-producer Ry Cooder traveled to Havana with the intention of teaming musicians from Mali with local Cuban artists to make a record exploring the musical links between the two cultures. But the Africans' passports were lost and the project had to be scratched. With studio time booked, Cooder and Gold decided to record the Cubans on their own and the result was Buena Vista Social Club , which has sold millions of copies worldwide and was listed in 2003 [...]

'AfroCubism' Circles Back to Complete Buena Vista's Cuba-Mali Connection

'AfroCubism' Circles Back to Complete Buena Vista's Cuba-Mali Connection Filed under: Around the World There wasn't a lot of talking in Madrid's Studio Sonoland on a day near the end of 2008 when a group of Cuban musicians and a group of West African performers gathered for the first time. It was a momentous occasion, the belated realization of a dream producer Nick Gold had pursued for 12 years, something left hanging back then when a group of African performers Gold had tried to bring to Havana but who couldn't make it due [...]
