In addition to Defend Music Night , the event taking place across ten venues on Friday, organized to raise awareness about The Cleveland Music Club Coalition's ongoing negotiations with the city to alter their 8% admissions tax, there are two big release shows also happening this weekend. On Friday night, Cleveland singer-songwriter, and legend to many in the scene, Bill Fox will be playing selections from his latest CD, One Thought Revealed at The Happy Dog . Herzog will headline. And on Saturday, Cleveland's finest indie pop collective, Bears , will be doing [...]

It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

The 7-inch single has been around since 1949. That's 62 years and counting! In my humble opinion the 7-inch single is still the essence, pinnacle and acme of pop perfection. Optimally, it's one song, one side (Some try to squeeze on more). That's no room for screwing up. You always hear that releasing a 7-inch is a money losing proposition, but that thankfully, doesn't keep pop geeks from doing it. In honor of true blue pop geek vinyl junkies out there, here is the second installment of the annual Finest Kiss top 40 7-inch singles countdown. [...]
As summer begins to melt away like a brilliant setting sun, the weather will soon turn more brisk, the leaves on the trees will die a flashy, colorful death and the air will become more crisp. The first week of September is a seminal time of the year - millions of kids are back in [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
It's spring, and time for the Sounds of Spring mixtape for this week's Sunday 25 Mix. We spent some time picking the songs for this mix that consists of mostly indie, but some classic rock, music as well. There are a fair amount of tracks that are all or mostly instrumental, including songs from Animal [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Athens, Georgia's Happy Happy Birthday To Me seems to keep quietly releasing stellar music and the latest batch of singles is no different. Here's the evidence: Cleveland's Afternoon Naps will get you ready for summer with a double A-side (there's no B-side on this record, both songs are on one side so you don't have to flip). Jangling guitars, swirling organ and pastoral melodies abound. The sounds are so smooth and sugary sweet you forget that this is coming from the rust belt. I think [...]

The HHBTM team has sent me two lovely little packages in the past few months, the second of which arrived just last week. I figured it was high time to give them coverage... in list form! HHBTM, if you're not familiar with the label, is short from Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records, and they've releases several favorites over the year; bands like Patience Please , Fishboy , The Superions , Bunnygrunt [...]

There was a time when we updated this blog about two to five times a week. Sometimes I only had time for one post a week – and Steven would supply the other one – but most times I wrote every other day. Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Nothing on weekends because people were out. No point. I haven't written anything for this blog since July. What happened was, I grew tired. What happened was, I fell into the existential hole and that hole is full of stupid questions like "What is the point [...]
WRUW has done it again. A year after bringing in the legendary post-punk band, Mission of Burma, to headline Studio-A-Rama they've snatched The Black Angels for 20102s show. This free concert will take place on Saturday, September 11th on the campus of Case Western Reserve University, in the courtyard of the Mather Memorial Building. Providing support for the Austin psychedelic rockers will be Fawn , Afternoon Naps , Sun God , Self Destruct Button , Prisoners, Nick Riff , Teenage Grandpa , Ethiopians and Sloth . [...]

You wouldn't expect a sunny version of indie/chamber pop to come out of the cold climate of the Rust Belt, but that's just what a favorite band of ours has done. We got hooked on them a couple of years ago with "Postcard." But, their sound has progressed and gotten more sunny in the two years since it's last album. Parade finds the band expanding it's sound to the areas close to that of Camera Obscura or The Clientele. Warm, gentle melodies that bounce around your head a [...]
In a bit of a twist, this compilation encompasses both December and January. The "Best Albums of 20093 featured last month was a lot of fun, as was the three-week break I took after it was published. I am always exhausted after that feature every year, but I still used the vacation time to discover [...]

2009 is a tough year to judge. I've checked out more albums this year than any year in the past. Well over 1,000. And there have been quite a few great ones as well. When this list began, it had 110 albums. I abandoned my top 33 and 1/3 for 45, and then said "screw it" and upped the number to an even 50. These are the top notch albums of the year, all worthy of praise. Despite trouble all around, 2009 wasn't all that bad. [...]
Im not going to sit here in my sitting seat and lie to you about bands, that is one thing you will count on never getting from WTD, the bands we write about always have a redeeming factor and we are not FOX News. With that said, the band Afternoon Naps have a single song that caught my ear because of the relativity of sound is has to the Unicorns . Korg and boyish murmuring intact. I cant speak for the other songs by this band and like I said I wont lie to you, and normally [...]

After a couple days in a row of melancholy Holiday Dick offerings, we need to get upbeat in a hurry. And what makes for a more upbeat wintry day than one that has just been called off by a school superintendent for excessive snowfall? (This, of course, does not take into consideration the POV of the parents involved, but we are concerned with the rock, not the cradle on this here blog.) Fortunately for us, one of the bands that has already garnered high marks from us for their recent full-length release also has the perfect [...]
Part two of our five-day feature broadens the coverage of this year's finest albums.
